show how white can be done well, Charlize Theron swanned plus size designer prom dresses in with a modern-retro, more structured Dior Haute Couture, no jewellery and a new bleach-tipped buzz cut that received virtual nods of minimalist approval all around. The disappointment of the night, at least across Twitter and the fashion sphere, came from Best Supporting Actress favourite Anne Hathaway’s underwhelming blush-white Prada dress. In a season of daring and often divisive red carpet choices, many likened it to a satin apron or a lobster bib and were expecting more glamour by her close friend (who also created her wedding dress last summer), Valentino. It is a pretty dress, but looked a little juvenile, young for an actress normally so assertive in emphatically grown-up fashion choices (especially lately, with that short do). They re too heavy for the light satin and making the overall look cluttered.that expectations were high. The red carpet is where Q Scores are measured and made, thereby earning lucrative endorsement and perfume deals, never mind roles.Downton Abbey in early January attracted a series high of 7.million viewers in North America to PBS (double that of Season 2).as it will be called once everyone’s finished watching it, Two Weddings and a Funeral), arrives in stores this Tuesday, prior to the PBS broadcast finale. The set is already topping pre-order bestseller lists of online retailers because from wedding bunting to babies (and including the infamous Christmas special), there are a bunch of bonus materials that will please both Team Upstairs and Team Downstairs.Let’s famous designer prom dresses have a look at them.Warning: Here be spoilers.series creator Julian Fellowes offers the disclaimer that the era isn’t all sloe gin and stockings. The moment you write 1920 in a script everyone thinks mad flappers are coming in doing the Charleston! But when you say that the actual year of the Charleston was actually 1926, they’re shocked. They think it was jazz and we’re off.Wrong, elaborates Downton’s enormously enthusiastic historical advisor Alastair Bruce.Bruce reappears to comment on the context of the innovation, the What It All Means, whether it’s a newfangled vacuum cleaner or an electric toaster.freedom, this openness, which hinted at social change.Meanwhile, the family is forced to accept Lady Sybil’s chauffeur husband at the fancy dinner table, further disrupting the order of things.Women’s hemlines have come up, the clothes more draped and less constricting (under which the women now wear bandeau corsets and bust-flattening brassieres), even Lady Sybil’s bohemian maternity clothes.Caroline McCall, the series’ new costume designer, and Magi Vaughan, its make-up artist, discuss antique electric tongs they use to authentically recreate the decade’s iconic finger wave (or Marcel wave style, as it was known) but brought it in to the characters gradually, in the way trends are adopted in the real world.Daisy Mason or the butler Carson, longsuffering in the same two jackets for three seasons now.Lord Grantham, the aristocrats and other civilians get cricket gear, country suits and motoring suits that reflect shifts in menswear designer prom dress (which were about defining the waist, as opposed to women’s which were about dropping it).I see them as the uniform of oppression.Given the level of interest in the series, the various weddings and one in particular was an event to rival Britain’s actual Royal Wedding (possibly, more). One feature shows something of the lengths the production went to keep the secret of the first episode from the rabid English press.Putting the location shoot together was a massive undertaking, from clearing Bampton, the village in Oxfordshire that doubles as Downton, to gathering 160 extras (plus choir!organist and flowers, carriages, while cast chat about being holed up in a local hotel on the eve of the big walk down the aisle.Catch Michelle Dockery with an army parka thrown over her fancy dress, and hear costumer McCall discuss its design along with the coronet of diamonds (a historical, 45-carat piece by crown jewellers Bentley Skinner known as the Myrtle Tiara). But besides the polarizing design of her bias-cut silk wedding gown, explained in another featurette by McCall, who could ever have imagined that Lady Edith’s wedding would prove far more interesting than Lady Mary’s?One always wishes, doesn’t one, that when faced with a query about a castmate, someone would just admit, Oh, she was a complete and utter horror.Everyone’s a joy to work with, it seems.featurette about the legendary actress’s two-week, two-episode stint on Downton (as Lady Cora’s flamboyant American mother a line prom dresses Martha Levinson) is one such instance. It’s quite the hagiography, and mostly about the rest of the cast being agog at her very presence. There is also some footage overlap and repetition between this and the other extras. The featurettes about location shoots that take them away from the familiar daily routine of shooting at Highclere Castle and Ealing Studios, the offhand stories told by the cast and crew between takes are the most telling of miracles of editing. For example, the peculiar challenges of learning to dance a reel and shoot the Christmas special among the lochs and ghillies of Scotland, in deep July.Or the secret behind how the cast pulled off a credible-looking cricket match (including tea-dyed cricket whites).Or the correct use of magnesium flashes.Beyond the unexpected development of a love interest for the cook Mrs.hints the sly Fellowes, who surely chose that particular imagery intentionally, but she will eventually be forgiven by fate.As an woman who doesn’t take breakfast in bed and ends up at the morning table, poring over the day’s news with the men and takes an interest in current issues and politics. There’s also more to come from the Crawleys’ naughty cousin Lady Rose, a bright young thing reminiscent of their beloved Sybil and whose story promises to shake things up at Downton next season. For Thomas, there is the continued exploration o
