NEW YORK -- Henrik Lundqvist didnt allow a bad ending to the second period wreck an otherwise good day for the New York Rangers. Lundqvist was the beneficiary of a three-goal lead that was trimmed to two when the Philadelphia Flyers got their power play to work in the closing seconds of the middle period. But the Rangers kept it together in the third, withstood a late surge, and pushed the Flyers to the brink of elimination with a 4-2 victory Sunday. "The biggest part to me was to calm down and not be too upset about it," Lundqvist said of Vinny Lecavaliers goal with 32.6 seconds left that made it 3-1. "It is really frustrating to sit here when you give up a goal like that late in the period. "It was just about letting it go and being focused on the right things going into the third." Brad Richards and Dominic Moore scored in the second to make it 3-0. Lundqvist stopped 24 shots and didnt face more than 10 in any period. The only other puck that got past him was Claude Girouxs goal with 1:29 left after the Flyers pulled goalie Steve Mason. Defenceman Marc Staal gave the Rangers the lead in the first, and Brian Boyle ended the drama with an empty-net goal with 15 seconds remaining. Moore helped seal the win when he raced up ice to negate an icing call and fed Boyle. New York leads the series 3-2 and can advance to the second round with a win Tuesday in Philadelphia. If necessary, a deciding seventh game would be back at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday. The teams have alternated wins this series. "We took back the advantage, and we have to win one now," Richards said. "We put ourselves in a good position. We were in control for most of the game. They got a little sneaky there at the end." Mason wasnt nearly as sharp in his second straight start following a late-season injury. He stopped 18 shots after his 37-save effort in a 2-1 victory in Game 4 got the Flyers even. "As you go through a series, you have to keep elevating your game because the other side will," Rangers forward Martin St. Louis said. "I thought we did that, and we got rewarded." Giroux made things interesting with his first goal of the series. The Flyers went 0-2 during the season at the Garden and are 1-2 there during this series. "Were playing well," Giroux said. "Its a tough building to play in. Game 6 is going to be huge. We are not looking at it like its our last game of the season. Weve come back all season long when it matters, and were going to stay confident." New York is 13-2 in series it has led 3-2, but the Rangers have lost 11 straight games in which they had a series lead. Philadelphia is 7-10 in Game 6 when trailing 3-2. The Rangers increased their pressure in tight on Mason, a stated objective, and created multiple scoring chances in the second even though they managed only eight shots. New York thought it grabbed a 2-0 lead 2:14 in when St. Louis poked in a loose puck in the crease, but the play had been blown dead. The Rangers took their two-goal lead on Richards second of the series and 30th career playoff score. With a crowd around Mason, Richards tucked in a backhander at the left post off assists from J.T. Miller and Carl Hagelin. Unlike in previous games in which the Flyers rallied after being down 2-0, New York pushed its edge to 3-0 later in the period with a big assist from Philadelphia defenceman Hal Gill, playing his first game of the series. Gill was unable to handle a rough pass at his blue line from defence partner Braydon Coburn. Moore swooped in to poke the puck behind him and skate in alone. Moore beat Mason for his second of the series and then leapt into the arms of Boyle, sending them both to the ice. "I tried to kick (the puck) up, and I kicked it back," Gill said. "I have to make that play, and I didnt. When youre in the playoffs, you make a little mistake and it costs you." Philadelphia took advantage on its fifth power play when Lecavalier scored his first of the series and 25th in 68 career playoff games. The Rangers had six shots on Mason in the first period, but Staal made it 1-0 with his first goal in 29 games, dating to Jan. 26 against New Jersey outdoors at Yankee Stadium. NOTES: The Rangers put the 21-year-old Miller into the lineup in place of agitator Daniel Carcillo. It was Millers career post-season debut. ... The 39-year-old Gill replaced defenceman Nick Grossmann, who injured his right knee in Game 4. Gill played in only six regular-season games. ... New York was 3 for 12 on the power play in the first two games, but is 0 for 11 since, including 0 for 3 Sunday. Billy Cundiff Jersey . During their talk, Lemieux was reported to have discussed with Crosby how a captains erratic behaviour can negatively impact the team.Lemieuex told Crosby... ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Jerome Williams kept throwing strikes and inducing ground balls until the Minnesota Twins were finally out of outs. Williams earned his second major league shutout with a three-hitter, leading the Los Angeles Angels to a 4-0 victory on Tuesday night. His other shutout was on June 27, 2003 with the Giants, a seven-hitter against the Oakland Athletics at San Francisco in his sixth big league start. "I just went out there and pitched. Thats all I did -- throw strikes and get people out," Williams said. "I was attacking the zone with first-pitch strikes. If I get that first pitch over, I have everything to work off of after that. I also was throwing my cutter and sinker, keeping the ball down and making those guys hit ground balls. But I didnt realize what was going on until I had two outs in the ninth." Williams (2-1) threw 109 pitches, striking out six and retiring 18 of his last 19 batters to finish in an economical 2 hours, 10 minutes. It was the third complete game in 81 career starts for the 30-year-old right-hander from Honolulu. "We pretty much didnt have much a chance against Mr. Williams out there," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "He pretty much ate us up and made quick work of us. He was throwing a nice little cutter and two-seamer, and he never really centred the ball. We didnt square up all night long." The Angels No.5 starter faced only one batter over the minimum before walking Denard Span with two out in the ninth. Alexi Casilla grounded into a double play after Span opened the game with a single, and Span was picked off first base to end the third. Spans two hits extended his career-best hitting streak to 12 games. "Jerome missed a lot of spring training with a pulled hamstring, but the fact that we didnt need a fifth starter until April 15 really helped him a lot," manager Mike Scioscia said. "I mean, we had some guys throwing the ball well, but we really felt that based on what Jerome did at the end of last year -- and how well he looked in his rehab starts -- he was the guy we wanted to get first crack at the fifth spot. And hes taken advantage of it. "You need five starters. But the fact that Jerome is number five I dont think is indicative of how well hes pitched for us," Scioscia added. "This guy could be in a lot of rotations in the major leagues -- and with a little higher seeding. After a rough start in New York, hes really bounced back. Hes shown that he can make pitches and that his stuff plays in the big leagues." Torii Hunter homered for the fourth time in five games and Howie Kendrick also went deep against struggling Francisco Liriano, but Albert Pujols went 0 for 4 with a run-scoring groundout.dddddddddddd The three-time NL MVP and two-time home run champ, who had 445 in his previous 11 seasons with St. Louis and hit a career-best 49 in 2006, has gone a career-worst 31 games and 125 at-bats since his last one on Sept. 22, 2011. Pujols, who signed a 10-year, $240 million contract in December as a free agent, hit seven homers during spring training -- including a tape-measure shot at Dodger Stadium that was estimated at 441 feet in his final swing of the exhibition schedule. Liriano (0-4) gave up four runs and seven hits in 5 1-3 innings. The left-hander surrendered five earned runs in each of his previous five appearances, including a six-batter relief stint in his final outing of last season after missing most of the final five weeks with a strain in the back of his left shoulder. Liriano has given up 24 earned runs, 32 hits and 16 walks over 21 2-3 innings in his five starts, along with a 9.97 ERA. He would be 0-5 this year if the Twins hadnt turned a 6-0 deficit into a 10-9 victory against the Angels on April 12 at Target Field -- leaving him with a no-decision. "The result wasnt very good, but I feel like Im making better pitches than last time," Liriano said. "I feel more consistent throwing strikes and I think things are getting better. I made a few adjustments -- but I also made a few mistakes." Hunter, a teammate of Lirianos for three seasons in Minnesota, drove his 1-0 changeup to left-centre leading off the second. Two batters later, Kendrick homered into the left field bullpen on the same count. "When I was with the Twins, he was throwing 96, 97 with a slider that was biting. He had a couple of injuries, but hes still bringing it up -- sometimes to 94 or 95," Hunter said. "But sometimes I think he leaves the ball up, and thats probably it. Other than the four runs we got, he settled down and kept the ball down and tried to minimize the damage." NOTES: Liriano is 7-9 with a 5.28 ERA in 23 starts since his no-hitter against the White Sox on May 3, 2011 at Chicago. ... Liriano has yet to complete six innings this season. Last year, he was 9-0 with 2.32 ERA in 13 starts when he made it through the sixth. ... The Twins have lost eight of nine games and have a major league-worst 6-17 record. ... Hunters three RBIs in Mondays 4-3 win prevented the Angels from going the entire month of April without any of their players in double digits. ... Minnesota has been outscored by a combined 55-15 margin through the second, third and fourth innings. ' ' '
