the defensive end...In a playoff series its kind

LOS ANGELES -- Paul Goldschmidt fought through an 11-pitch at-bat against Dodgers closer Brandon League and got a huge payoff at the end. Goldschmidt hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the ninth inning and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Dodgers 5-3 on Tuesday night, sending last-place Los Angeles to its sixth straight defeat. League (0-2) walked Gerardo Parra to open the ninth and struck out Didi Gregorius. Goldschmidt fouled off five full-count pitches before driving his seventh home run into the left-field pavilion. "When you get a chance to win the game, you want to come through for your team," Goldschmidt said. "Once we got to 3-2, he threw me five fastballs and I was just trying to fight them off. Hes got that really good slider and split-finger, so I was trying to make sure that in case he threw that to just step back a little bit." Three nights earlier, League gave up a game-ending homer by Guillermo Quiroz in a 10-9 loss to the Giants. "Top of the ninth, tie game at home is pretty much a save situation. Youve got to hold the game so you can walk em off in the bottom of the ninth," League said. "My plan was to get Goldschmidt to ground into a double play. Thats an example of what happens when you throw a (lousy) pitch. Mechanics are not the issue right now. Im not all over the strike zone. Im just not executing what I need to execute." David Hernandez (2-2) pitched a scoreless eighth for the win. Arizona closer J.J. Putz left with stiffness in his right elbow after issuing a leadoff walk in the ninth to Nick Punto, but Heath Bell got three outs for his second save after getting all the time he needed to warm up. "I think the last time that happened to me was in 2010, when I came in for Mike Adams after he felt something in his elbow," Bell said. "But tonight I had been warming up at that time to go in the game anyway if it was tied after nine. And as soon as I saw that something was going on, I got back up on the mound and started firing again." Putz will be re-evaluated on Wednesday. If he is sidelined for any amount of time, at least the Diamondbacks have a bona fide closer to fill in. Bell averaged 44 saves during a three-year stretch with San Diego, including a career-high 47 in 2010, and made the All-Star team in each of those seasons. "They brought me in to help out if J.J. needed a day off or if David needed a day off," Bell said. "I mean, you never want to see anybody hurt. But unfortunately, if he has to take some time on the DL, I think myself and David can fill in real nicely." Los Angeles starter Josh Beckett gave up three runs and nine hits in six innings with five strikeouts and two walks. The no-decision kept the three-time All-Star winless through his first seven starts of a season for the first time in his 13-year career. He is 0-4 with a 5.80 ERA. Punto, the Dodgers light-hitting utility man, homered and drove in the tying run with a seventh-inning double. Beckett was trailing 3-2 and heading for his 100th career loss when Punto got him off the hook with a drive to the alley in right-centre against Brandon McCarthy. It scored Skip Schumaker all the way from first base after his leadoff walk -- the only one allowed by McCarthy. The right-hander gave up three runs and eight hits over 6 1-3 innings and struck out three. Puntos second-inning homer, his first with the Dodgers, gave him as many through the first 32 games as slugger Matt Kemp, who hit a career-high 39 two years ago. Punto extended his home run streak to 12 consecutive seasons -- nine of which he has had only one. In 998 major league games he has homered 16 times in 2,818 regular-season at-bats, including a career-high four in 2005 with Minnesota. "Ive seen him do that before. Unfortunately for him, it hasnt happened too many times," said Arizona outfielder Jason Kubel, who played with Punto for seven seasons in Minnesota. "He hits balls hard in BP, so I know its there. He knows he can." The Diamondbacks scored a run in each of the first two innings, only to see the Dodgers respond with a run in the bottom half both times. Punto tied it 2-all, driving a 3-2 pitch into the lower seats in the right-field corner and snapping a home run drought of 157 at-bats since his previous one on June 2, 2012, against Torontos Carlos Villanueva. Beckett gave up a leadoff hit in each of the first five innings, including doubles by Parra in the first and Eric Chavez in the second. Parra scored on Goldschmidts groundout and Chavez came home on Kubels single. Arizona regained the lead in the fifth when Gregorius led off with a single, Goldschmidt walked and Chavez came through with an RBI single. NOTES: This was the first time in his big league career that Punto hit a home run before June. ... Utility man Jerry Hairston Jr., who sustained a groin injury Saturday in San Francisco, joined SS Hanley Ramirez, LHP Ted Lilly, RHP Chad Billingsley and RHP Zack Greinke on the Dodgers disabled list. The move is retroactive to May 6 because Hairston pinch-hit on Sunday. ... Los Angeles INF-OF Elian Herrera