NEW YORK -- Back before Mardy Fish transformed himself into the player he is today, he compiled a record of 5-8 in his first eight visits to the U. Cheap NFL Jerseys .S. Open, never making it past the second round from 2000 to 2007. Before changing his eating and workout habits, Fish didnt make it easy to put together a deep run at Grand Slam tournaments. Not only that, but he didnt necessarily believe he was capable of doing it. Nowadays? Heres how Fish talks about his chances at the hard-court U.S. Open, which is scheduled to start Monday: "Ill certainly feel like I can beat anyone especially on that surface, at that tournament." He has given himself reason to think that way, which is why he also has spent a season changing his goals, aiming higher than ever before, while enjoying the best stretch of his professional career at the old-only-by-tennis-standards age of 29. "I hope to keep playing the way Im playing," Fish said. He is seeded No. 8 at the U.S. Open, the first time hell be the top American at the countrys Grand Slam tennis tournament. "His eagerness factor is very high," former U.S. Davis Cup captain Patrick McEnroe said. "And hes seeing the results consistently. Hes saying, Hey, if I keep working hard, and I keep doing what Ive been doing, then who knows what could happen?" Fish spent a decade in the shadow of his pal Andy Roddick, which seemed to be just fine with the laid-back Fish. Roddick was the last U.S. man to win a major championship, at the 2003 U.S. Open, and used to be ranked No. 1, but recently dropped out of the top 20 for the first time in nearly 10 years. So now Fish has moved to the forefront. By serving and volleying, he earned first place in the U.S. Open Series standings based on performances on the summer hard-court circuit, thanks to winning one tournament and reaching the finals at two others. Playing on the same surface used at Flushing Meadows, Fish pushed top-ranked Novak Djokovic to three sets one week, then beat former No. 1 Rafael Nadal the next week. After upsetting Nadal in Cincinnati, Fish spoke about having "belief that I really felt like I could win; not that I wanted to win -- I really felt like I could and maybe should win." Results such as those boost rankings and draw attention. Just this week, in fact, Fish picked up a new sponsor: Bumble Bee Tuna (cue the name jokes). "Hes playing the best tennis of his career, to be honest. I have been competing with him for the last couple of years, and, you know, he moves much better on the court nowadays and hes fitter," Djokovic said. "Mentally, he just believes it more against top players." Fishs ranking dropped to 108th on March 1, 2010, after missing time because of left knee surgery in September 2009. The six-foot-two Fishs weight topped 200 pounds before the operation, and afterward, he dropped about 30 thanks in large part to a complete overhaul of his diet. Fish cut out late-night snacks and meals consisting of pizza or cheeseburgers. He committed to eating healthy food in proper portions. It all permits him to move better on the court and play well in lengthy matches. That, and improvements to his forehand and other aspects of his game, have made Fish a wholly different player. "It is possible for someone his age to continue to improve. And remember: Hes really just started to scratch the surface of his overall ability," McEnroe said. "This guy was a top-20 player even when he wasnt a physical specimen, so that tells you a lot about his tennis talent. And now hes taking it to the next level." At the French Open, Fish talked about wanting to make it to the third round for the first time -- and he did. At Wimbledon, he wanted to get to the quarter-finals for the first time -- and he did. It was his third visit to the round of eight at a major tournament, but he fell to 0-3 in those matches, losing to Nadal. Now he hopes for a longer stay in New York. "Id still love to make it past the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam," Fish said. "And the U.S. Open would be a perfect one for me to do that in." A reporter wanted to know what it would take for Fish to accomplish that latest goal. "Im not sure; Ive never been there," he said. "Id like to find out, as well." cheap nfl jerseys .com) - Fallout from the Rangers dismal 1-4-0 start has begun. cheap jerseys from china . Luiten became the first Dutch winner of his countrys national open since Maarten Lafeber in 2003 and the first Dutchman to win twice in a season on the European Tour.FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Tom Bradys last attempt at Super Bowl redemption last lasted less than 15 minutes. The Patriots quarterback was injured in the first quarter of the 2008 regular season opener, seven months after the New York Giants beat New