OAKLAND, Calif. -- Ricky Romero pitched as calmly with runners in scoring position as he did with the bases empty. Not even pitching in front of his father and siblings was enough to rattle the Toronto left-hander, who is in the middle of the finest stretch of his career. Romero pitched a three-hitter to extend his career-high winning streak to five games and the Blue Jays, getting a big night from Colby Rasmus, beat the Oakland Athletics 7-0 on Tuesday night. "He pitched like hes been on the run for the last five or six outings," Toronto manager John Farrell said. "He was down in the strike zone, he was efficient. When he gets in that rhythm he doesnt try to do anything more than what the situations calling for." Romero (12-9) struck out six and walked two while recording his second shutout this season and third of his career. He had to pitch out of a series of jams early then retired the final 13 batters he faced. He laboured at times but worked out of trouble to remain unbeaten in five starts against Oakland. "Everything feels good right now," Romero said. "Im attacking the zone, being consistent with my pitches and not panicking in situations like I had in those first few innings. I feel in control right now." Romero pitched out of a two-on, no-out jam in the second then wriggled out of trouble again after Oakland loaded the bases in the third by getting hot-hitting Brandon Allen to foul out to first. Allen, called up from the minors on Saturday, was in a 9-for-16 stretch before popping out. Romero, who shut out the St. Louis Cardinals on four hits June 6, settled down after that and allowed only one hit the rest of the way. He improved to 4-0 in five career starts against the As. "What hes done is slow the game down mentally," Farrell said. "Hes not rushed into any pitches ... and in key spots hes made some big pitches." Rasmus homered and scored three times for the Blue Jays. Edwin Encarnacion and Brett Lawrie, from Langley, B.C., had RBI singles while Jose Bautista doubled and scored in the fourth when Toronto scored three times off Oakland starter Trevor Cahill to break the game open. Cahill (9-12) allowed seven runs and nine hits over 5 1-3 innings and lost for the seventh time in his last 10 starts. Since beginning the season 6-0, the right-hander is 3-12 with a 5.30 ERA. "Weve had inconsistencies across the board at times so when a guy like him has some struggles, everybody feels it," Oakland manager Bob Melvin said. "Hes not the only one and its not like hes all the sudden lost his stuff. Hes just having a difficult time being consistent." Rasmus, acquired from St. Louis as part of an eight-player trade on July 27, doubled and scored in the second then hit a towering two-run drive off Cahill in the fourth. The home run, Rasmus third with Toronto and 14th overall, caromed off a sign hanging from the second deck in right field and gave Toronto a 4-0 lead. He also singled leading off the sixth for his first three-hit game since the trade. Before getting to Cahill, Rasmus had been mired in a 16-for-71 funk (.225) with his new club. Encarnacion, meanwhile, remained one of the hottest hitters in the American League. The Blue Jays designated hitter singled in Bautista in the fourth and scored on Rasmus home run. He has reached safely in 17 consecutive games. Adam Lind added an RBI single off Cahill in the fifth and J.P. Arencibia drove in two runs in the sixth to chase the Oakland right-hander, who is in the worst slum of his career. The As fell to 2-5 on their homestand. NOTES: Toronto has homered in 12 straight games. ... Melvin made his pitchers take fielding practice before the game. Oakland went into the night tied with Texas for most errors in the AL. ... The As placed RHP Trystan Magnuson on the 15-day disabled list with tendinitis in his pitching shoulder and called up LHP Jordan Norberto from Triple-A Sacramento. ... Toronto optioned struggling starting pitcher Brad Mills to Triple-A Las Vegas two days after the left-handers second consecutive rough outing. Since beating Baltimore on Aug. 5, he has allowed 12 earned runs in six innings. ... LHP Luis Perez, who earned the win in relief of Mills on Sunday,is scheduled take Mills spot in the rotation and start Saturday at Oakland. .. The Blue Jays plan to call up right-hander Joel Carreno from double-A New Hampshire. ... LHP Brett Cecil (4-5) goes for his first win since July 29 when he pitches for the Blue Jays on Friday. The 20-year-old Cizikas scored a career-high 64 points for the Mississauga St. Michaels Majors in the OHL this season, and added another 19 points in the OHL playoffs and three points in the Memorial Cup before the Majors fell to the Saint John Sea Dogs in the Finals.PHILADELPHIA -- Nick Foles has locked up job security into the next millennium. Tired of answering the same question every week, Eagles coach Chip Kelly said Monday that Foles will be Philadelphias "starting quarterback for the next 1,000 years." Foles has led the Eagles (7-5) to a 5-1 record and a share of first place in the NFC East with the Dallas Cowboys since replacing an injured Michael Vick in Week 5. He leads the NFL in passer rating (125.2) and has thrown 19 touchdowns and zero interceptions. Foles lost the starting competition to Vick in training camp. But hes been excellent in five of his six starts since Vick hurt his hamstring on Oct. 6. It wasnt until Vick was healthy last week that Kelly officially made Foles the starter. Now, Kelly is ready to say Foles is the quarterback of the future. "Because Ive been asked the question a thousand times, so I will say he is the starting quarterback for the next thousand years here," Kelly said. "If Im wrong next week, then Im wrong next week." Kelly was joking, of course. His focus is on the upcoming game against the Detroit Lions (7-5). Foles certainly has strengthened his case to be the teams quarterback going forward, but those decisions are for the off-season. The Eagles are right in the thick of the playoff picture, so questions about the teams long-term plans are not Kellys priority. That explains his sarcasm. "Right now, Im on a one-week deal," Kelly said. "I dont think Nicks going to come in tomorrow and say I dont want to play anymore because you guys dont want me here six weeks from now. So the questions we get asked about it long term, right now is not long term. Long term for us is this Sunday against the Detroit Lions. That is the end of the deal." Then again, teams like New Orleans, Green Bay, New England, Denver and many others know who their starting QB will be next year.ddddddddddddHasnt Foles earned the same security as Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady and Peyton Manning? "As long as he can stay healthy. Thats what Ive qualified it with all the time," Kelly said. "I dont think anybody can predict the health of anybody. That is a reality. How many quarterbacks have gone down this season in the National Football League? Its a pretty high amount. "Its a very, very difficult game. They take a lot of hits. I understand why they protect the quarterback in this league because of the hits they do take. When you have a quarterback thats durable and can last, thats when you know youve got a guy." Foles is having an exceptional season. He tied an NFL record with seven TD passes in a win at Oakland on Nov. 3 and was the NFCs player of the month for November. He broke Vicks team record for consecutive passes without an interception and extended it to 233. Hes one TD pass away from tying Mannings record set this year for most TDs without a pick to start a season. "I learned through making mistakes and throwing interceptions in high school, in college, and in practice," Foles said of his ball protection. "I try to push it in practice and test my boundaries and see what throws are capable against certain defences. Its through a lot of mistakes that Ive learned that." Despite starting only half the games, Foles has as many TD passes as Brady. Theres no telling what numbers Foles would have had he started the season as the No. 1 QB. "Wed be undefeated, and I think everybody would cancel the season and wed win the Super Bowl," Kelly joked. "I dont look at things that way. I dont mean to be facetious, but if youre going to say hindsight, then, yeah, wed score a thousand points a game and no one would score on us, and theyd be afraid to play us." cheap nfl jerseys ' ' '
