WASHINGTON -- The Washington Capitals rope-a-doped themselves out of a much-needed win. They hunkered down in their own end, allowing the desperate Winnipeg Jets to overcome a three-goal deficit. Washington didnt take a shot on goal in the first 16 1/2 minutes of the third period, even though by then the lead was only one. It wasnt until Spencer Machacek scored his first NHL goal to tie it with 3:45 remaining in regulation Friday night that the Capitals bothered to mount an attack, and by then the Jets had all the momentum and were on their way to a 4-3 victory. "Its stupid play by us," said Washingtons Alex Ovechkin, who scored twice during the portion of the game when the Capitals were actually playing offence. "And we just totally stop playing after when they score first goal. And we played so different style of hockey in the third period, so they just put puck deep and get pressure and they score another one." The result: The Capitals have been caught by the surging Buffalo Sabres, who beat the New York Rangers 4-1. Washington and Buffalo each have 82 points with seven games remaining, with the Capitals technically in front because they own the tiebreaker. And the Jets are still in it. This was essentially a must-win after giving up 12 goals combined over two losses. They are four back of Buffalo and Washington, who play each other next week. "I saw us go into desperation mode," said Tim Stapleton, who scored 2:37 into the extra period. "I dont think Ive really seen that all year between us. We were just pressing and pressing and we stuck to the game plan, just throwing shots on net." Ben Maxwell and Bryan Little started the comeback in the second period, scoring about a minute apart after the Capitals had taken a 3-0 lead. Its was Maxwell second career NHL goal, and he also had the assist on Machaceks first one, making it a grand day for the fourth-liners. "We knew the extent of coming in right now, how its a big playoff push," Machacek said. "We were excited just to help out any way we can. It doesnt matter if we score the goals. We just want to get the team wins, and tonights a start." Ovechkin, meanwhile, has rediscovered his old scoring touch. He had a pair early in the second period and has eight goals in six games, giving him 35 goals for the season. The fans responded with chants of "O-vi! O-vi!" By the end of the game, they were booing. Winnipeg coach Claude Noel called timeout after the Capitals third goal and steadied his players. Soon, Maxwell was unmarked in front of the crease to put in a simple backhand, and Little followed by converting the rebound after Tobias Enstrom hit the post. The Capitals had been 22-0-0 when leading after two, but this time they took protecting the lead to the extreme. The final shot tally for the third period was 17-2. "We took the foot off the gas," Washington defenceman Karl Alzner said, "and they pushed it down. They just had a lot more chances than we did, and we werent getting the puck out. You usually see that happen in the last 10 minutes of the game, but it happened in the last 40 minutes, pretty much, which is very unacceptable. ... We just fell apart pretty much. It was an embarrassing, embarrassing loss." Notes: Jason Chimera also scored for the Capitals, and Michal Neuvirth made 38 saves. ... Ondrej Pavelec made 20 saves for Winnipeg. ... The Capitals recalled F Cody Eakin from Hershey of the AHL. ... Washingtons Brooks Laich and Winnipegs Jim Slater dropped the gloves for a fight in the second period, immediately after Winnipegs first goal. cheap jerseys from china . The 29-year-old made 23 stops, including a spectacular save on a breakaway late in the second period, to lead Toronto to a 2-1 victory over the Lake Erie Monsters in American Hockey League action on Wednesday. ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- Buffalo Bills receiver Stevie Johnson has been fined US$10,000 by the NFL for mimicking shooting himself in the thigh during a touchdown celebration last weekend that mocked New York Jets receiver Plaxico Burress. A person familiar with the leagues disciplinary action informed The Associated Press of the fine on Wednesday. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the league has not made an announcement. Johnson declined to confirm whether he had been punished except to say he had an overnight courier envelope from the NFL waiting for him at his locker when he arrived for practice. Johnson left the envelope unopened because he expected to find inside formal notification of his fine. On his Twitter account, Johnson made light of the envelope by referring to it as "the Random FedEx Package in My Locker" and posting a picture of it. Otherwise, Johnson said he was done discussing the celebration -- and the widespread criticism he received as a result of it -- and is instead focusing on looking forward to helping the Bills (5-6) end a four-game slump on Sunday when they host the Tennessee Titans (6-5). "If I do, I get fined. But weve got to move on," he said. "Its the Tennessee Titans. Im not really worried about a fine right now. Its part of the game. People get fined. But weve still got a football game on Sunday." The Bills leading receiver got into hot water immediately after putting Buffalo up 14-7 by catching a 5-yard touchdown pass with a little over two minutes left in the second quarter of a 28-24 loss at the Jets on Sunday. Using his hands as pistols, Johnson pretended to shoot himself in the thhigh, a move that was directed at Burress, who wound up serving 20 months in prison for shooting himself in a New York City nightclub in 2008.dddddddddddd Johnson didnt stop there. He then imitated a jet in flight before crashing to the turf. That proved particularly costly, because he was flagged 15 yards for going to the ground. The Bills blew a squib kick on the next kickoff, leading to the Jets capitalizing on a short field to tie the score a little over a minute later. Johnson said he was unaware he would be penalized, and added he regrets making fun of Burress and has apologized to the Jets player. He also said he plans to stop performing touchdown celebrations. "He can pay for it," Burress said with a straight face, when informed of Johnsons fine. "He can afford it." This isnt the first time Johnson has been fined for his over-exuberance. Last year, he shelled out a combined $15,000 after twice being fined by the NFL. He was fined $10,000 for falling back to the ground after pretending to shoot off a rifle -- mimicking what the Patriots Minutemen do following a New England score -- in a 38-30 loss at New England on Sept. 26. Eight weeks later, he was fined $5,000 for showing off the message -- "Why So Serious?" -- Johnson had written in black marker on his T-shirt after scoring the first of three touchdown catches in a 49-31 win at Cincinnati. Though he finished with eight catches for 75 yards, Johnson didnt help his cause against the Jets on Sunday. He had two passes go off his hands -- including one in which he was wide-open over the middle at the Jets 20-yard line -- on the Bills last drive in the final minute. cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ' ' '
