BOSTON - The Toronto Blue Jays, the presumptive favourites to win the American League East when the 2013 season began, instead watched the Red Sox celebrate as division champions on Friday night. Ace left-hander Jon Lester paced the Red Sox to a 6-3 win over Toronto with seven innings of one run ball. He improved to 15-8. Koji Uehara, the first reliable closer in Boston since Jonathan Papelbon left for Philadelphia two years ago, notched his 20th save. BLUE JAYS WATCH RED SOX CELEBRATE Prior to the game, Mark DeRosa told TSN.ca if the Red Sox clinched against the Blue Jays this weekend, he hoped Toronto players would watch the celebration and be energized by the scene, wanting to experience a similar feeling next year. Here is some post-game reaction: "These guys know whats at stake," manager John Gibbons said of his ballclub. "They know where were trying to go. Theyve got a great team over there, they really do. They ran away with a good division. Its not even close right now so that speaks volumes of how good they are. Tonights a perfect example, good pitching, good defence and a lot of hitting. I mean, thats a good recipe." "Its really frustrating because weve got the talent to be like that," said starter Esmil Rogers, who didnt get out of the third inning and fell to 5-8 on the year. "Weve got so many opportunities to do that and we didnt make it so I think God made a decision to give the opportunity to this team to make it. I hope that God gives the opportunity to us for next year so we can be celebrating like that, too." "I mean thats what you play for," said DeRosa, who played on the great Braves teams of the late 1990s and early 2000s and won a World Series with the Giants in 2010. "I know you go through different phases in your career, wanting to establish yourself and then provide for your family but at the same time thats what its about. Hopefully it triggers something and guys are ready to roll. I mean, theyre a perfect example of a team that loves playing together and finding a way to win. They dont kill you with a bunch of names. Big Papi is one of the best hitters in the game. I mean, they just have a really good team top to bottom and they play together." RASMUS INJURED As of the publishing of this piece, centre fielder Colby Rasmus was in a Boston hospital undergoing a CT scan on his face. Rasmus was injured while taking his position before the bottom of the first inning. Anthony Gose, playing right field, made a warm-up throw in Rasmus direction. Rasmus wasnt looking and the ball hit him near the left eye. Gose was shaken after the game. "I threw the ball and I hit him in the face," said Gose. "I thought he was looking at me and I just tried to throw it to him and I hit him right in the face." Rasmus injury forced a complete restructuring of the outfield. Anthony Gose, who was to play in right field, moved to centre field. Rajai Davis shifted from left field to right. Kevin Pillar entered the game in Rasmus lineup spot and played left field. wholesale jerseys . NHL hockey is returning to the Manitoba capital. NEW YORK -- It seems Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao will be forever linked, regardless of whether they ever face each other in the ring. The two have danced around the richest fight in boxing for several years, unable to come to terms. Meanwhile, their animosity has grown to the point that Pacquiao has a pending defamation lawsuit alleging Mayweather unfairly accused him of using performance-enhancing drugs. So its not surprising that Mayweather spent just as much time answering questions about Pacquiao on Tuesday as he did about Victor Ortiz, the welterweight champion whom hell face in his next fight on Sept. 17 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. "Ive never said that Manny Pacquiao was taking steroids, I never said he was taking enhancement drugs," said Mayweather, who failed to turn up for a court-ordered deposition in Las Vegas earlier this month involving the defamation suit. "I want to fight the best they got out there, not just him, the best they got out there," Mayweather said, "and if hes on the list as one of the best guys, then absolutely." Mayweather said hes willing to fight Pacquiao if there is random blood and urine testing, which is more stringent than the protocol used by most state athletic associations. Mayweather said Pacquiaos team would only agree to blood and urine testing at certain times. "Its not just Pacquiao, its sports, period," Mayweather said. "If you look at sports in the Olympics, theyre cheating. Everyone is cheating. And I never once said Manny Pacquiao was cheating, only thing I said was this: Me and any other opponent I face must take the test." Mayweather will be returning to the ring for the first time since defeating Shane Mosley in May 2010, though the undefeated former champion has made plenty of news since then. Last Friday, 21-year-old Anthony Cliff filed a lawsuit accusing Mayweather of ordering his bodyguards to attack the man outside the Palms Casino Resort on March 27, 2010. The lawsuit accuses Mayweather of assault and battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress and negligent hiring, training, supervision and retention of employees. Mayweather also faces felony charges stemming from a domestic argument and misdemeanour harassment and battery charges in separate cases. "t;When youre young, black and rich, you go through things in life," Mayweather said.dddddddddddd. "But Im a strong individual. I can survive through anything." Mayweathers adviser, Leonard Ellerbe, declined to discuss the litigation. "We focus on the business part and the boxing part," Ellerbe said. "We let the attorneys handle the legal stuff." Mayweather and Ellerbe joined several hundred fans inside the Hudson Theater in New York City to kick off a promotional tour for the fight against Ortiz, who is coming off a career-defining victory over Andre Berto that made him the WBC welterweight champion. Ortiz said he doesnt mind that people want to talk about Pacquiao -- even if that person is Mayweather -- because hes staring at the opportunity of a lifetime. "Im supposed to be a piece of nothing, Im not supposed to be here, according to the statistics," said Ortiz, whose parents abandoned him when he was young, forcing him and his five siblings to live in foster care. "Im tired of, You cant do this, you cant do that." Early in his career, Ortiz was anointed the next Mexican-American superstar by Oscar De La Hoya, whose company promotes him. But his meteoric rise met a wall when he fought Marcos Maidana two years ago. Ortiz was losing after six rounds and essentially quit in the ring, one boxings cardinal sins, and fans and the media were quick to write him off. Ortiz has been spectacular on the slow road to redemption, though, and in April climbed off the canvas twice to beat Berto as the heavy underdog and win the welterweight championship. "I realize hes a great fighter, but since I was nine years old, I always said Id fight Mayweather one day as champion of the world, and check it out," Ortiz said. "Its crazy." Ortiz said he asked to fight Mayweather or Pacquiao after his most recent fight, even though he heard whispers from people -- including some in his own promotional company -- who said he was overmatched or out of his mind. But he wanted to fight the best in the world, and depending who you ask, he may have achieved that by landing a shot at Mayweather. As for Mayweathers plan to fight Pacquiao next? "Theres only one problem," Ortiz said. "Im fighting Pacquiao next." ' ' '