was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque. The versatile Herrera played six positions in his 67 games with the big club last season. ... Arizona 3B Martin Prado, 0 for 10 against Beckett, wasnt in the starting lineup for the second time in the teams first 32 games. He pinch-hit in the eighth and was intentionally walked. For the third straight night at Midway Stadium in St. Paul, the Winnipeg Goldeyes shut out the St. Paul Saints. This time, in the final game of a four-game series, Jarvis gave up only five hits as the Goldeyes beat the Saints 3-0 to win their third straight game in St. ORLANDO, Fla. -- In the first two games against the Orlando Magic, the Indiana Pacers struggled to make the most of their size and matchup advantages. After several days of repeated tongue lashings from coach Frank Vogel, the Pacers finally got the message and capitalized on both, running past the Magic 97-74 on Wednesday night to take a 2-1 lead in the first-round series. Danny Granger had 26 points and nine rebounds, Roy Hibbert added 18 points and 10 rebounds, and Indiana held Orlando under 80 points for the second straight game. The Pacers regained home-court advantage, riding good shooting early, building a 29-point lead in the fourth quarter and cruising to the victory. "I think were adjusting," Hibbert said. "We see what theyre doing. ... They made their run at the end of the first quarter. We adjusted, then we tried to lay it on them as much as possible." Indiana dominated scoring underneath thanks to a 46-33 rebounding edge and has outscored the Magic 81-43 in the third quarter in the series. "Terrific win by our club," Vogel said. "We understood the importance of winning on the road, and to be a great basketball team, and to go on a deep playoff run which is what we hoped to do starting this season." Vogel said the goal was to limit Orlandos 3-point attempts and thought that "holding that team to 15 3-point field goal (attempts) when they average 28 is a strong defensive effort." Glen Davis led the Magic with 22 points, and J.J. Redick added 13. The Magic never led, struggled to get any scoring in the paint, and made a series-low five 3-pointers. One of the biggest disappoints in the series continues to be the play of Ryan Anderson, who was held to seven points and one 3-pointer. He has scored 23 points total in the three games. "Im not going to lie, its frustrating as a group (and) in general to lose a game like this," he said. "But obviously we can bounce back and player harder next game. The great thing about this is we have another game, so keep playing." Vogel also implored the Pacers after each of the first two games to make better shot selections. They finally did that as well. It translated into their best shooting of the series as the Pacers built a 23-point lead in the third quarter and led 76-55 entering the fourth. Indiana had its way both inside and out, shooting 47 per cent for the game (37 for 79) and holding a 42-22 edge on points in thee paint.dddddddddddd Meanwhile, aside from Davis, Orlandos offence stalled at several points and the Magic connected on only 30 of their 71 attempts from the field. Indiana led 44-38 at the half, but started the game on an offensive tear hitting nine of its first 10 shots from the field and shot 52 per cent (18 for 34) for the half. The Magic had few answers for Hill, who scored 13 points in the opening two periods. Orlando survived the fast start, though, thanks largely to Davis 16-point second quarter. His scoring spree featured mid-range jumpers and some baskets in the post. It all came after Davis missed all three of his shots in the first quarter. The Pacers put the Magic in a 10-point first-quarter hole for the third straight game, jumping out to a 13-3 advantage. Orlando missed its first five shots before Hedo Turkoglu hit a 3-pointer to finally put the Magic on the board. Granger said he thinks the roots of the Pacers resurgence the past two games arent hard to find. "That (Game 1) loss really woke us up," he said. "It showed us what Orlando was capable of and we knew we had to really play in this series to win. We have just been executing especially on the defensive end...In a playoff series its kind of like a chess match." Game 4 is Saturday in Orlando, and Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said changes must be made during that time if theyre going to turn things around. "They clearly dominated us tonight, and thats three first quarters and three third quarters where its been the same story. So well take look at that and see if we want to make some changes or something. We cant be playing out of a hole all the time." As good as it feels to have the Magic backpedaling now, though, Pacers guard Paul George said no one is feeling like the series is over yet. "It gives us confidence, but at the same time we know this team is dangerous," he said. "We dont want to be happy about just being up 2-1, but just take it one game at a time. Basically, this could be a long series if we dont take care of business." And generate another talking to from their coach. Notes: Indiana outrebounded Orlando for the third consecutive game. ...
