It’s been trying to sell its TaylorMade golf unit for almost a year, and previously said it expected the process to be complete by the end of 2016. Rorsted said Reebok and basketball products have also lagged behind expectations.
“We are 18 months into our strategy,” Rorsted said at the press conference. “We still have a lot ahead of us to deliver.”
The new CEO is revamping Adidas’s leadership as he implements his strategy, on Tuesday naming e-commerce chief Harm Ohlmeyer to succeed Stalker as CFO. The company wants to build on sales momentum from classic lines like Stan Nike Air Max 90 Mujer Negro Smith by adding more modern takes on sportswear fashion with its NMD, Tubular and Iniki shoes, along with Nike Air Max 2017 Womens clothing lines like XBYO.
“There is no end in sight to consumer demand for sport-inspired streetwear,” Andreas Inderst, an analyst at Macquarie, wrote in a recent report.
As well as raising its long-term goals, Adidas gave a 2017 forecast ahead of analyst estimates. Net income from continuing operations will rise 18 percent to 20 percent to as much as 1.23 billion euros ($1.3 billion), it said. The consensus analyst estimate is 1.15 billion euros. Profit rose 41 percent in 2016, exceeding 1 billion euros for the first time.
With Nike having long dominated the running footwear category, Adidas is starting to close the gap with the world's No. 1 athletic brand.
According to a new report by Jefferies analyst Randal Konik, Adidas saw Asics Gel Quantum 360 Donna a "massive" increase in the number of men's running shoes listed on Foot Locker's best-seller list in Asics Gel Lyte 3 Dames Zwart October.
While only two Adidas shoes ranked among the top 60 in September, that number shot to 13 in October. Meanwhile, category-leader Nike saw its penetration dip by six, to 46 units. Under Armour slipped from having one shoe on the list to zero.
"This new data also supports our recent proprietary checks of 200 retailers which detailed a rise of Adidas in running," Konik told investors.
Adidas has been on a tear over the past few months, thanks to buzz around Kanye West's Yeezy Boost and other fashion sneakers. After a series of sales declines in North America, the label's revenue has recently recovered in the region, including Adidas ZX Flux Mujer a 31 percent lift in the first half. That compares with 24 percent growth at Under Armour and a 3 Nike Air Max Classic BW Donna percent uptick at Nike, Cowen & Co. analyst John Kernan noted.
