NEW YORK -- Surrounded by three decades of former Duke players, Grant Hill understood how his old coach set the career wins record. "How you motivate a guy in 1984 compared to 94 or compared to 04 or compared to 2012, each group is a different era," Hill told The Associated Press as the seconds ticked down on victory No. 903 for Mike Krzyzewski. "A lot of coaches can get out of touch. They cant connect. Hes been able to do that and actually almost get better." The Blue Devils beat Michigan State 74-69 at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night with more than 30 guys in the stands who helped tally up all those wins. Hill talked to Coach K at his hotel Monday night, marvelling at how the Blue Devils have dominated the ACC for the last 13 seasons in a way they couldnt even when he starred for Duke on national championship teams in 1991 and 92. Two of Krzyzewskis Olympic players, Carmelo Anthony and Chris Paul, also attended the record-breaking victory. Krzyzewski was coming off two rough seasons when he recruited Shane Battier in the mid-90s. Battier isnt at all surprised to see his former coach pass the record of his own college mentor. "I saw firsthand the level of preparation, the level of passion he put into his program every single day," said Battier, who led the Blue Devils to Krzyzewskis third title in 2001. "I know if you gave him enough opportunity, hed give Bobby Knight a run for his money. Its just amazing to be here on this night to see the culmination of this work." Hill, Battier and many of the other players in the crowd should have been busy with NBA games this week but found themselves free because of the lockout. "Its been a dark time for us NBA guys, but this is one of the few blessings that this lockout has allowed us to partake in," Battier said. His former classmate, Elton Brand, insisted: "Even if Id had a game, I wouldve tried to be here." The coach on the opposing sideline, the Spartans Tom Izzo, was touched, too, by how many ex-players turned out. "To me personally theres nothing greater than that," he said. "It shows what the program is about," said NCAA career assists leader Bobby Hurley, an assistant coach at Wagner still stinging from a lopsided loss to Connecticut a day earlier. "It shows what the guys think of Coach." Battier predicted Krzyzewski would call this just another win -- which indeed he did. "Thats what makes Coach so great," Battier said. "Its not about the numbers for him. Its about the journey. Its about consistency. This is just another step on the road for this team this year. Thats his singular focus." At 39 years old, Hill sees the generation gap with his own younger NBA teammates. Yet Krzyzewski keeps winning with generation after generation of players, even after some started leaving early for the pros. "Hes kept the same principles along the journey," said Jay Williams, another star on that 2001 team who departed after his junior season. "A lot of people have to change with the times. Hes been able to adapt, but the core values have been the same." Battier grinned broadly, his eyes a little moist, as he watched Krzyzewski hug Knight after it was over. "Ageless," he called his former coach, the guy who still looks the same as when Battier was a freshman. He expects many more years of victories. "I think its wrong to put a limit on it," Williams said. "Hes 64, and he walks and he talks and he acts like hes 50. If thats another 10 years, I think his record is going to be untouchable." Wholesale Jerseys .Y. -- Goalie Ryan Miller was perfect. Wholesale NFL Jerseys China . Yeah, hes one cool kid. The 24-year-old with little concern for the elements allowed one hit and struck out 10 in seven scoreless innings for his first home win, Lucas Duda hit the first of the Mets three homers and New York beat San Diego 8-4 on Wednesday night. http://www.wholesalejerseysdeals.us.com/ . -- Packers tight end Jermichael Finley plans to have spinal fusion surgery and intends to play football again. Wholesale Jerseys China . -- Former AL MVP Miguel Tejada has made the Kansas City Royals opening-day roster as a utility infielder. RALEIGH, N.C. -- The stealthy 49ers are in the chase for Peyton Manning. The Dolphins and Cardinals are out. And the Broncos and Titans want to make sure the four-time NFL MVP is healthy. Got all that? After a brief lull, the pursuit of Manning sure got interesting in a hurry Friday. The years top free agent, who has been rehabbing in North Carolina after a string of neck surgeries, threw the football at Dukes athletic facilities