LEXINGTON, Ohio -- This hasnt been a vintage year for Scott Dixon. But that could change at a place hes had success before. Dixon, who has won the IndyCar race at Mid-Ohio each odd calendar year it has been held, had the fastest qualifying time Saturday to take the pole for Sundays event on the road course. "I thought we were going to have a good battle for the pole," No. 2 qualifier Ryan Briscoe said. "But, man, Dixon just blew us away there at the end. He certainly laid one down." The winner at Mid-Ohio in 2007 and 2009, Dixon posted a 1:08.0776 lap time to easily outclass the field of 27 cars. It figured that hed be at his best at one of his favourite layouts. Even though hes a solid third in the drivers standings behind leader Dario Franchitti and second-placed Will Power, in many ways this has been a luckless season for the 31-year-old from Auckland, New Zealand. Hes been a runner-up four times -- and has finished out of the top 10 another four times because of mishaps on the track that werent his fault. Asked if this was the start of his late-season charge, he laughed and said, "It would have to be a hell of a charge. Were a long ways back." Its been a bittersweet season for Dixon. "Weve done a great job to put ourselves in the right positions, especially on the road courses," he continued. "Weve improved our qualifying a lot from last year. So, you know, its been good in many ways. But, obviously, the races and the points just really havent been there for us." Behind Briscoe will be defending Mid-Ohio champ Franchitti, followed by Power, Ryan Hunter-Reay and local favourite Graham Rahal. During qualifying, Justin Wilson broke a vertebra in his back when he spun off the course and hit a bump between Turns 1 and 2 in a single-car accident. He was awake and alert but being held overnight at the hospital. Hell be transported to Indianapolis on Sunday for further evaluation. Simon Pagenaud took over for Wilson and qualified the car at No. 22. Franchitti, a strident spokesman for track safety, said the area of the track where Wilson was injured was pinpointed as a worrisome area during testing a week earlier. "Its been a problem there for a long time," he said. He said the tracks new owners intended to address the problem but had not had an opportunity yet. Dixon credited his cars balance for helping him out on the tight turns and elevations on the course, set in rolling farmland midway between Cleveland and Columbus. "Our car had maybe just had a little better balance," Dixon said. "It seemed to be able, especially on hot tires, to get up to speed pretty quick. I dont know why. Obviously, we cant see what the other cars are dealing with. But from my car, the split times at Turns 1 and 11 indicated we were gaining a little bit on some of the others." Having won half of the previous IndyCar races at Mid-Ohio, Dixon discounted the advantage of being on the pole. The prevailing opinion is that good qualifying runs mean a good finish because its so difficult to pass on the 2.4-mile track. "It will only take like a lap, and then its going to be mixed up again," said Dixon, a two-time IndyCar series champion who lives in Indianapolis, where he won the 500 in 2008. "You might find yourself in the middle of the pack when the pit sequence opens up. Well have to see how it goes. Its obviously a moving target all the time." He also will have history working against him. The pole-sitter has never won an IndyCar race at Mid-Ohio in the tracks four years on the circuit. Briscoes qualifying time was closer to fifth-place Hunter-Reay than to Dixon. But that didnt detract from how he felt about the course. "Its a beautiful race circuit here, one of those few pure race track circuits that we go to on the calendar," he said. "Its a permanent track that has a lot of history. Its a fun track to drive. You can be very aggressive, push the car to its limits. Its satisfying when you get a good lap out of it. Its good to be on the front row again." Franchitti said his team benefited from visiting the track just over a week earlier. "The test was definitely helpful for us. When its so restrictive now anytime you can get on the track it is helpful," he said. "If I had to have put a lap together I could have been second, but I was overdriving a bit, so I didnt get it together. I didnt do a perfect job but third is not bad. Well have a go at it tomorrow." Power comes into Mid-Ohio 38 points behind Franchitti in the standings. A year ago, he qualified on the pole at the track and clinched the series road-course championship -- despite losing a late duel with Franchitti to the checkered flag. "My last lap was good -- it could have been good enough for second," he said of qualifying. "I made a mistake in the last turn and lost a couple tenths (of a second). Still, I was quite a ways off Scott. He seemed to have a chunk on the field. Its going to be tough to beat him tomorrow." Adidas Zx Flux Soldes . TIM HARDAWAY, JR (Knicks): Picked 24th by New Yorks former GM, Glen Grunwald (honestly, what is owner James Dolan thinking firing him?) is a gem. Saw him on Friday night vs. the Raptors. I was very impressed with him. Hes got nice shooting mechanics and plays with great energy and awareness. Played for a terrific college coach at Michigan (John Beilein) who is one of the best in the business at teaching offensive fundamentals and obviously his dad, Tim, Sr. was a wonderful player. He really jumped out at me. Hell be playing for a winning team and will have to earn every minute he gets which is a good thing - it will make him a better pro in the long run. If first impressions matter he made a positive one, thats for sure. 2. GREG ODEN (Heat): Practiced for the first time 5-on-5 on Sunday and got through it okay. Fingers crossed hes able to practice/play consistently. Frustrating start to his NBA career with a rash of injuries. The positive is that the Heat need him in a secondary capacity and hell be brought along slowly and eased in. In addition, hell be held accountable by coach Erik Spoelstra, president Pat Riley and a team with good internal leadership - you had better be in shape, do your work and be professional or else. Its an environment that is conducive to a gradual step in the right direction for him if he can stay healthy. 3. NIKOLA PEKOVIC (Timberwolves): Man this guy is a beast. What a load to move in the lane. Felt bad for the Raptors big men watching them try to battle with him last week. When he gets to his spot on the floor - good luck moving him. Hes developed into a nice player and when you look around the league there will be nights that hell have his way in the lane with smaller/weaker bigs in the paint. He has no back down and is a relentless rebounder and improving offensive feature for coacch Rick Adelman.dddddddddddd 4. DEMAR DEROZAN (Raptors): I have been impressed with him and his approach from the start of Training Camp. Definitely stronger and seems to know what works for him and playing the game at an efficient pace. Ive always respected his mature approach. He loves the game and works at his craft diligently. Hes playing with a greater degree of toughness in the lane and attacking his opponent and working harder to draw fouls and get to the free throw line. Obviously, the Raptors have played only four preseason games so the sample size is very small but he is on the right track. Stay on it and keep improving. People talk a lot about his three-point shooting needing to improve. I totally agree. Lets be real though. Hell never be confused even at his best with Ray Allen. Hes a slasher with great explosiveness and increased strength whose biggest positive is getting to the rim. Play to your strengths - be who you are. 5. ANDREW WIGGINS (University of Kansas): Got my Sports Illustrated in the mailbox and see him on the cover. The hype is ratcheting up even further. What expectations and pressure on this young man. Happy that hes getting the PR and its an exciting time for the growth of Canadian basketball yet I always worry when too much is thrown at a young player. Thrilled for him yet the attention unnerves me. Most times it creates distractions that they cant live up to. Im hopeful that he has the emotional maturity/makeup to handle all of this. I wish he could ease into this a bit more. With the accelerated pace of development of players these days its hard for a player to experience the much needed growing pains that shape your character and improve you as a player. Easy does it is not the mode anymore and it can crush a guy. Based upon what Ive seen he looks like a guy that will get through it all just fine. cheap nfl jerseys cheap soccer jerseys ' ' '
