LODZ, Poland (CIS) - The Canadian women barely missed the podium on Saturday at the 18th FISU world university cross-country running championships finishing fourth in the team standings, a single point behind third place, in Lodz, Poland. It marked the second best result in history for the all-CIS womens squad at the biennial event, trailing only a bronze-medal placing on home soil in 2010 in Kingston, Ont. Canadas top three finishers on Saturday amassed 46 points compared to 45 for Poland. Japan (21) edged Romania (23) for the womens title. On the mens side, the all-CIS contingent settled for ninth place with 169 points, a drop of five positions from two years ago. Japan (36) captured the team banner, with the Ukraine (57) and Algeria (61) rounding out the podium. Tamara Jewett of Toronto paced Canada in the five-kilometre womens race. The University of Toronto student took the ninth spot thanks to a time of 16 minutes and 24 seconds. Carise Thompson of Lynden, Ont., was 15th in 16:43, Catherine Cormier of New Richmond, Que., placed 22nd (16:43), Lydia Frost of Bocabec, N.B., finished 41st (17:29) and Jen Bays of Whitby, Ont., was 53rd (18:12). Romanias Ancuta Bobocel (15:48), Portugals Carla Salome Rocha (15:54) and Romanias Roxana Birca (15:56) were the individual medallists. In the mens 10km race, Cliff Childs, a University of Victoria student from Kelowna, B.C., was the fastest Canadian with a time of 30:40, good for 32nd place. Allan Brett of Ottawa followed in 40th position (30:50), while Dylan Haight of Victoria was 48th (31:02), Paul Janakowski of LaSalle, Ont., 49th (31:05), Matt Walters of North Bay, Ont., 58th (31:31) and Aaron Hendrikx of Parkhill, Ont., 60th (31:39). Abdelmajed Touil of Algeria was the first male runner to cross the finish line in 29:11. Japanese teammates Yuta Shitara (29:15) and Daichi Motomura (29:22) captured silver and bronze, respectively. Brett was the only veteran from the 2010 Canadian delegation. He had placed 24th in Kingston. "Tamaras ninth-place finish was simply outstanding. Carise had an exceptional race as well, especially for a university sophomore," said Canadian head coach Keith Butler, the associate coach of UVics cross country program. "Our women had a remarkable showing, just one point outside the podium. Its a credit to CIS coaches and their programs." "On the mens side, Cliff was in his first international competition but he ran like a veteran against a very competitive field. He was the last selection on the team so his run showed the tremendous improvement he has made over the course of the season." Cheap Atletico Madrid Jerseys . LOUIS -- T.SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah Jazz rookie Trey Burke will undergo surgery on a broken finger on his shooting hand. Burke will have the operation on Tuesday morning in Salt Lake City. Pins will be inserted to stabilize the point guards right index finger, which he fractured during a 106-74 preseason loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday night. The Jazz did not announce a timetable for Burkes return, but he is expected to miss anywhere from eight to 12 weeks. "Its unfortunate that it would happen now in training camp," coach Tyrone Corbin said after Mondays practice. "He was learning a new game and the way to play it and he was making great strides. And now he wont have a chance to be in a game for a little while. But he can learn in different ways." Burke was penciled in as a starter after the Jazz acquired his rights from the Minnesota Timberwolves in a draft night trade. Burke spent two seasons at Michigan, leading Wolverines to the national championship game as a sophomore. He averaged 18.6 points, 6.7 assists, 3.2 rebounds and 1.6 steals while shooting 46.3 per cent from the field and 38.4 per cent from 3-point range in his final collegiate season before turning pro. Corbin said the Jazz will work closely with Burke to keep him from falling behind during his absence.dddddddddddd "Well have him watching," Corbin said. "Were going to miss him on the floor, but were going to do some different things with him to keep getting him up to speed." Veteran point guard John Lucas III likely will be the starter until Burke recovers. Lucas signed with the Jazz as a free agent during the off-season. Lucas has appeared in 174 games during five NBA seasons, making a pair of starts with the Chicago Bulls in the 2011-12 season. He has career averages of 5.1 points and 1.5 assists. Lucas doesnt feel extra pressure with his role suddenly changed from backup mentor to starter. "Im going to come in and do exactly what Ive been doing," Lucas said. "Getting everybody involved. Keep knocking down shots. Keep trying to get wins." Alec Burks, who ran the offence in limited minutes a season ago, could potentially slide over to the point to help out while Burke is sidelined. Beyond using Burks as an emergency point guard, the Jazz will look into trade options and signing potential free agents to shore up their backcourt depth. Currently, Scott Machado and Lester Hudson, who both joined the team in preseason camp, are the only other point guard options on the Jazz roster. cheap nfl jerseys ' ' '
