ARLINGTON, Texas -- With the way Bartolo Colon was dominating on the mound, all the Oakland Athletics needed was the early run they scored off Yu Darvish. Now they just about have a stranglehold on the AL West after beating the Texas Rangers twice in less than 24 hours. Colon scattered seven hits over eight scoreless innings and the division-leading As won 1-0 Saturday, stretching their division lead over Texas to 5 1/2 games with two weeks left in the regular season. "I dont think its much difference because last year we wanted to win every game, and right now we feel like we want to win every game still," said Josh Donaldson, who drew a walk in the first and scored the games only run. "If anything, it might be a little bit different for them. ... Now theyre looking up at us and trying to catch us." Oakland overcame a five-game deficit against the Rangers in the final nine games last year, including a season-ending three-game sweep at home to clinch the division. Texas has 15 games left -- but only one against the As in Sundays series finale. The As won for the seventh time in eight games and have already clinched the key division series. They built a 9-2 lead in Friday nights opener and held on to win 9-8 after Texas had a six-run eighth. "Its big for us to be able to pull these victories off," As centre fielder Coco Crisp said. "One was weird, the other one today was just a pitchers duel." Colon (16-6) struck out seven and lowered what is already his career-best ERA to 2.73. The 40-year-old right-hander became the first to reach 20 victories against Texas, his most wins in his career against any team and the most by any pitcher against Texas -- breaking what had been a tie with Bert Blyleven, Dennis Leonard and Jack Morris. "Bartolo was just absolutely phenomenal today and didnt really give them that much of a chance," Donaldson said. Darvish (12-9) struck out 10 over seven innings in his fourth 1-0 loss of the season. The right-hander from Japan has lost his last four starts, the last two by 1-0 scores, and is winless his last six. Texas scored two runs or less for Darvish his last seven starts. That includes his 2-1 win at Houston on Aug. 12 when he took a no-hitter into the eighth inning. "I cant control it. I cant do anything about it. The only thing I can do is concentrate on the batter in front of me," Darvish said through an interpreter, insisting that he is not frustrated. "As a pitcher, you cant control how many runs are scored. Am I going to go into the lineup and help the lineup? I cant." Darvish struck out the side in the first, but Donaldson walked and scored on a two-out double by Brandon Moss into the right-field corner. Second baseman Ian Kinslers relay throw to the plate was a bit up the line. Colon walked one before Grant Balfour worked the ninth for his 38th save in 40 chances. Texas has lost all five games on this homestand, and is 2-10 in September. "It put us in second place. Thats about it," manager Ron Washington said. "Weve still got games left to play. Were going to continue to play." Other than the As last season, only two other teams have overcome deficits of five games or more with 15 or fewer games left since 1969, according to STATS. In 2007, Philadelphia had a 5 1/2-game deficit against the New York Mets with 15 games left, the same the Rangers face now. The St. Louis Cardinals were 5 1/2 games behind Houston with 11 games remaining in 2001. Darvish had his majors-best 12th game of at least 10 strikeouts this season, and the 20th in his 58 career games. He also surpassed 250 strikeouts, becoming only the fourth pitcher to accomplish that within his first two MLB seasons. The others were Tim Lincecum, Dwight Gooden and Herb Score. NOTES: The 12:06 p.m. start was the earliest ever at Rangers Ballpark, which is in its 20th season. And it came after a 4-hour, 9-minute game Friday night that matched the fourth-longest nine-inning game in park history. That game ended at 11:16 p.m. ... The last MLB pitcher with four 1-0 losses in the same season was Orel Hershiser in 1989. ... Bringing his multifaceted game to a new audience in England, Forte ran for 145 yards and a touchdown, and the Bears held on to beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 24-18 on Sunday in the fifth annual NFL regular-season game at Wembley Stadium.RIGA, Latvia -- After consistently outplaying the opposition en route to her first national title, Canadian skip Rachel Homan was due for a clunker. It came in her first appearance at the world womens curling championship. Homan