KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Royals manager Ned Yost admitted that he often manages an entire game around getting the ball to reliever Wade Davis in the eighth inning and closer Greg Holland in the ninth. The fact that Yordano Ventura gave him six solid innings made things even easier. Ventura returned from a sore elbow to keep the St. Louis Cardinals off balance, and Kansas City rallied for three runs in the sixth inning before the bullpen closed out a 3-2 win Thursday night that ended a string of eight straight home losses to its cross-state rivals. "The bullpen was fantastic tonight," Yost said. Of course, so was Ventura. The hard-throwing right-hander was skipped his previous time through the rotation because of the ailment, but looked sharp in his return. Ventura (3-5) pitched to contact and took advantage of some sharp defence, which helped him to limit the damage whenever he ran into trouble. "Everything was good," Ventura said through a translator. "I wasnt nervous. I was very anxious. I wanted to pitch well to help the team win." He wasnt in line for the win until the Royals rallied for three runs off Michael Wacha (4-4) in the sixth inning, and Francisley Bueno and Davis each pitched a perfect inning in relief. Holland made things interesting in the ninth. Oscar Taveras led off with a grounder toward second base that Omar Infante fielded deep in the hole and threw awkwardly to first base. Umpire Dan Iassogna initially ruled the throw beat Taveras to the bag, but a video review showed that he was clearly safe. Holland proceeded to strike out Jhonny Peralta, but a wild pitch sent pinch runner Randal Grichuk to second base. Holland then struck out Jon Jay and Peter Bourjos to end the game. The Royals took the first two games of the four-game, two-city series at Busch Stadium, and then lost 5-2 in 11 innings on Wednesday night before taking the series finale. Kansas City improved to 6-2 against National League clubs this season, while its slumping cross-state rivals lost for the seventh time in their past eight games. The game was expected to be a showdown between two of the games bright young pitchers in Ventura, with his 100 mph fastball, and Wacha, who emerged for St. Louis last season. Neither of them disappointed. Ventura left two runners aboard in the first inning and a runner on third base in each of the next three innings. Alex Gordon then helped him out of the fifth, when he threw out Yadier Molina trying to stretch a single into a double with a strong throw from left field. The call was confirmed after a review that lasted 3 minutes, 30 seconds. Wacha only allowed two hits through the first five innings before Alcides Escobar started the Royals rally with a double in the sixth. Nori Aoki followed with an RBI double and Eric Hosmer guided a single through a drawn-in infield to knot the game 2-all. Salvador Perez, who had been in a 2-for-24 slump at home, followed with a go-ahead single. "Wacha was real good up the point of the sixth inning and thats consecutive starts where weve had starters come out and be real good and just hit a wall," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. "We just werent able to get enough offence back after that." The fact that Aoki had a part in the Royals sixth-inning rally was perhaps fitting. The outfielder was leading off in the first inning when he took a pitch low and inside. He was still leaning slightly over the plate when Molina tried to return the ball to Wacha, and the throw instead ricocheted hard off Aokis helmet and toward the third-base dugout. Aoki crumpled into a heap and lay in the dirt for several minutes before resuming his at-bat. He later grounded out, but hurt the Cardinals with his double during the Royals decisive rally. "Yadi was real apologetic," Yost said. "Nori was just like, OK, OK." NOTES: Cardinals 2B Kolten Wong left in the fifth inning with soreness in his left shoulder, which he hurt diving for a ball Tuesday night in St. Louis. Daniel Descalso replaced him. ... Royals RHP Jeremy Guthrie starts a four-game series against the Yankees on Friday night. Cardinals RHP Lance Lynn will start for St. Louis to open its three-game set in Toronto. Thats what the Houston Texans are counting on from the South Carolina defensive end after skipping a chance to take a quarterback -- their top need -- with the top pick Thursday night. Jarome Iginla and Zdeno Chara each had two goals, Tuukka Rask made 25 saves and the Bruins beat the Philadelphia Flyers 6-1 Saturday. Derek Newton . Stairs, who holds the major-league record with 23 pinch-hit home runs, was a disappointment for the Nationals. The 43-year-old batted just .154 with two RBIs in 56 games. He was 6 for 39 as a pinch hitter.PARIS -- Tomas Berdych is just one win away from securing a berth in the ATP World Tour Finals after beating Fernando Verdasco of Spain 6-3, 7-5 in the second round of the Paris Masters on Tuesday. The 2005 Paris champion won five straight games in the first set to rally from a 3-1 deficit, hitting 12 winners to only three for Verdasco. Berdych then broke the Spaniard twice for a 5-2 lead in the second set but wasted four match points to let Verdasco level at 5-5. Yet, the fifth-seeded Czech broke Verdasco again with a forehand pass before clinching victory with a crosscourt backhand winner. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France beat Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain 6-3, 6-4, and Andy Roddick downed Julien Benneteau of France 6-4, 6-4 to also move into the third round. The sixth-seeded Tsonga will automatically secure a spot for the ATP tour finals in London by winning his next match. Roddick made only 12 unforced errors compared to 25 for Benneteau. The 13th-seeded American hit a forehand return winner followed by a running forehand winner down the line to take the first set. The 2003 U.S. Open champion rallied from 3-1 down in the final set to convert his first match point with a backhand volley. "Its a lot slower than last year," Roddick said about the surface. "I dont know if they enjoy keeping us guessing, because you never know what youre going to get when you come to this tournament as far as what the court is going to be. "Certainly makes for an entertaining first five minutes when you hit every year, though." Roddick can no longer qualify for the tour finals but he can still end the year in the top 10. The last time Roddick failed to finish a season in the top 10 was 2001. "Im looking forward to this off-season and getting an extended period to train, come back, and feel like Im actually ready," Roddick said. Meanwhile, Feliciano Lopez of Spaiin, Ivan Dodig of Croatia, Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine, Jeremy Chardy of France and John Isner of the U.dddddddddddd. won their first-round matches. Lopez beat Michael Llodra of France 7-6 (7), 6-3, Dodig rallied past Fabio Fognini of Italy 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, Stakhovsky defeated Kei Nishikori of Japan 6-4, 6-3, and Isner edged Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland 6-7 (3), 7-5, 7-6 (5). Dodig will next take on top-seeded Novak Djokovic. Lopez saved four set points in the tiebreaker before jumping to a 4-0 lead in the second set and firing an ace to clinch victory. The Spanish lefty will next play eighth-seeded Gael Monfils of France. Nishikori got a cold dose of reality after stunning Djokovic last weekend to reach the final of the Swiss Indoors in Basel. He could only convert two of 14 break chances against Stakhovsky, who won to meet Viktor Troicki of Serbia. Marcel Granollers of Spain had not recovered from his heroics of last weekend either as the Valencia Open winner lost the first set 6-3 to Chardy before retiring because of an ankle injury. Chardy broke Granollers at 3-2 and clinched victory by cracking three aces in the final game. The Frenchman moved on to face second-seeded Andy Murray. Isner relied on his strong serve against Wawrinka, slamming 20 aces including one on match point. "Ive been in that situation, a bunch of tight matches, where although Im maybe a little tired, Im still able to hit my biggest serve," Isner said. "Thats what I did." Isner is currently ranked 25th and hopes to rise into the top 10. "Its something I definitely think I can do," Isner said. "It wont happen this year but its going to be one of my goals in 2012." In evening matches, Juan Monaco of Argentina cruised past Donald Young of the United States 6-4, 6-2 and Richard Gasquet of France defeated Kevin Anderson of South Africa 6-4, 7-6 (4). ' ' '