England in the Super Bowl. Now that hes trying to shake the memory of another Super Bowl loss to the Giants, Brady is using that season as a lesson. "I think one thing that my injury taught me a few years ago was how fragile this game is, and to be able to take the field every week is really a blessing," Brady told reporters on Thursday after an one of the off-season organized team activities. Losing the Super Bowl "is part of learning as a player," Brady said. "Hopefully you get a chance to be in that position again. At this point, we try to move on and you try to look forward to what this season is going to be about. Its a different group of players, different coaches, a little different system. Youre trying to put together a team here that can go out and compete every single week." Asked if he looks at things differently at 35 than he did at 25, Brady responded, a little too seriously: "Im not 35." He turns 35 in August. The Patriots went 16-0 in the 2007 regular season and made it 18-0 in the playoffs before the Giants came back to win in the Super Bowl with two fourth-quarter touchdowns, including the one by Plaxico Burress with 35 seconds left. In the first quarter of the first game of the 08 regular season, Brady blew out his knee and was gone for the year. This February, New England again blew a fourth-quarter lead in the championship game, this time when Ahmad Bradshaw scored -- uncontested -- from 6 yards out with 57 seconds left. Brady has already moved on. "You dont look back too much on the past and say, What if? What if? Youd drive yourself crazy," Brady said. "At some point, you have to put it in the past and move on." Defensive lineman Vince Wilfork said the loss has "no effect" on this season. "You start back from where you started before, from zero. Thats where Im at now," he said. "You really cant dwell over spoiled milk. Last year was last year, thats how you have to look at it and keep rolling. You have to be a professional." Brady is hoping this season will end better, and the Patriots have stocked up his receiving corps to make it happen. The team signed free agents Donte Stallworth, Brandon Lloyd and Jabar Gaffney and re-signed Deion Branch and Wes Welker to go along with Julian Edelman and Chadd Ochocinco. wholesale nfl jerseys. "Weve brought in quite a few guys," Brady said. "Hopefully the mix of guys that we had last year along with the new guys can create some different options for us. Its a very competitive position. All of our days of practice have been very competitive. ... The more good players you have, the better team youre going to be." Welker caught more passes than anyone else in the NFL last season but couldnt come down with the one that might have clinched a win in the Super Bowl. He had been hoping for a long-term deal, but the Patriots used the franchise tag on him; he decided to sign the $9.5 million tender offer rather than hold out. His teammates are glad to have him back. "Everybody is different and you cant fault anybody for handling their business. Ill let Wes business be Wes business," said Wilfork, who had contract issues of his own back in 2009. "Hes one of the best receivers in the game and coming off the year he had, hes probably one of our best players and one of the best players around the league. Im happy that hes back rolling with us for at least another year." A four-time Pro Bowl selection, Welker led the NFL with 122 receptions and was second in the league with 1,569 yards receiving. Brady said hed like Welker to finish his career with the Patriots. "There are always contract situations and its not my contract situation so I dont really comment," Brady said. "I just try to support Wes and his role and what hes asked to do. You see what kind of commitment he makes by coming out here and practicing. Hes always worked his tail off. I love having him out there with me and hes one of my great friends. Hopefully everything works out." The Patriots worked out for the second week in a row, with one more of the practices called OTAs before minicamp in June. Thursday was Bradys first general media availability, so he discussed everything from the teams off-season moves to the suicide of teammate Junior Seau. Brady said learning of Seaus death had him thinking about the end of his own playing days. "That transition, Ive heard, is hard and well all have to deal with it at some point. Hopefully we can deal with it as best as we know how. If we need help, we can seek it out," Brady said. "Everyone had so much respect for him by the way that he approached the game, by the way that he approached life. He was a very good friend of mine. It was a very sad day. Im sure its sad still for his family and for all his friends who really loved him so much. "Hes certainly missed." ' ' '
