BUFFALO – Though he understood the need to protect goaltenders, Nazem Kadri said he was a little surprised to receive a three-game suspension for his collision with Wild goaltender Niklas Backstrom. "I didnt quite realize the length was going to be something like this," said Kadri from First Niagara Center in Buffalo on Friday morning. "I maybe thought a fine or a game or two [games] max." Kadri wont be eligible to return until Nov. 21 against Nashville, further hampering the Leafs situation at centre ice. Already forced to move James van Riemsdyk to the middle with Tyler Bozak and Dave Bolland both out, the suspension to Kadri could not come at a more precarious time. "Id have to say this is a new one," Randy Carlyle said with a nervous laugh ahead of a home-and-home set with the Sabres. "You have plan A, B, C and D in the drawer and I think were at E and F right now." Those plans will include 28-year-old Trevor Smith, who rejoined the Leafs from the Marlies following a game in Cleveland on Thursday night. Smith, the Marlies captain, has 12 points in seven AHL games, but had been plugged exclusively on a fourth line in previous stints with the club. "We cant expect Trevor Smith to come up at put him on our fourth line," said Carlyle. "Its unfair to him in this situation. When we had other people ahead of him, we had Bozak, we had Bolland, its a little bit different, but in tonights situation hes going to play a prominent role in an offensive line." Smith joins an unlikely group at centre that includes van Riemsdyk, Jay McClement and Jerred Smithson, who was just inked by the organization to an NHL contract last week. Among the leagues most potent groups at even-strength last season, the Leafs have struggled at times to generate offence this season. Over the past four games – three losses – theyve managed just one even-strength goal, a Joffrey Lupul marker in a 3-1 loss to Boston. Second on the team with 14 points, Kadris absence wont help to address the deficiency. "Thats really the most disappointing part is knowing that were short some guys and really I cant do anything to help, but just play the waiting game right now," Kadri said. Kadri had just deflected a shot on goal from Lupul early in the first period Wednesday night before he forcefully bumped a startled Backstrom with arms extended in the Minnesota crease. Later ejected for a thunderous neutral zone hit on Mikael Granlund, the 23-year-old called the collision with Backstrom accidental, but understood the NHLs recent mandate to increase protection for goaltenders. "I was just trying to go to the net hard to make a play and just ran out of real estate and accidentally bumped into him," said Kadri, who had a hearing with NHL Senior VP of player safety Brendan Shanahan on Thursday afternoon. It was here in Buffalo that an increased mandate for such protection started. Sabres goaltender Ryan Miller was bowled over by Bruins forward Milan Lucic in 2011, leading NHL general managers to request that Shanahan take further action. "I think the temperature of that has changed over the last two years," said Carlyle, acknowledging the role of general managers and ownership around the league. Backstrom was concussed as a result of the incident with Kadri, driving the decision toward a three-game sit-down. "Its definitely understandable," said Kadri, professing hope that Backstrom was okay. "I know theyve kind of cracked down on the interference with the goaltenders and players [have] got to be aware of their surroundings now. That being said, it was unintentional." wholesale jerseys .Y. -- Bills quarterback Thad Lewis missed his second straight practice on Thursday and remains questionable for Sundays game against the Kansas City Chiefs. nfl jerseys china .C. -- The Carolina Hurricanes are making some moves the day after the official end of the NHL lockout. http://www.wholesalejerseychinastore.com/ . -- There were no smiles of accomplishment in the Trail Blazers locker-room on Tuesday night. wholesale nfl jerseys . Major League Soccer postponed that game until Sunday, after the storm has moved out. As of midday Saturday, all four big college basketball games in the state and the Denver Nuggets game against the Minnesota Timberwolves were still on. DENVER -- George Karl was in a foul mood after his team squandered a 24-point lead and nearly the game against a Minnesota Timberwolves squad playing much of the contest without its star player. "Worst win of the year," the Denver Nuggets coach