NEW YORK -- Ivan Nova thought discovering he was tipping pitches in his start against Boston last week made the difference. Manager Joe Girardi simply attributed this outing to better control. No matter the reason, Novas stellar September start kept the New York Yankees in the AL wild-card chase. The right-hander pitched a six-hitter for his second career shutout, Eduardo Nunez hit a two-run homer and the Yankees beat the San Francisco Giants 6-0 Saturday. "We need to win games, and its no time to pitch the way that I pitched the time before," Nova said. Nova watched video between starts with pitching coach Larry Rothschild after giving up five runs -- four earned -- against the Red Sox. Nova thought he saw himself giving away some pitches, so he adjusted the way he held his glove, and he also worked on better curveball command. The adjustments made for a 108-pitch gem. A day before New York honours retiring closer Mariano Rivera in a pregame ceremony, Nova (9-5) gave the Yankees bullpen a rest with his third complete game, all this year. He struck out seven and walked one in winning for the first time in four starts following poor efforts against AL East rivals Boston and Baltimore. "I think he has a lot more confidence in his stuff," Girardi said. Brendan Ryan made several impressive plays at shortstop, Alfonso Soriano connected for the second straight day and Robinson Cano had an RBI single in a three-run third against Ryan Vogelsong (3-6), helping New York win for just the third time in eight games. New York (82-73) remained three games behind Cleveland (85-70) and 2 1-2 back of Texas (84-70) for the second AL wild card but moved ahead of Baltimore and Kansas City (both 81-73). The Yankees have seven games remaining, including three against wild-card leading Tampa Bay (85-69). "If we played like we played last night and today we feel like we can win every game," Soriano said. Soriano connected on the first pitch thrown by reliever Guillermo Moscoso leading off the sixth, giving him 17 homers and 50 RBIs with the Yankees in 52 games. He had 17 homers and 51 RBIs in 93 games for the Chicago Cubs. The Giants gave the many orange and black-clad fans in attendance little to cheer. They only had two baserunners reach second -- one the result of Soriano losing Brandon Belts flyball to left field in the sun for a double. Belt and Pablo Sandoval each had two hits for the Giants, who never put two runners on in the same inning. San Francisco lost for the eighth time in nine interleague road games this season. With a .458 winning percentage (71-84), the Giants are on track for the third-worst winning percentage for a defending World Series champion, trailing only the 1998 Florida Marlins (.333) and the 1991 Cincinnati Reds (.457), according to STATS. After Vogelsong retired six straight to start the game, the bottom three in the Yankees lineup reached opening the third. Mark Reynolds blooped a single over third base and went to third on a hit-and-run single by Ryan, who entered with a .197 average. Chris Stewart walked on four pitches to load the bases for Ichiro Suzuki. "It was upsetting for me from a mental standpoint. I didnt have a good mental game," Vogelsong said. "On the hit and run, I knew they were going to send the runner there and the cutter away but it ran up a bit. If that ball is where I want it to be its a groundball." Suzukis sacrifice fly put the Yankees ahead, Alex Rodriguez drove in another run with a spinning grounder to the left of second base that shortstop Brandon Crawford gloved with a nifty grab, and Cano tacked on a run when he sliced a single the opposite way through a huge hole between shortstop and third base. Nunez connected in the fourth on the first pitch he saw from Vogelsong for his second homer this season. Vogelsong was lifted after five innings. He allowed five runs and five hits in losing for the fourth time in five starts. Sandoval, the Giants third baseman, was lifted for defence before the start of the bottom of the eighth because his back tightened up. He is day to day. His off-season arrest aside, there is no denying what a game-changer the explosive, 6-foot-2, 235-pound running back can be for the surging sixth-ranked Tigers, who have quickly re-established their credentials as contenders in the Southeastern Conference. Hill rushed for a career-high 184 yards and tied a career high with three touchdowns, helping LSU defeat previously unbeaten Auburn, 35-21 on Saturday night. Running with a combination of power, agility and speed, Hill scored touchdowns of 49, 10 and 6 yards. He set up yet another score with a 54-yard scamper in which he was shoved out of bounds at the 1. Hill was quick to deflect some of the credit to LSUs young offensive line for opening "gaping holes." "It was just up to me to make a couple of guys miss," Hill added. Even Hills defensive teammates talked about being "pumped up" on the sideline as they watched Hill tear off big runs. "For him to be that big and run that fast, its ridiculous," LSU cornerback Jalen Mills said. Tre Mason rushed for 132 yards and had two short touchdown runs in the third quarter for Auburn (3-1, 1-1 SEC), the second cutting LSUs lead to 28-14. Zach Mettenberger responded with his only touchdown pass of the night -- a 32-yarder to Jarvis Landry -- early in the fourth quarter as LSU (4-0, 1-0) dimmed Auburns hopes for a comeback. Mettenberger was 14 of 22 for a season-low 229 yards. He also threw his first interception of the season, but it wasnt that costly as LSUs 228 yards rushing helped it stay in control for most of the game. Auburns Nick Marshall was 17-of-33 passing for 224 yards and was intercepted twice. He also rushed for 46 yards. Although LSU raced to a three-touchdown lead, Auburn refused to fold. Auburn pulled within two scores on Cameron Artis-Paynes 12-yard touchdown run with 6:33 left, then nearly pulled off a successful onside kick. Auburn recovered, but on replay review was deemed to have touched the ball before it went the requisite 10 yards. "Our kids didnt quit and theyre not going to quit," first-year Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said. "Im very proud of our guys and with that attitude theyll have a chance to improve." Auburn already appears substantially better than last season, when it won three games all year and wennt winless in the SEC.dddddddddddd LSU coach Les Miles applauded his teams fast start and its timely answers to Auburns second-half surges, but Miles also said he would have liked the game to have "a nice, orderly finish," adding, "That was not what I consider orderly." With rain steady throughout the day and well into the first half, ball security was a challenge early and hurt Auburn most. Nick Marshalls fumbled handoff on fourth-and-1 on the LSU 41 led to Hills long TD run three plays later for the games opening score. Punter Steven Clarks mishandled snap on Auburns second possession of the game set up Hills 10-yard score to give LSU a 14-0 lead before six minutes had elapsed. Already, Auburn was facing a larger deficit than at any point in its first three games. "We kind of beat ourselves in the beginning," Mason said. "Mistakes after mistakes can get frustrating and that happened. "We also have to figure out how to play in weather like this." LSU was threatening to take a three-score lead when running back Terrence Magee fumbled on the Auburn 12, but Hills slashing 54-yard run set up fullback J.C. Copelands forceful touchdown carry to make it 21-0. Auburn did not score until early in the third quarter. Masons 2-yard TD run capped a 50-yard drive that began with Auburn safety Jermaine Whiteheads interception. LSU responded immediately with a 75-yard drive that ended with Hills third TD. During much of the off-season, it wasnt clear if Hill would be able to play at all. His arrest for landing a punch outside a bar in late April violated his probation from an earlier misdemeanour plea to carnal knowledge of a juvenile. A judge placed further restrictions on Hills probation, but agreed to let him remain out of jail. Miles, whod suspended Hill after his arrest, reinstated him when fall practice began and benched him only for LSUs season-opening victory over TCU. A week later, Hill scored on his first carry against UAB. He scored twice last week against Kent State, including a 58-yarder. He was even more dominant this weekend. ---- NOTES: Auburn WR Jaylon Denson was carted off with what appeared to be a serious knee injury in the first quarter. ... LSU DT Anthony Johnson appeared to hurt his left leg, but LSU did not provide any update on his condition. ...
