Some notes, including a goalless start for Phil Kessel, New Jerseys productive wingers, a good start for Bertuzzi and more. KESSEL GOALLESSIts easy to point the finger at Maple Leafs RW Phil Kessel when he hasnt scored a goal in five games, but it doesnt make a lot of sense. With 24 shots on goal in five games, Kessel is averaging 4.8 shots on goal per game, tied for fifth in the league. Last years league leader in shots on goal per game, Evgeni Malkin, had 4.5, so Kessel is getting chances and they will start to go in. Theres no guarantee involved, but when a goal-scorer is playing more than 20 minutes per night and getting more than four shots on a consistent basis, its highly likely that the pucks will start going in the net. SLOW START FOR SEGUINTyler Seguin, who was rather infamously selected with one of the draft picks that Boston received in exchange for Kessel, has struggled in the early going of his third NHL season. Considered a potential breakout star, the 21-year-old scored 25 goals and 40 points in 29 Swiss League games with Biel during the lockout, but had just one assist in the first four games and finally notched his first goal of the season on Monday night. Its a very small sample, so nothing get worked up about, but Seguins ice time (16:34) and shot on goal per game (2.75) are both down a bit from last season. KILLER CLARKSONDevils RW David Clarkson isnt sneaking up on anyone after scoring 30 goals last season, but early indications are that he could keep producing along those lines. Through New Jerseys first four games, Clarkson is playing a career-high 17:42 and averaging 4.25 shots on goal per game, leading to three goals and three assists. Hes a beast in leagues that count penalty minutes, currently one of five players with at least five points and 10 penalty minutes (Marian Hossa, Evgeni Malkin, David Perron and Mike Ribeiro are the others). GETTING THEIR MONEYS WORTHThe New Jersey Devils signed LW Ilya Kovalchuk to a monster contract and seem determined to make the most of it. He played a career-high 24:26 per game last season and sits at 26:24 per game early in this season, going over 30 minutes in Fridays win over Washington. He has five points and is plus-5 in four games, and the Devils dont have a lot of scoring depth up front, so Kovalchuks heavy usage seems likely to continue. BIG BERT BACK IN THE DRed Wings winger Todd Bertuzzi has returned to the lineup, re-joining C Pavel Datsyuk. Bertuzzi scored a pair of goals in his first game (vs. Minnesota) and played 19:50 Sunday (at Chicago; a total he exceeded once last season). With the Red Wings looking for more complementary scoring, there will be opportunities for Bertuzzi to produce, but he will be 38 this week and hasnt scored more than 45 points in a season since 2005-2006, so his value may only exist in short burts. CAPITALS GOALTENDINGThere arent a lot of teams without clearly defined goaltending situations, but Washington might be one of them. While Braden Holtby was assumed to be the No. 1 coming into the season, after a strong playoff performance last year, but after a couple tough starts this year (5.04 GAA, .863 SV%), Michal Neuvirth is creeping back into the picture. DONT FORGET ABOUT MEIts easy to be skeptical about the production of Canucks winger Alex Burrows, particularly if hes not going to be skating with the Sedins. While his ice time is down (16:33 ATOI), hes creating chances, with 4.2 shots on goal per game. The quality of his opportunities is likely not what it was when he was taking feeds from Henrik Sedin, but Burrows shouldnt be given up on either, particularly in leagues that reward penalty minutes because over the last four seasons, Ducks RW Corey Perry is the only player in the league with more goals and penalty minutes over that span. MDZPlaying more than 26 minutes against Toronto Saturday, contributing a couple of assists and a plus-4 rating, Rangers D Michael Del Zotto is gaining appeal as the most capable puck-mover on the Rangers blueline. In the first five games, Del Zotto has four assists and is playing an average of 24:18 per game. If he continues to spend time with the Blueshirts loaded number one line, Del Zotto should be more productive (on a per-game basis, of course) than he was last year, when he scored 41 points in 77 games. RYANS HOPEIt might take some time for the Columbus Blue Jackets to be good enough for his production to really matter in fantasy circles, but second-year Blue Jackets C Ryan Johansen has drawn raves for his play and he has the best shot differential (+1.1 per 60 mins of 5x5) of any Blue Jackets player. Basically, dont be snowed by his current minus-4 in five games because this 20-year-old is going to be a good one once hes strong enough to take advantage of his skills. PHILLY STYLEThe Flyers have defensive needs, to be sure, but theyre getting the physical presence that they anticipated from Luke Schenn. After registering 11 hits against Florida Saturday, Schenn dropped the gloves with Lightning C Vincent Lecavalier Sunday. Playing more than 19 minutes per game, Schenn ranks sixth among defencemen with 3.17 hits per game and is plus-2 on a Flyers team with a minus-5 goal differential. SOUTHERN SHOREWith injuries up front, the Panthers didnt wait long to call up Drew Shore, who turns 22 Tuesday. The second-round pick in 2009 had 30 points in 41 AHL games with San Antonio and has joined Jonathan Huberdeayu and Peter Mueller on what is effectively the Panthers second line. It might take some time, but Shore did put up five shots on goal in 16:12 of ice time against Philadelphia Saturday, so hes worth keeping on your radar. BURNING FLAMESCalgary earned their first win of the season Saturday night, against Edmonton, the first game of the year for both Roman Cervenka and Jiri Hudler. Both played more than 17 minutes in the win, primarily with Matt Stajan, and Hudler picked up an assist. The Flames need more complementary scoring and Hudler and Cervenka are both skilled enough that they may be able to contribute. WARD WINNERAs the Washington Capitals mix and match lines, putting Alexander Ovechkin with the likes of Jay Beagle and Joey Crabb, the most productive unit for the Capitals has been C Mike Ribeiro with LW Jason Chimera and RW Joel Ward. Ward has the capability to be a streaky scorer, putting up 13 points in 12 playoff games in 2011, but has never scored more than 35 points in an NHL season, so its hard to expect his production to remain that high. The longer he stays with a playmaker like Ribeiro, though, the greater likelihood that