proclaimed. Hey, it sure beat the alternative. Ty Lawson scored 24 points, including four free throws in the final 17.6 seconds, to help the Nuggets hold on for a 113-107 win Wednesday night over the Timberwolves, who lost All-Star forward Kevin Love to a mild concussion in the first quarter. "Im happy that we won but Im not very happy with the way we won," Karl said. "It was a very disappointing win." But there are no style points for victories and the Nuggets need all they can accumulate to remain in the thick of the Western Conference playoff race. So, Lawson wont make any apologies for how his team won. "Listen, right now well take a bad win," Lawson said. "As long as its in the win column, its good. I know Coach is mad because we were up 24. It shows were immature." Took the words right out of Karls mouth. "Theres an immaturity to how we finish games off," Karl said. "Theres an immaturity to how we play with leads. "Fortunately, we figured out how to win it. It wasnt very pretty." Up by as many as 24 points, Denver saw the Timberwolves steadily climb back into the game, even tying it late in the fourth quarter on a 3-pointer by Martell Webster. All this without their best player on the floor, too. Love sustained a head injury early in the game after taking an inadvertent elbow from JaVale McGee when the Nuggets centre went up for a jumper. Love had missed all five of his shots before being knocked out of the game. He was going to be kept overnight at an area hospital for precautionary reasons. "It was pretty bad, but hopefully he will be all right," said guard J.J. Barea, who had a career-high 15 assists. "As soon as he got hit, I knew that he was out. He was talking, but he wasnt all there, though." Minnesota was trailing by three when Love went crashing to the court. With the UCLA product sidelined, Denver went on a 42-21 run to open up a sizable gap. That looked to be game, set and match. Only, the Timberwolves came roaring back, tying the game on Websters 3-pointer with 1:41 left. But Lawson secured the win at the line by draining four free throws to turn away the banged-up Timberwwolves, who were also without Luke Ridnour (ankle).dddddddddddd "We dug ourselves too big of a hole," said Derrick Williams, who finished with 27 points. "You dont want to go down that path." As for Love, well, there was a certain shock factor after he went down. "Kevin is our go-to guy," Williams said. "But I always say, injuries create opportunities for everybody else and people have to step up when their name is called." Williams certainly answered the call. So did Anthony Randolph, who led the team with 28 points to pick up the slack for the Timberwolves, who have dropped seven straight. "One name -- Anthony Randolph," Barea said. He did it all." Rookie Kenneth Faried turned in another strong performance, as he finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds. This was on the heels of a 27-point, 17-rebound effort against Golden State two nights ago. The high-energy forward was just as difficult to contain for the Timberwolves, especially after Love went down. Early in the opening quarter, Faried was shaken up when Love gave him a hard shoulder to the chest as he flew down the lane after a rebound. Faried fell to the floor and had to be helped off, only to quickly return. Top reserve and team leader Al Harrington was noticeably limping up and down the court as he tries to play through a torn meniscus in his right knee. Harrington saw only 22 minutes of action, but still had 11 points. This is a banged-up Nuggets team that hasnt been healthy for most of the season. But theyre steadily inching closer to having a full contingent. Wilson Chandler (strained hip) thinks he will be ready by at least Sunday, while Danilo Gallinari is just starting to regain his touch after breaking his left thumb last month. Gallinari came up clutch against the Timberwolves, scoring seven of his 18 points in the final 4:17. Still, it was a lot closer than Gallinari & Co. anticipated after such a big lead. "There was a lot of intensity, but we cannot be very happy after this," Gallinari said. "This cannot happen again." NOTES: Timberwolves coach Rick Adelman had a recent conversation with PG Ricky Rubio, whos out for the season with a torn ACL in his left knee. "He seems to be in real good spirits," Adelman said. ... Minnesota G Wayne Ellington (back spasms) didnt play. ... Nuggets G Arron Afflalo finished with 21 points. cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ' ' '
