ATLANTA -- Julio Teheran said he took the mound with one goal: "Show everybody what I can do." Teheran showed he can beat Jose Fernandez, the Marlins young star who ranks third in the majors with his 2.33 ERA. Freddie Freeman hit a two-run homer in the first inning, Teheran outpitched Fernandez in a matchup of young right-handers, and the Atlanta Braves beat Miami 2-1 Friday night for their fifth straight win. "Ive got an idea these kids are going to match up a lot in the future," said Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez. Fernandez, 21, took his first loss since July 7 but allowed only one hit after Freemans homer. Fernandez (10-6) gave up three hits in six innings for the Marlins, who have lost five straight. Teheran, 22, yielded one run and four hits in 6 1-3 innings. A key for Teheran (11-7) was overcoming a long third inning, when the Marlins scored their only run. "I just had one bad inning, and I was able to get out of that inning," Teheran said. Fernandez endured a similarly taxing fourth inning before Brian McCann finally struck out in a 14-pitch at-bat and the Braves left the bases loaded. "I was really surprised that both kids that young in those innings, they didnt rattle," Gonzalez said. The long at-bat helped limit Fernandez to only six innings. "McCann, that was a great at-bat," said Marlins manager Mike Redmond. "Jose did a great job striking him out in that situation. But it cost him a lot of pitches. Thats what good teams do; they find a way to grind guys out. "I thought he gave us everything he had tonight." Each starter had eight strikeouts. Before facing Freeman in the first, Fernandez had allowed only two homers in his last 15 starts since June 1 -- and none in his first five outings this month. Freemans homer off the top of the wall in centre field drove in Elliot Johnson, who doubled to right. The other hit allowed by Fernandez was Freemans double in the fourth. After the double, Fernandez smiled and shook his head as he looked at Freeman standing on second base. "I told Freeman How can I get you out? when he got to second base on that double," Fernandez said. "And then he starts laughing." With closer Craig Kimbrel unavailable after pitching in three straight games, Anthony Varvaro got six outs, including a perfect ninth inning, for his first career save. Fernandez led off the third by sliding in head-first for a triple, the first of his career. He scored on Christian Yelichs single. The slide gave Redmond a scare only a few feet away in Miamis dugout along the third-base line. "You want him to play hard, but at the same time you want him to play smart," Redmond said. "I wouldnt have been disappointed if hed stopped at second. And I definitely wouldnt have been disappointed if hed slid feet-first instead of head-first. I hope we dont ever see that again. But I love the energy. "He brings a spark to our team when we need him. Hes a special kid." Braves shortstop Andrelton Simmons made two strong defensive plays in the sixth. He adjusted to field Justin Ruggianos grounder after the ball bounced off third baseman Chris Johnsons glove and then made a strong throw to first for the out. Simmons dove to his right to snare Placido Polancos line drive for the second out. "If anybody in the major leagues other than Simmons is playing shortstop, we probably lose that game," Gonzalez said. Giancarlo Stanton led off the eighth with a single. Ruggiano then hit a fly ball to right field and Stanton was thrown out by Jordan Schafer while trying to advance to second. NOTES: The Braves optioned C Evan Gattis to Triple-A Gwinnett after the game to receive regular playing time the next three days. He can be recalled after Gwinnetts season ends on Monday. ... REGINA -- Even a new head coach couldnt help the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The Saskatchewan Roughriders crushed the Blue Bombers 52-0 on Sunday, dealing Tim Burke a loss in his CFL debut as a head coach. Burke replaced the fired Paul LaPolice last weekend. "Im not used to getting my ass kicked," Burke said. "We got down early and the score snowballed." Saskatchewan took full advantage of the reeling Bombers, ending a five-game losing streak to stay competitive in the CFL West. The Roughriders are now 4-5, but within reach of the third-place Calgary Stampeders in the hotly-contested division. "Our guys are hungry," said Saskatchewan head coach Corey Chamblin. "They needed this. This is the one we really needed to move on." Saskatchewan amassed a net offence of 422 yards compared to a meagre 102 for Winnipeg (2-7). "I cant think of any aspect of the game that we won," said Burke. Bombers quarterback Joey Elliot thinks his team needs to regroup and refocus. "We have to move on to the game next week," said Elliott, who completed nine of 19 passes for only 61 yards with one interception. His reliever Alex Brink was also ineffective, completing five of seven passes for 35 yards. "When the wheels fall off, the wheels fall off," said Elliott. "Its going to happen. The best thing about it is that weve got another game in seven days." Chamblin, on the other hand, was pleased with his teams performance in every aspect. "We would win in a couple of phases, each one would take its turn," said Chhamblin.dddddddddddd "But today we won in all phases." Darian Durant threw touchdown passes of 25 and 21 yards to Weston Dressler. He left the game early in the third quarter with what appeared to be a lower-body injury and was replaced by backup quarterback Drew Willy, who fired a 43-yard touchdown pass to Terence Jeffers-Harris. Willy also scored a touchdown himself on a one-yard plunge late in the game. Durant completed 13 of 19 passes for 168 yards, and also carried the ball four times for 38 yards. According to Chamblin, he was kept out of the game strictly as a precaution. Saskatchewans Kory Sheets rushed for 106 yards, including a lengthy 37-yard dash. He also caught two passes for a total of 16 yards. Tyron Brackenridge blocked a Mike Renaud punt and returned it 15 yards for a Saskatchewan touchdown. He also intercepted an Elliott pass and returned it 39 yards to set up a field goal. Sandro DeAngelis converted all four Rider majors and kicked field goals of 50, 29, 46, 30 and 26 yards. Chris Milo added punt singles of 39 and 68 yards. The Riders led 10-0 after the first quarter, 28-0 at the half and 42-0 after three quarters. Last year Saskatchewan defeated Winnipeg 21-7 in the Labour Day Classic. The Riders have now prevailed in eight straight. The last time the Bombers won it was in 2004. The two teams meet again in Winnipeg next Sunday in the Banjo Bowl. Burke, for one, is hoping for better results. "All I can do is try my best," he said. "Weve got to dig down deep and pull out the best performance we can find." cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ' ' '
