BUENOS AIRES, Argentina -- Newly elected IOC President Thomas Bach made it clear Wednesday that he wants to change the bidding process for future Olympics and to make sustainable development a key priority. In what could be seen as a reference to discontent in Brazil at the spiraling cost of two major sporting competitions -- the 2016 Olympics and the 2014 World Cup -- Bach said he wants the populations of potential host cities to "be part of the candidature at a very early stage" to ensure "more participation and support." Bach added that he believes the current bidding system asks for "too much, too early" and leads to predictability, rather than creativity. "We approach potential candidate cities like you would do in business, with a tender for a franchise. All the bid books are written by the same people around the world -- you get the same answers," he said. "I would like to try and change that mentality a little bit, to think about bidding more as an invitation. I want to invite potential candidates to study how Olympic Games would fit into their long-term city and regional and country development... (and) could contribute to sustainable development in their environment." On Saturday, Tokyo was selected to host the 2020 Summer Olympics, fending off rival bids from Istanbul and Madrid. The Spanish capital was subject to criticism of misguided priorities, as the country grapples with a double dip recession and 27 per cent unemployment. The Japanese government faced similar concerns over the idea that it should focus on the Fukushima nuclear crisis, rather than spending billions of dollars on the Olympics. The 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, are expected to run up a budget of more than $50 billion -- the most expensive Games to date. Sebastian Coe, who led Londons 2012 Olympiad, spoke to AP about the challenges of hosting for any city. His main advice for Tokyo was to "get out of the blocks very quickly" in realizing its plans for 2020, and "be prepared to work harder than youve ever worked in your life on any single project." Zaire, a redshirt freshman making his first career start, was named the starting quarterback for the game on Monday in favor of Golson, who picked up a pair of first downs through the air on the final drive before Zaire converted a first down on the ground to set up the winning kick. The duo combined for 186 yards passing with Zaire tossing a touchdown to William Fuller. Zaire also rushed for 96 yards on a team-high 22 carries with a score for Notre Dame (8-5). Final Score: Stanford 45, Maryland 21 Santa Clara, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Stanford got to play at Levis Stadium. It just wasnt the trip to Santa Clara the Cardinal envisioned. Remound Wright ran for three touchdowns in the first half and the Cardinal routed Maryland 45-21 in the Foster Farms Bowl on Tuesday night. Stanford, which had made a BCS bowl in each of the previous four seasons, including consecutive Pac-12 titles, had hoped to play in the San Francisco 49ers new home for the conference title game on Dec. 5. An inconsistent 5-4 season in the league, however, prevented that. The Cardinal ripped off 35 straight points to seize control of the contest after it was tied 7-7 early in the second. Kevin Hogan completed 14-of-20 passes for 189 yards with both of his touchdowns going to Devon Cajuste, who caught four passes for 47 yards for Stanford (8-5), which won its last three games. Austin Hooper had five receptions for 71 yards, Wright carried the ball eight times for 49 yards and Christian McCaffrey added 57 yards on seven totes in the triumph. Stefon Diggs, who returned from a two-game absence due to a lacerated kidney, hauled in 10 passes for 138 yards for the Terrapins (7-6), who dropped their last three tilts. C.J. Brown was 15-of-27 for 205 yards with an interception in defeat. cheap jerseys wholesale jerseys from china ' ' '
