CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Michael Jordan scoffs at the idea of tanking games. The fiery 14-time All-Star who helped the Chicago Bulls to six NBA championships simply doesnt have it in his makeup to intentionally lose games this season just so his Charlotte Bobcats can get a better draft pick next year. Forget that the NBA would likely hand down a hefty fine and fans would probably boycott if a team admitted to doing that, the Bobcats owner said purposely losing games is just not part of his competitive DNA. "I dont know if some teams have thought of that. Thats not something that we would do," Jordan told The Associated Press on Friday. "I dont believe in that." He then laughed heartily and said, "If that was my intention I never would have paid (free agent) Al Jefferson $13 million a year." Its not that the Bobcats couldnt use a player like Andrew Wiggins at Kansas or Dukes Jabari Parker -- two college freshman who many view as potential NBA stars. Jordan, 50, hasnt been able to translate his on-court success to winning as an NBA owner and executive. The Bobcats are just 62-168 in his three full seasons as majority owner. They were 21-61 last season. Still, he doesnt believe there are shortcuts to winning. While the 2014 NBA draft offers hopes to fledgling teams with a host of talented players, Jordan made it clear he isnt thinking about losing. "Its not guaranteed (the player) you are going to get is going to be that star anyway," Jordan said. "I did read that certain teams are thinking about doing it. But Im not one of them. "So lets alleviate that conversation." Jordan, relaxed and at ease at the Bobcats headquarters hours before his teams regular season home opener, has been widely criticized for his failures with the Bobcats and for his struggles in the front office with the Washington Wizards. He said some of that comes with the territory. "Its somewhat unfair, but you come to expect it," said Jordan, who became the majority owner of the Bobcats in 2010. "You set certain standards as a player that transcend whatever you do. It goes where you go. You will be wearing that around your neck so that when people see the name they expect the results. "Its somewhat unfair but it is what it is. I dont let it define me." However, Jordan said he remains committed to the Bobcats and said hes tried to be transparent with the fans about the direction of the team. This past off-season he used the amnesty clause on forward Tyrus Thomas, a move that took his hefty contract off the books. Jordan still has to pay Thomas $18 million, but the move freed up that money under the salary cap as part of a one-time policy under the new collective bargaining agreement. The Bobcats used that money to sign Jefferson to three-year $41 million contact and to re-sign guard Gerald Henderson for $18 million over three seasons. "I mean, that was a statement," Jordan said of his commitment to the Bobcats. "I still have to pay more than $17 million, but it was a move that we needed to make to build and go get a guy like Big Al." Jordan also feels like he finally has the right man in charge in new coach Steve Clifford, a long-time NBA assistant who took over for Mike Dunlap, who was fired after one season. "Were focused on what were trying to do," Jordan said. "I think the direction were moving is positive. ... It is baby steps. Every now and again you have a hiccup. But I must admit that were headed in the right direction and Im very happy with that." The Bobcats, however, along with other small market NBA teams, are at a disadvantage with potential free agents like LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony and Chris Bosh -- who all could be a part of the 2014 class. The stars want to go "where the lights are," Jordan said. He said last year he didnt think the new CBA did enough to help level the playing field for small market teams in terms of helping them land -- or keep -- a high-profile difference maker in free agency. A year later, after seeing the system at work, he has eased up on that stance. "Its better," Jordan said. "We are still going through and seeing the full effects of it. From a business standpoint if you operate your team in the right way it gives you a chance to break even or be profitable. And it makes it more difficult for your talent to get up and go somewhere else. "You can provide more advantages than other teams to keep your player. Its a fair assessment that if you get your star you can get parity within the league. I think parity is starting to happen within the league." Jordan doesnt feel players orchestrating deals that land a trio of stars in big markets to form a "big three" is necessarily good for the game. "Im not a big advocate for it," Jordan said. "I came from an era where it didnt happen. If that happened to evolve from the draft, then you seemed pretty smart." Now hes trying to make that happen in Charlotte. jerseys from china . INDIANAPOLIS -- Peyton Manning and Jim Irsay agree on one thing: The Manning Era isnt over in Indianapolis. Manning