started off slowly and never found her rhythm Saturday at the Volvo Sports Center, dropping a 6-4 decision to Eve Muirhead of Scotland. The Canadian skip fell behind early in the round-robin opener for both teams. Canada tied the game in the seventh end but Scotland scored one in the eighth and stole another point in the ninth. "We made several mistakes, probably way more than we normally make," Homan said. "Well learn from them and play much better next game." Homan shot just 73 per cent on the day, well behind Muirhead at 92 per cent. Scotland shot 81 per cent as a team to 74 per cent for Canada. "It might be a little nerves," said Canadian coach Earle Morris. "We would not expect to have that happen again. But I was really proud of how they were able to fight back. "They held their composure and then we just had a little tough luck in the ninth end, gave up a steal and that was the game." Homan and her teammates from the Ottawa Curling Club came in full of confidence after losing just one round-robin game at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts last month in Kingston, Ont. But it was Muirhead -- a four-time world junior champion -- who set the early tone. She started strong and forced Homan to go for a triple takeout with her final throw of the first end. The Canadian skip managed to clear two stones and Muirhead came through with a draw for a 2-0 lead. Canada gave up another point in the second end after Alison Kreviazuk burned a rock. The Canadian second lost her balance while sweeping and her knee touched the stone as she fell to the ice. Homan finally got on the board in the fifth end. She used her last-rock advantage to draw inside the four-foot to score a pair. Muirhead padded her lead in the sixth end with a takeout to score one but Homan came through with a tricky takeout for two to pull even in the seventh. The Scottish skip took the lead again with a single in the eighth end. Canada had an error-filled ninth end and it proved costly. Kreviazuk and third Emma Miskew were both visibly frustrated with their efforts and Homan also had trouble. Miskew had an unlucky pick and Homan couldnt get past a guard with her firrst stone.dddddddddddd Her second throw was heavy to allow Scotland to steal a point. "It was too bad, the game could have gone a lot differently had we not had that pick," Homan said. "Thats all right, thats the way the game goes sometimes. You just learn from it and move on. "That wasnt the only mistake we made, thats for sure." The Canadian team arrived in Latvia on Wednesday evening and held two practice sessions before the game -- one at a local club and one at the tournament venue. "Its the first time on this ice so you havent got it all figured out," Morris said. "You havent figured out the weight. "You dont necessarily have the rocks figured out as well as you might and so when youre trying to play tougher shots as we did in the ninth, sometimes they dont end up where you expect them." Muirhead was steady throughout and seemed to always be in control. "We just played consistently well and scored in the right ends," she said. Canada is scheduled to play Denmark and host Latvia on Sunday. Morris is expecting a bounce-back effort from the Canadian side. "I expect that theyll be a little frustrated, a little angry that they didnt get a W and didnt play better," he said. "So I think well be really good the next game." Round-robin play will continue through Thursday, with the medal games set for March 24. A couple hundred fans were in attendance in the cosy 1,000-seat arena. There are just a few rows of seating on either side of the ice. Homan skipped Canada to a silver medal at the 2010 world junior championships. She is hoping to win Canadas first world womens title since Manitobas Jennifer Jones won in 2008. Edmonton skip Heather Nedohin finished third at last years world championship in Lethbridge, Alta. Switzerlands Mirjam Ott beat Margaretha Sigfridsson of Sweden for the 2012 title. There were some high-scoring games in the tournaments opening draw. American Erika Brown dumped Italys Diana Gaspari 10-3 and two-time world champion Andrea Schopp of Germany outscored Russias Anna Sidorova 11-9. Denmarks Lene Nielsen topped Chinas Bingyu Wang 11-4 and Switzerlands Silvana Tirinzoni edged Japans Satsuki Fujisawa 7-6. In the evening, Tirinzoni whipped Italy 9-3 to sit on top of the leaderboard at 2-0. Russia beat China 6-4 and Sigfridsson opened with a 7-4 win over Latvias Iveta Stasa-Satsune. cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ' ' '