he holds value for fantasy owners needing help on the wing. Tom Soehn, Vancouvers director of soccer operations, had made the journey to evaluate defender Alain Rochat and midfielder Davide Chiumiento.LAS VEGAS -- He was the second man to beat Muhammad Ali, breaking Alis jaw and sending him to the hospital in their 1973 heavyweight fight. Ken Norton frustrated Ali three times in all, including their final bout at Yankee Stadium where he was sure he had beaten him once again. Norton, who died Wednesday at the age of 70, lost that fight for the heavyweight title. But he was forever linked to Ali for the 39 rounds they fought over three fights, with very little separating one man from the other in the ring. "Kenny was a good, good fighter. He beat a lot of guys," said Ed Schuyler Jr., who covered many of Nortons fights for The Associated Press. "He gave Ali fits because Ali let him fight coming forward instead of making him back up." Norton is the only heavyweight champion never to win the title in the ring, and boxing fans still talk about the bruising battle he waged with Larry Holmes for the title in 1978. But it was his first fight with Ali that made the former Marine a big name and the two fights that followed that were his real legacy. Few gave Norton, who possessed a muscular, sculpted body, much of a chance against Ali in their first meeting, held at the Sports Arena in San Diego, where Norton lived. But his awkward style and close-in pressing tactics confused Ali, who fought in pain after his jaw was broken. "Ali tore up his ankle while training and we were going to call the fight off but didnt," former Ali business manager Gene Kilroy said. "Ali said its not going to be that tough." It was, with Norton breaking Alis jaw in the early rounds and having his way with the former champion for much of the night. The loss was even more shocking because Ali had only lost to Joe Frazier in their 1971 showdown and was campaigning for the title he would win again the next year against George Foreman in Zaire. "Norton was unorthodox," Kilroy said. "Instead of jabbing from above like most fighters he would put his hand down and jab up at Ali." Kilroy said after the fight Norton visited Ali at the hospital where he was getting his broken jaw wired. Ali, he said, told him he was a great fighter and he never wanted to fight him again. Ken Norton Jr., a coach with the Seattle Seahawks, confirmed his fathers death to The Associated Press before handing the phone to his wife, too distraught to talk. Norton had been in poor health for the last several years after suffering a series of strokes, Kilroy said. "Hes been fighting the battle for two years," he said. "Im sure hes in heaven now with all the great fighters. Id like to hear that conversation." Norton didnt have long to celebrate his big win over Ali. They fought six months later, and Ali won a split decision. They met for a third time on Sept. 28, 1976, at Yankee Stadium and Ali narrowly won to keep his heavyweight title. Norton would come back the next year to win a heavyweight title eliminator and was declared champion by the World Boxing Council when Leon Spinks decided to fight Ali in a rematch instead of facing his mandatory challenger. But on June 9, 1978, he lost a brutal 15-round fight to Holmes in what many regard as one of boxings epic heavvyweight bouts and would never be champion again.dddddddddddd. Norton finished with a record of 42-7-1 and 33 knockouts. He would later embark on an acting career, appearing in several movies, and was a commentator at fights. Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, who visited Norton at the veterans hospital in the Las Vegas suburb of Henderson, tweeted: "Ken Norton was always nice to me even when I was just an amateur fighter. He always treated me like I was somebody. Remarkable man." Ken Norton Jr. was a linebacker for 13 years in the NFL, playing for Dallas and San Francisco, and coaches the position for the Seahawks. He and his father were estranged for a time in the 1990s before finally reconciling. Norton always gave his father credit for his career, saying he learned how to train hard by watching him go for early morning runs when he was a child. "Its been noted that my father and I are on speaking terms and everythings back together now," Norton Jr. said in 1995. "Its part of what I do. No matter what I do, I cant get away from boxing." Norton, born Aug. 9, 1943, in Jacksonville, Ill., started boxing when he was in the Marines, and began his pro career after his release from duty in 1967. He lost only once in his early fights but had fought few fighters of any note when he was selected to meet Ali. At the time, Ali was campaigning to try to win back the heavyweight crown he lost to Joe Frazier in 1973. After that bruising first bout, they faced off two more times, including the final fight at Yankee Stadium on a night when police were on strike and many in the crowd feared for their safety. The fight went 15 rounds and Ali won a decision. Kilroy said Ali and Norton never had any animosity toward each other and became good friends over the years. Still, Norton always thought he had won all three fights. Norton would come back in 1977 to win an eliminator against Jimmy Young and was declared champion by the WBC when Spinks was stripped of the title. His fight against Holmes in 1978 at Caesars Palace was his last big hurrah, with the two heavyweights going back and forth, trading huge blows inside a steamy pavilion in the hotels back lot. The fight was still up for grabs in the 15th round and both fighters reached inside themselves to deliver one of the more memorable final rounds in heavyweight history. When the decision was announced, two ringside judges favoured Holmes by one point while the third favoured Norton by a point. Norton was badly injured in a near fatal car accident in 1986. He recovered but never regained his full physical mobility. "The doctors said I would never walk or talk," Norton said at an autograph session in 2011 in Las Vegas, lifting his trademark fedora to show long surgical scars on his bald head. Kilroy said Norton was visited at the hospital by former fighters, including Tyson, Earnie Shavers and Thomas Hearns. Norton fought only five more times after losing his title to Holmes. His final fight came Nov. 5, 1981, when he was knocked out in the first round by Gerry Cooney at Madison Square Garden. Information on services and other survivors was not immediately released by the family. cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ' ' '