said Thursday he hopes to return to practice this year and still holds out hope of playing if doctors say he is finally healed from his Sept. 8 neck surgery. Irsay, the team owner, said he expects the four-time NFL MVP still has some good years in that right arm. There are some big questions looming in Indy. The Colts (0-8) must decide whether to opt out of Mannings five-year contract or pay a US$28 million bonus to keep him on the roster. And if they have a high draft pick next year, Indy also will have to decide whether to take Mannings heir apparent, someone like Andrew Luck or Landry Jones. "Its something you talk about and scenarios, who could be behind Peyton and how long you want him to sit and how much money you have committed to quarterbacks," Irsay said. "I think theoretically, you could have Peyton for two or three more good years and then have someone behind him, but thats theoretical." Manning hasnt played since having surgery to repair a damaged nerve that caused weakness in his throwing arm. It was his third neck procedure in 19 months, a series of operations that has forced Colts fans to debate when -- or if -- Manning will return. "I think its too early to bury this era," Irsay said during a 40-minute interview. "I think to say that Peyton is done and the era is over is, to me, way, way too premature. Ive always sort of known that era would be decided when Peyton is here. But I dont feel like that era is done." A few hours earlier, Manning made his second impromptu locker room appearance of the season, telling reporters that hes spending every day in rehab and that he hopes to practice with his teammates in December and play in a game later this season. But he hasnt been cleared for football activity by the doctors. Irsay said there was less than a 50 per cent chance Manning would appear in a game this season. "Were still waiting for the fusion to take place, its still going slow with that and we still have some issues with the nerve and the regeneration of the nerve," Manning said. "Theres really not a schedule, a timeline of where I am." Doctors who were not involved with Mannings surgery said it was likely to take two or three months before Indys franchise quarterback could make it back to practice, which is consistent with Mannings comments. Without their franchise quarterback, the Colts are 0-8 for the first time since 1997, and many think it would be foolish to bring Manning back for some meaningless late-season games..dddddddddddd Manning disagrees. "I miss playing, I really do. If I get cleared to play and Im good enough, would I play? Absolutely," he said. "Id love to because thats how Im wired, thats my job and I love my job. "If the doctor says you can go, then Id like to do that," Manning added later. Manning addressed a variety of topics, calling coach Jim Caldwell a "friend," dismissing speculation about the No. 1 pick and even discussing the option clause in his contract. The Colts signed Manning to a five-year deal worth $90 million in late July when it looked as if he would still be ready to play this season. The $18 million annual average matches New Englands Tom Brady for the richest deal in the league. Manning thinks the Colts should see him in action, if possible, before making their decision. "Its a one-year deal with a four-year extension," Manning said. "The team has a right to know where you are physically and where your health is." Irsay said he has no intention of releasing Manning and the two sides could work out a new deal if the quarterback still was not healthy. How close is Manning to returning? Nobody knows. "What you want to see is for him to keep making progress, to get back to the point where you can say hes making all the throws and doing the things he needs to do," Irsay said. "The truth is its a slow progression and to say that he would hit a ceiling on Dec. 15 or Jan. 1 and hes not going to get any better, thats really uncertain." Mannings health and finding a successor are only part of the equation. Some outsiders want a complete overhaul -- getting rid of Caldwell, vice chairman Bill Polian or general manager Chris Polian. Irsay told reporters he wouldnt give up on the Polians, who turned the franchise from an also-ran into a perennial Super Bowl contender, because of eight losses. He also voiced support for Caldwell, saying "not just any guy" could have led the Colts to the AFC title two years ago or four straight wins to clinch the AFC South last year. Manning hopes to have more answers next month. "If Im at a level where Im cleared to practice, then the greatest venue to see where you are is on the practice field," Manning said. Until then, Irsay is pleading for patience. "We have not had this much uncertainty in a long, long time, but I think its exciting," Irsay said. "Im more interested in getting back to greatness and having a chance to sustain it. Im not interested in middling around at 8-8 or 9-7 and sneaking into the playoffs for the next decade." cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ' ' '
