TORONTO -- Toronto defenceman T.J. Brennan thinks the Marlies are their own worst enemies. A neutral zone turnover by Marlies captain Trevor Smith led to the game-winning goal at 11:14 of the third period as Toronto fell 3-2 to the Texas Stars in Game 3 of their American Hockey Leagues Western Conference final. "I think were kind of shooting ourselves in the foot with turnovers," said Brennan. "Its a game of mistakes especially in the conference finals. Little things separate a team in a one goal game, couple mistakes we made and they capitalized." The goal came just 59 seconds after Brennan had picked up his second of the night to tie the game 2-2. Kevin Henderson and Patrik Nemeth had the other Stars goals while Cristopher Nilstorp made 20 saves. The win was the Stars second in three nights and gives the Dallas Stars affiliate a 2-1 series lead in the best-of-seven Western Conference final. Drew MacIntyre stopped 27 shots in the loss. The Marlies won their first eight games to open the playoffs. "The challenge for us is the neutral zone, we cannot turn over pucks in the neutral zone, thats where we have to be smart," said Marlies coach Steve Spott. "We have to be a team that gets pucks in deep and then hunts people down and gets it back. We simply havent done that well enough in this series." A newly formed fourth line of Kenny Ryan between Tyler Biggs and Brad Ross factored in on the games opening goal from Brennan at 9:16 of the first period. Biggs was in the Marlies lineup for the first time since Game 2 of the first round (April 26) replacing Jerred Smithson. Andrew MacWilliam (upper body) made his series debut replacing Dylan Yeo on the blue-line. Wednesday was MacWilliams first game since a collision with Chicago Wolves forward Adam Cracknell in Game 3 of the second round. "I thought that line was good, I thought of all the lines, that line gave us what I was hoping to get, which was a level of physicality," Spott said of his fourth line. "They played with some urgency and some grit so I liked that line." Brennan nearly had his second of the game, and period, on a Marlies power play late in the opening frame as he wired a Spencer Abbott feed from the top of the face-off circle, but Nilstorp was there to make the save. Nemeth tied it 1-1 at 3:16 of the second period beating a screened MacIntyre five hole for his first of the playoffs. Henderson, who played for Spott with the Ontario Hockey Leagues Kitchener Rangers, gave Texas its first lead of the game at 6:59 of the third tipping home the rebound off Brett Ritchies shot for his first playoff goal. "Theyre a veteran hockey club and theyre good," said Spott. "When you look at their 12 forwards, theyre playing with a level of desperation that our 12 forwards havent found yet. Weve got a couple guys that are playing at the level that we expected." Notes: Maple Leafs great Johnny Bower dropped the puck in a ceremonial faceoff. Hes just not very good at standing around and watching it. The Toronto Argonauts will have their rushing leader back in uniform Saturday night when they travel to Hamilton to face the arch-rival Tiger-Cats. Boyd returns after missing four games -- all losses -- with a knee injury. "Aw man, words cant explain how I really felt," Boyd said Thursday after repeatedly proving he could run well despite the presence of a brace on his right knee. "A spectator from the sidelines, you can always pinpoint all the wrong things but you know that wasnt the character of our team. "Thats not what we put out in practice, that was not the enthusiasm we played with and that was not how we play ball here. As a collective team we did not play our best ball ... but I think that will change because communication is better between coaches and players and even between players and I think youll see a better outcome." The contest is just the seventh of the season for both teams, but it has a lot of significance for the struggling Argos (1-5). After opening the 2011 campaign by winning 23-21 in Calgary, Toronto has lost five straight games and last week fired defensive co-ordinator Chip Garber and replaced him with secondary coach Orlondo Steinauer. Rookie Chad Kackert stepped in admirably for Boyd, rushing for 314 yards (fifth in the CFL) with an impressive 5.8-yard average per carry. Kackert also scored four touchdowns but had three fumbles, second only to quarterback Cleo Lemon (four) on the Argos squad. However, Boyd is the player who makes the Argos offence go. He ran for 100 yards on 17 carries and a TD against Calgary after last season finishing second in the CFL in rushing with 1,359 yards. Boyds importance is significant considering Toronto has trouble throwing the football consistently (league-low 233.2 yards per game), putting added pressure on the rushing attack. The six-foot-one, 213-pound Boyd certainly raised eyebrows throughout the CFL in 2010 as he was named a league all-star in his first season north of the border. In the off-season the Argos rewarded their hard-running tailback with a contract extension through the 2013 season. Boyd was injured the second week of the season in Winnipeg and TToronto hasnt won a game since.dddddddddddd Boyd said he wanted to return in time for last weeks 36-23 home loss to Montreal but Argos head coach and general manager Jim Barker held him out as a precaution and says the extra time seems to have paid off. "He has practised very well," Barker said. "I thought he practised well last week and I like them to practise a week before they come back. "He just brings so much in terms of protection and understanding what were doing. I thought he looked very good." The initial diagnosis of Boyds injury was hed miss two-to-three weeks. The Argos tailback admitted he was frustrated it took him longer to recover but feels the extra time was well spent. "We took a little bit more time to make sure, Boyd said. "Precautionary measures. "I wanted to play last week but now we have Hamilton up and Im looking forward to being a leader and the rushing player Ive always been." Hamilton (3-3) is in the thick of it in the East Division behind front-running Winnipeg (5-1) and Montreal (4-2). However, given the intensity of the long-standing rivalry between the Ticats and Argos, where the two teams are in the standings rarely matters when they get together. "Anytime Toronto plays Hamilton theres a great rivalry," Barker said. "I know our players are very very excited about it. "You can play at Christmas, play anytime, play anywhere, play out there in that parking lot and I think its going to be very intense. Thats the way it should be." Boyd is gearing up for a hard-hitting return. "We know theyre a physical team and are going to bring it every play," he said. "We have to match their intensity." Boyd is anxious to do what he can to help Toronto reverse its fortunes and remains confident he can inject life into the clubs offensive scheme. However, hes also quick to point out hes but one of 12 Argos on the field. "I know I am one man and that I have a lot of abilities and character that I can bring to the team," he said. "But I also know there are 11 other guys who can do the same thing. "Im looking to them to do their part and I know theyll be looking to me to do my part. Its a collective thing that Im looking forward to." ' ' '
