Peyton Manning won four Most Valuable Player trophies in Indianapolis, led the Colts to the playoffs 11 of 13 years (including 9 straight seasons), won two conference titles and led the franchise to their first Super Bowl title in over 35 years. Yet, Indianapolis Colts Owner Jim Irsay was labeled “ungrateful” for Peytons work by Denver Broncos head coach John Fox for comments he made to USA Today about his former quarterback Tuesday. Following the 2011 NFL season, which Manning missed entirely with neck injuries, Irsay and Colts made the decision to release Manning and draft Andrew Luck with the first overall pick in the 2012 draft. Irsay said he doesnt regret the move and claims Manning even told him to draft Luck. "Weve changed our model a little bit, because we wanted more than one (Super Bowl)" said Irsay, possibly alluding to the fact he did not believe Peyton would lead the team to another championship. Peyton Manning entered free agency in March 2012 and signed a five-year $96 million dollar contract with the Broncos. In the following season, Manning threw 37 touchdown passes and posted a passer rating of 105.8. Those numbers were second only to Mannings 2004 season in-which he set the NFL record for touchdowns (49) and passer rating (121.1) in a single-season. Manning also led the Broncos to a 13-3 record and a first round bye in the playoffs. In his rookie season, Luck threw for 4,374 yards with 23 touchdowns and 18 interceptions good for a passer rating of 76.5. Luck also took the Colts from a two-win team in 2011 to an 11-win squad that made the playoffs, which Manning failed to do in his initial season. Both the Broncos and Colts lost their first game in the playoffs. Manning and Luck were both named to the AFC Pro Bowl roster. Now, 19 months after his release, Peyton Manning returns to Indianapolis, the city his career will be always tied to, to play the quarterback who will always be compared to him. The Broncos enter as the clear favourite in this matchup with Peyton Manning on pace to break the NFL records for touchdowns and passer rating in a season (two titles hes lost since the 2004 season), while leading to the Broncos to an undefeated start. Perhaps the question shouldnt be who will win this matchup between Peyton and the Colts but rather who will win the proverbial war.
