FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. - Everyone seems to be playing Monday Morning Quarterback with Atlanta Falcons coach Mike Smith. By sending Michael Turner up the middle for no gain, Smith might have doomed the Falcons to an overtime loss to New Orleans, but the fourth-year coach wasnt surprised by the publics response. "Ill say this, OK? We have passionate football fans here in Atlanta, OK?" Smith said with a smile. "Regardless of what the outcome is, someone has an opinion, and thats great for your fan base. Thats what you want to have happen, and Ill just leave it at that." Though the move backfired, Smith repeated his postgame stance from Sunday night — that he would do it again given the circumstances and the Falcons spotty history of defending Saints quarterback Drew Brees in the late stages of a game. After watching film of the Falcons 26-23 defeat, Smith disputed reports that New Orleans guessed correctly on quarterback Matt Ryans snap count and thus had no trouble stopping Turner to set up John Kasays 26-yard, game-winning field goal four plays later. "They didnt jump the snap," Smith said. "We didnt execute on that play. I really dont want to get into any more details than that." Smith pointed out that the offence converted a fourth-and-1 with a similar power formation call late in the third quarter. Turner ran for 5 yards, and Jason Snelling caught a 21-yard touchdown pass on the next play to give the Falcons a 13-10 lead. But Atlantas inability to consistently control the line of scrimmage throughout the game led to its ninth loss in the last 11 meetings with New Orleans. A lack of pressure on Brees left the middle of the field open for the Saints to pick apart. The Falcons failed to record a sack and hit Brees just twice. They blew coverages, too. "The Saints did everything that weve seen on film and that we expected them to do," linebacker Curtis Lofton said. "They just caught some guys out of position and what not." Defensive end Kroy Biermann wasnt surprised that the Saints created extra time for Brees by chipping him and other pass rushers with tight ends and running backs. Brees, not surprisingly, completed 30 of 43 passes for 322 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. "Obviously, we didnt get enough pressure on him," Biermann said. "He could kind of sit back there a few times and was able to play pitch and catch with his receivers." Offensively, the problems were equally glaring. The Falcons failed to score a touchdown in three red-zone possessions against a New Orleans defence that ranked last in the NFL inside an opponents 20-yard line. Smith knows Atlanta (5-4) must correct its mistakes before Tennessee (5-4) visits the Georgia Dome on Sunday. "Twice in the red zone we had a miscommunication in terms of what we were trying to get done with some protections and we had a free runner" bearing down on Ryan, Smith said. "I think you guys probably saw 94 (defensive end Cameron Jordan) coming off of our right side, but it really was not an issue with what they did. It was an issue of what we did. We didnt execute very well in the red zone." Penalties didnt help, either. The Falcons were flagged a season-high 12 times — four on offence, four on defence and four on special teams. "Really, three of them were penalties that you just cant have," Smith said. "You cant flip the field position on 15-yard penalties. One of them, we were able to overcome and ended up kicking a field goal on the first drive, but the other ones, we werent as successful in terms of overcoming them." Each little setback played a part in the predicament Atlanta found itself in by the 12th play of overtime. Turner never had a chance. "I had my choices between the holes I could hit if they were there, but they just came with the all-out blitz, guys shot the gap and things like that," Turner said. "There really wasnt anywhere to go. I just tried to try harder and give that great effort to get those couple of inches that we needed." Pau Gasol Jersey . Tim Thomas made 20 saves, Brian Campbell had two assists and the Florida Panthers beat Toronto 4-1 on Tuesday night to snap a three-game losing streak. The Maple Leafs had won three straight in frigid Toronto and were 9-1-1 in their last 11 coming into the game. Tom Gilbert, Jesse Winchester, Shawn Matthias and Marcel Goc scored for the Panthers. David Clarkson had the goal for Toronto, and Jonathan Bernier stopped 44 shots. Florida made it 3-1 with 6:38 left when Matthias wrist shot from the right circle beat Bernier on the short side. Goc added an empty-net goal with 2:30 remaining. Every skater on the Panthers had at least one shot on goal. "It was probably our best game of the year," Matthias said. "It was an exciting game for us." Toronto closed to 2-1 on Clarksons goal in the third period following a turnover by Tomas Kopecky in the Maple Leafs zone. Nazem Kadri stole the puck from Kopecky and passed to Clarkson, who beat Thomas at 9:31. "When you score a goal like that and you have a couple shifts where youre moving the puck and getting the puck into their zone, weve shown were a team that can come back from that," said Clarkson, who returned to the lineup after missing eight games with an elbow injury. "We didnt come to play right away tonight." Just when it appeared the Maple Leafs might make a comeback, the Panthers scored twice on Matthias goal and then the empty-netter. "I think it was pretty solid," Panthers coach Peter Horachek said. "Even when there was down time and the game was going the other way, momentum shift, we took it back pretty quickly." The Panthers stretchhed their lead to 2-0 on Winchesters goal at 5:21 of the third.dddddddddddd Scott Gomez made a drop pass to Campbell and his shot from the right circle deflected off Winchester and over Bernier into the top of the net. Campbell was originally credited with the goal before an official scoring change after the game gave it to Winchester. The Panthers had a goal disallowed about a minute later. A shot by Erik Gudbranson was initially ruled a goal, but video review showed the puck hit the post, went across the crease and tight-roped the goal line but never crossed it. While the Panthers felt it was one of their best games of the season, it was the opposite for some Toronto players. "Theres no excuse for the way we played," Maple Leafs forward Mason Raymond said. "Weve had a few tough games this year but nowhere near this bad." The Panthers took a 1-0 lead on Gilberts power-play goal at 1:14 of the second. Gilberts shot from the point got past Bernier, who was screened on the play by Floridas Scottie Upshall. The power-play goal was only the Panthers second in their past 53 opportunities. The Maple Leafs started slow, did not register their first shot until 7:19 in and were outshot 19-4 in the first. "We didnt have anything going except one person in the lineup is outstanding for our hockey club, and that was our goaltender," Toronto coach Randy Carlyle said. "We didnt seem to have any jump or passion to play the game and its kind of mind-boggling right now." NOTES: James van Riemsdyk, fighting the flu, flew in Tuesday morning to join the team in time to play in his 300th NHL game. ... Kadri has three goals and five assists during his four-game point streak. ... Gilbert has 12 points in his last 17 games. ' ' '
