CHICAGO -- Randy Wells is done with allowing off-field distractions get in way of his pitching. Wells pitched six strong innings and Marlon Byrd drove in two runs as the Chicago Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-3 Sunday to avoid a three-game sweep. Wells was impressive again after pitching his first career shutout in Mondays 7-0 win over the Giants. He pitched a two-hitter to outduel Tim Lincecum in his first-career complete game. Wells (7-4) allowed one run while scattering seven hits. He struck out two and walked two. He is 6-1 over his last eight outings after going 0-3 with a 7.38 ERA in his first nine starts once returning from the disabled list. In the last month, Well is pitching more like his 2009 season, when he led all rookies with a 3.05 ERA. "Its a tough thing. You guys keep asking me about who I was in 2009. I wasnt any different in 2010. It was just a tough year, I grinded it out, I made every start, got close to 200 innings. Some things just didnt go my way," said Wells. "There was a lot of stuff off the field that was said and thrown out there that was false. I had to deal with that for the first time in my career. It was a tough thing, it was a learning process and I think this year you just learn to put all things that go on off the field and what is said about you to the side and concentrate on what you need to do." Cubs reliever Sean Marshall pitched a scoreless ninth for his fourth save in eight chances. Cubs closer Carlos Marmol had the day off after blowing Saturdays save and throwing 39 pitches. Chicago won just for the third time in 10 games. Pirates starter Charlie Morton (9-9) allowed four runs, three earned on seven hits. He struck out two and walked five and was done in by two errors by shortstop Ronny Cedeno. Neil Walker hit a two-run shot in the eighth and Derrek Lee had three hits for the Pirates, who have lost six of eight. The Cubs had runners on first and second with no outs in the first three innings, but failed to score until the third thanks to Cedenos error. Trailing 1-0, Carlos Pena hit a sharp grounder to Walker at second base. Walker made a low throw to Cedeno, who was covering second to get one out, but Cedenos throw to Lee at first was wide, allowing Tony Campana to score from second on the overthrow. With two outs in the fourth inning and Koyie Hill on second, Starlin Castro hit a grounder to third baseman Josh Harrison. Harrison fielded the grounder, but his throw to first took Lee off the base so Lee attempted to tag Castro. First baseman umpire Jim Wolf ruled Lees tag did not make contact with Castro. Hill, who never stopped on the base paths ended up scoring from second on the play. Lee argued with Wolf and Pirates manager Clint Hurdle came out of the dugout to also have an animated discussion with Wolf to no avail. "Whats tough is when you put 10 guys on base without having to hit the ball. We were sloppy on the mound, we were sloppy on the field," said Hurdle. "Sometimes its contagious. We just didnt play a good ballgame today. Theres no excuses, we didnt play a good game today. We definitely didnt play well enough to win." The Cubs added to its lead in the fifth. With runners on first and second and no outs, LaHair hit a ball that brushed Mortons jersey. Cedeno fielded the grounder but the ball rolled out of his mitt, allowing LaHair to reach safely on the error. With the bases loaded, Byrd hit a sacrifice fly. Hurdle pulled Morton after he hit Darwin Barney with a pitch to load the bases again. Pirates reliever Tony Watson got Hill to hit a bouncer back to him, but the ball pulled him off the mound forcing him to go to first to get the out, which allowed Pena to score and make it 4-1. "Its obviously command issues. I couldnt get my sinker in the zone," said Morton. "My mentality is the exact same. My mentality is be aggressive and attack guys with my sinker." LaHair hit a two-out, RBI bloop single off Watson in the sixth inning to make it 5-1. LaHair finished with two hits in his season debut. After hitting a go-ahead grand slam in the ninth during Saturdays win, Lee hit an opposite field RBI single in the first inning to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead. Since joining the Pirates, all nine of Lees RBIs have come against the Cubs. Lee is 6 for 9 with a grand slam since returning from the disabled list Saturday. Walker hit a two-run homer off Cubs reliever Jeff Samardzija in the eighth inning. It was Walkers 12 of the season. Byrd added an insurance run in the eighth for the Cubs with an RBI single off Pirates reliever Jose Veras. NOTES: Pirates RHP Jeff Karstens (shoulder soreness) played long toss on Sunday. Prado doubled, homered and drove in five runs, including a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the 10th inning, to lift the Diamondbacks to a 10-6 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday night. "He works hard all the time and sometimes hes too hard on himself," Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said. "He believes the harder he works, the better he is." Nick Evans three-run homer capped Arizonas four-run 10th inning. Evan Marshall (3-2) pitched a scoreless ninth to earn the victory. Marlon Byrd and Cody Asche homered for Philadelphia, which blew a four-run lead and has lost eight of its last 11 games. Chase Utley had three hits and an RBI. The teams combined to use 13 pitchers and pounded out 33 hits in the game that took 4 hours, 20 minutes. Ender Inciarte reached on a bunt single with one out in the 10th and went to third on Didi Gregorius double to right off Antonio Bastardo (4-4). The speedy Inciarte scored easly on Prados fly ball to medium centre field that was caught by light-throwing Ben Revere. "I wanted to put the ball in play and fortunately I hit a fly ball," said Prado, who tied a career-high for RBIs in a game. After an intentional walk to Paul Goldschmidt, pinch-hitter Evans broke the game open with a three-run shot to left. "Its awesome coming from behind," Prado said. "It was a really good win." Philadelphia slugger Ryan Howard went 2 for 5 with two strikeouts in his return to the lineup after a .141 average in his previous 21 games caused manager Ryne Sandberg to bench him for three games. The Phillies jumped all over Josh Collmenter early, cruising to a 6-2 lead before the Diamondbacks battled back against Cliff Lee and the Phillies bullpen. Collmenter allowed six runs on 11 hits in just 2 2-3 innings -- his shortest outing as a starter this season. "There were just too many bad pitches, especially fastballs up and over the plate," Collmenter said. The Phillies pounded out eight hits in the first two innings. Asches two-run homer to right highlighted Philadelphias four-run second that put the Phillies in front 4-1. Lee scored one of the runs in the inning, reaching on Jimmy Rollins double, but he nearly fell rounding third and let out a chuckle halfway to the plate. After Arizona got a run back in the third when Prado went deep, Philadelphia scored twice more, chasing Collmenter in the process, iin the bottom of the inning.dddddddddddd Byrd had a leadoff homer to left and Lee added an RBI single to centre to make it 6-2. "Putting six runs up early was the positive side of things, but we werent able to add on," Sandberg said. Making his second start after spending two months on the DL with an elbow injury, Lee was a tad better than his last outing when he gave up six runs and 12 hits in 5 2-3 innings but still not in his usual form, tossing five innings and giving up three runs on nine hits this time. "It looks like hes still building up arm strength and the balls still not coming out crisp and darting with some life at home plate," Sandberg said. "Hes lacking that right now along with the command." Both Sandberg and Lee said the elbow isnt an issue. Arizona slowly clawed back, getting a run in the fourth on Prados RBI single and two more in the sixth off right-hander Justin De Fratus on Prados two-run double to left that made it 6-5. And the Diamondbacks scored the tying run in the seventh on Inciartes RBI groundout off lefty Mario Hollands. "The bullpen struggled tonight," Sandberg said. "Its just (not making) quality pitches right out of the pen, lacking getting first-hitter outs." The Phillies placed a runner in scoring position with two outs in the bottom of the ninth that featured two replay reviews. However, Grady Sizemore grounded out against Marshall with the winning run on second. Earlier in the inning, second base umpire Dan Iassognas safe call on Reid Brignacs steal attempt was overturned by replay review after a 1-minute, 33-second delay.