for Hall of Fame QB turned Broncos executive John Elway along with Denver coach John Fox. The workout lasted a little under two hours, and when it was over Elway seemed convinced that Manning is still Manning. "We enjoyed visiting with Peyton today in N.C.," he wrote on his Twitter account. "He threw the ball great and looked very comfortable out there." A few minutes later, Elway posted: "Watching him throw today was the next step in this important process for our team and Peyton. It was a productive visit and went well." Whether San Francisco executives and coaches feel the same way, they werent saying. But they also have shown interest in the man who led Indianapolis to a Super Bowl victory in 2007. A person familiar with the situation said that Manning worked out for 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh on Tuesday night at Duke. ESPN first reported on the session. Blue Devils coach David Cutcliffe was Mannings offensive co-ordinater at the Unversity of Tennessee and the two remain friends. As it became clear the 49ers were in the race, Miami and Arizona dropped out. Another person confirmed to the AP that Manning phoned the Miami Dolphins on Thursday to advise them hell sign elsewhere. The team has now turned its attention to free agent quarterback Matt Flynn. The people who spoke to the AP did so on condition of anonymity because Mannings workouts have remained private and all the teams involved have refused to comment on their free agency negotiations. The Cardinals decided to pay quarterback Kevin Kolb the $7 million roster bonus he was due on Saturday, effectively ending their pursuit of Manning. Arizona hosted Manning for about 6 1/2 hours at the teams facility on Sunday, but the teams chances faded as the week progressed After he missed the entire 2011 season, Mannings uncertain health led the Colts to balk at the $28 million roster bonus they would have owed their 35-year-old leader on March 8. So they released him, ending his long and incredibly successful run with Indy. Now the question is which club will land a quarterback who could make a team an instant Super Bowl contender.dddddddddddd Will it be San Francisco, which seemed to be out of the picture? The 49ers had been working to re-sign quarterback Alex Smith, the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2005 who made a comeback in 2011 under first-year coach and former NFL QB Harbaugh, and Smith has acknowledged he was happy with the three-year offer. Smith and Manning both are represented by Tom Condon and CAA Sports. "Alex is trying to figure out what he wants to do," 49ers CEO Jed York said earlier this week. "There have been good conversations back and forth." The NFC West champion 49ers on Monday signed wide receiver Randy Moss after he spent a year out of football, hoping he will be the dynamic wideout and deep threat he once was. An email to Smith, multiple phone messages to his agency and to his father were not returned. The 27-year-old Smith threw for 3,150 yards and 17 touchdowns with only five interceptions as San Francisco went 13-3 and made the NFC title game last season after an eight-year playoff drought. Neither running back Frank Gore nor tight end Vernon Davis had been told by the 49ers they were pursuing Manning. Both are big fans of Smith. Asked if Smith is still the man for San Francisco, Gore said, "I think he is." Mannings whirlwind free agency tour officially kicked off soon after he bid farewell to the Colts in an emotional press conference. The Broncos had the first crack at wooing him, rolling out the red carpet for his visit. Team officials flew him in and he spent the spent the day chatting with Elway and other Broncos brass. He was escorted around the teams building by Fox and general manager Brian Xanders as he listened to their sales pitch. After that, Manning journeyed to nearby Castle Rock, Colo., and spent the evening with good friend Brandon Stokley, who played catch with Manning the next morning and spoke highly of his former teammate in an interview on a local radio show. Mannings next stop was Arizona and then, this week, it was Tennessee. The QB has a big fan in 89-year-old Titans owner Bud Adams, and Manning, who spent his college days leading the Volunteers, talked for nearly eight hours with team executives on a plane and at the clubs headquarters. The NFL Network reported that Manning was expected to work out for the Titans, but there was no immediate confirmation from the team or word on when that would happen. cheap nfl jerseys cheap soccer jerseys ' ' '
