Once during the regular season, each home team has an opportunity to encourage their fans to bring non-perishable food items to the stadium to be dropped off at a specific location. And over the last eight years the game day donations alone have raised over 860,000 pounds of food. Thats right, at some point this year over 1 million pounds of food will have been donated at nine CFL cities (Moncton included) to their local food banks. In my lifetime, when it comes to the necessities of life – water, food, shelter – I have never been challenged. But as we, you, I, everybody gets older, a natural and new awareness is placed in the forefront of our minds. Sometimes this happens through experience, sometimes through association or conversation. But as we age, we learn. And as we age, we decide in our minds what is truly important and what is not; and when we compare the two, the truth is that the Purolator Tackle Hunger program is important, and football is not. But, and this is a key point, when you can use a vehicle like CFL football to alleviate the desperation of hunger, then all of a sudden football is important. Last year was a great year for donations because there is now an awareness of the problem, and a way to help a problem that has been developed over time. This year I ask my fellow Canadians to make football important – to use football to heelp others that, although you may never meet, need your help.dddddddddddd When I was younger I did not know. I am aware that what I thought was for those very few, in truth is for everybody from every background, everywhere. If you need to be humbled in life – and we all do now and then – go to a food bank and find a 10-year-old looking for food. I promise you it will not be hard to find.
