SEATTLE -- Clint Dempsey pointed at his wrist and mouthed "about time." After nine games, Dempsey finally got on the board in his return to Major League Soccer with Seattle, only to see Los Angeles striker Robbie Keane get a late equalizer that put the Sounders in the position of having to play an extra round in the MLS playoffs. Dempsey scored off a cross from Lamar Neagle in the 30th minute, but Keanes half-volley in the 78th minute gave the Galaxy a 1-1 draw with Seattle on Sunday night in the MLS regular-season finale. The result left Los Angeles in third in the Western Conference and put Seattle in fourth, meaning the Sounders will host Colorado in the play-in round on Wednesday night. The winner of the play-in game will face Western Conference regular-season champion Portland in the conference semifinals. Meanwhile, the Galaxy will take on second-place Real Sale Lake in the two-leg conference semifinals. "Weve had a good run since August," Galaxy coach Bruce Arena said. "Weve done a good job and well hopefully be healthy by the weekend when we play. Well be in a good position to be competitive and hopefully win the first series." The disappointing draw for Seattle -- in front of another massive crowd of 66,218 -- capped a miserable final month that wasted a chance to win the Western Conference and Supporters Shield. The Sounders were winless in their final five games, including a four-game losing streak that was snapped with Sundays draw. Seattle hasnt won since Sept. 13 when it defeated Salt Lake, but it will open the post-season with Colorado at home and possibly rival Portland at home. "Were due for a win. Thats the most important thing," Seattle midfielder Brad Evans said. "Were due for a win and Im really happy we have this game at home." The Galaxy could argue they should have gotten out of Seattle with a victory due to a blown call late in the first half that negated a Los Angeles goal. Omar Gonzalez came open at the back post on a corner kick from Landon Donovan and his header beat goalkeeper Michael Gspurning. Seattle midfielder Osvaldo Alonso appeared to clear the ball off the line, but television replays confirmed the missed call. Gonzalezs header clearly bounced beyond the goal line, kicking up rubber pellets, before Alonsos clearance. Donovan and Keane were immediately irate, getting in the face of referee Mark Geiger. Keane then turned his barking to assistant referee Greg Barkey, who was standing on the end line for the corner kick. But Keanes late goal gave Los Angeles the draw. It was his 16th of the season and seventh in the last 12 months against Seattle. The Galaxy closed the season with eight points in their final four games to overtake the Sounders and avoid the extra round of the post-season. "I dont see it from where I am, but I was told it was about a yard over the line. For some reason, I think we should be able to see that one," Arena said. "Were fortunate to get out of it, not using that as a major sticking point in the game." The bright spot for Seattle was Dempsey getting his first point. Neagles cross floated into the penalty area and Galaxy goalkeeper Jaime Penedo got the slightest touch trying to deflect the pass. The touch by Penedo took Gonzalez out of the play due to his momentum. Without breaking stride, Dempsey made a slight adjustment to hit the ball with the outside of his right foot and past Penedo as he tried to get back in position. Dempsey had gone 590 minutes since his first action for Seattle without a goal or assist. "I think that was important for him, takes a lot of pressure off of him so hes going to be more confident and allows us to make sure we find him," Seattle coach Sigi Schmid said. "I thought we did a good job of finding him." new balance 574 ár . The Islanders dealt Thomas Vanek to the Montreal Canadiens after less than a year on Long Island. KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Kevin Harvick didnt simply have his hands full with the rest of the Sprint Cup field Sunday. He also was trying to tame a squirrely surface at Kansas Speedway. He handled both better than anybody else. Harvick pulled away from Kurt Busch and Jeff Gordon on a late restart to win a wreck-filled race over the recently repaved track, keeping his No. 29 Chevrolet out of trouble all afternoon and making a big move in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship. "It was an interesting weekend, to say the least," said Harvick, who moved into third in points behind leaders Matt Kenseth and Jimmie Johnson. "Everybody was battling the tires and the track, and I think it was like driving on a razor blade." Harvick sat on the pole for the first time in 254 races, and that should have given him some confidence. He also won the last time he qualified first, at New Hampshire in 2006. "These guys just did a great job all weekend," Harvick said. "To have a car fast enough for me to qualify on the pole says a lot about how fast this thing is." Harvick was chased across the line by Busch and Gordon. Joey Logano finished fourth, Carl Edwards was fifth, and Johnson finished sixth despite a hiccup with his engine on the final lap that cost him a spot on the track. Kenseth held onto his lead in the Chase with an 11th-place finish. Johnson narrowed the gap to three points, while Harvick closed to within 25 points heading to Charlotte. "We just got to keep doing what we did today to be a contender," said his car owner, Richard Childress. "I dont think top 10s will win a championship when youre racing Jimmie Johnson and the group of guys that are up there." Kyle Busch was the big loser after crashing out of his third straight Sprint Cup race at Kansas. He dropped from third in points to fifth, 35 out of first place. "All-in-all just a crazy day," said Johnson, who shaved five points off of Kenseths lead. "Wacky restarts, a lot of chaos there, and caution after caution for who knows what." There were 15 cautions in the race, breaking the record of 14 set in last years race. The first came when the race wasnt even a lap old and Danica Patrick slammed into the wall, and most of them occurred wwhen cars got loose coming out of Turn 2.dddddddddddd Kenseth both called the race "treacherous," pointing to the combination of a repave last year and Goodyears new "multi-zone" tires that made it seem as if they were skating across a smooth, glasslike surface most of the afternoon. All of it was compounded by temperatures in the 50s at the start, more than 30 degrees cooler than practice earlier in the week. "Its all about restarts and making sure you can gain spots, but its treacherous," Kurt Busch said. "You had to have a lot of give and take." One of the intriguing story lines coming into the race involved Chase contender Kyle Busch and Brad Keselowski, who got together in the Nationwide race Saturday. Keselowski said that Busch intentionally dumped him and seemed to indicate he would retaliate in the Sprint Cup race. Keselowski even asked NASCAR President Mike Helton in the prerace drivers meeting about the line between hard racing and intentional wrecks. It turned out that Busch kept going for spins without Keselowskis help. The first one came down the front stretch when he appeared to squeeze Juan Pablo Montoya, sending Busch sideways across the track. The second spin came after a restart a moment later, and this one sent his No. 18 Toyota head-first into the Turn 1 wall and ended his day. "I have no idea what happened, but its Kansas. Its what we do here, we just crash," Busch said. "The racetrack is the worst racetrack Ive ever driven on. The tires are the worst tires Ive ever driven on, and track position is everything. You cant do anything." Harvick didnt seem to have a whole lot of trouble with track, or the tires. He was fast from the moment he unloaded this weekend, and then turned heads with his fast qualifying run. Harvick got off pit sequence early in the race and was shuffled to the back of the pack, but he was fast every time he got into clean air. That was the case at the end, when he pulled away for an easy victory. "The car was just really tight and then we got better as the cloud cover came over and we found that middle line," Harvick said. "Track position was so important. It was a good day, and just happy as heck for everybody on this team."
