CHICAGO -- Right from the start, the Chicago Blackhawks knew they would be tested. Clearly, they were ready. Patrick Kane, Brent Seabrook and Viktor Stalberg scored to back Corey Crawford, and Chicago hung on to beat the St. Louis Blues 3-2 on Tuesday night. "There are a lot of positive things that you could look at our game right now and say were doing things well in certain areas," Jonathan Toews said. Theyre getting off to strong starts in games. Theyre off to a strong start, period, actually. The Blackhawks looked sharp in their home opener after impressive wins at defending champion Los Angeles and Phoenix, the team that knocked them out of the playoffs in the first round last season. This time, they took out the reigning Central division champions, another impressive win for a team that has its sights set high. "They were a lot of top opponents right out of the gate, but I like the focus of our team right off the bat, the contributions were getting from a lot of guys," coach Joel Quenneville said. "Its a positive start, were happy, but lets keep trying to get better." Kane scored in the first period, Seabrook deflected a shot into the net with his skate in the second and Stalberg came through early in the third to make it 3-0. Crawford made 32 saves and was in line for his first shutout since March 2011 when Andy McDonald beat him with a wrist shot shortly after Stalberg scored. T.J. Oshie pulled the Blues within one when he fired in a rebound of David Perons shot on a power play with 5:07 left. Brian Elliott made 24 saves, but the Blues took their first loss after beating Detroit and Nashville. "We were light with the puck, particularly in the offensive zone," coach Ken Hitchcock said. "It wasnt what we did in our zone, its what we did entering their zone and they transitioned quick. They caught us for odd-man rushes early." It was another good showing by the Blackhawks after they scored 11 goals in their first two games and sparked memories of the high-powered team that won the Stanley Cup in 2010. "We just have to remind ourselves every night that its about us preparing ourselves to play and worrying about our own game, our own locker room," Toews said. "If we do that, theres little things that we want to take note of when we play certain teams. Other than that, its just about us in this locker room. It doesnt matter who we play out there. Weve got to set that standard for how were going to play every single night." Thats something he felt slipped at times last season. They had a big lull, dropping nine in a row at one point, before regrouping to finish with the fifth-most points in the Western Conference (101). So far, though, they seem to be meeting their standards. Playing against the team that allowed the fewest goals in the league last season, they set the tempo in the early going and grabbed a 1-0 lead 7:20 in when Kane cut across the crease on a 3-on-0 rush. He took a feed from Patrick Sharp and beat Elliott with a backhand for his second goal of the season. "I dont know if Ive ever seen a 3-on-0 in our league," Quenneville said. The Blues came on late in the period, but Crawford made two great saves seconds apart when he stopped Alexander Steen and sprawled out to block Vladimir Tarasenko on the rebound. The Blackhawks caught a break early in the second when Steen fired at an empty net with Crawford out of position. The puck deflected off Chicago centre Marcus Krugers stick and fluttered into Keiths chest, preserving the lead for Chicago. The Blackhawks added to it midway through the period on a power play when Keith fired a low laser from the blue line through a screen. The puck deflected off Seabrooks skate and slipped between Elliotts pads, making it 2-0. Stalberg beat Elliott glove side just over two minutes into the third, with McDonald spoiling the shutout bid about 21/2 minutes after that. "We were mismanaging the puck (in the first period) and poor reads," Blues defenceman Kevin Shattenkirk said. "I think we just didnt play our game. We didnt play smart and we gave them too many odd-man rushes." Notes: Blackhawks F Daniel Carcillo missed his second straight game with a right knee injury, and D Steve Montador remains sidelined by a concussion he suffered last season. ... LOS ANGELES -- Getting Andre Ethier and Matt Kemp rolling early in the season has helped the Los Angeles Dodgers to the best start in the majors. And getting Ted Lilly back in the rotation can only make them better. Lilly pitched seven innings of two-hit ball in his season debut after coming off the disabled list, Kemp hit a pair of two-run homers and Ethier also went deep, leading the Dodgers to a 6-1 victory over the San Diego Padres on Saturday night. The Dodgers, who had to win 25 of their final 35 games last season just to finish three games above .500, are off to an 8-1 start -- their best since beginning their 1981 World Series championship season 9-1. "Ive been sitting and watching a lot of games, and its been a collective effort. So it was nice for me to come out here the first game back and get into what weve been doing the past eight games," Lilly said. "Hopefully I have 30 or more of them left this year." The only hits off Lilly were a first-inning RBI single by Jesus Guzman and a leadoff infield hit in the sixth by Chase Headley. "For the most part I was throwing strike one, getting them in swing mode early and then expanding the zone," Lilly said. "I felt like I could have stayed in there, but we had a couple of guys who could use some innings." Lilly, whose season was delayed because of neck stiffness, threw 79 pitches, struck out four and was charged with an unearned run. The 14-year veteran left-hander finished last season 12-14 with a 3.97 ERA after winning five of his final six starts. "Hes definitely important for us," Kemp said. "Hes a big part of our rotation and were going to need him for the rest of the year. As long as he stays healthy, I know hes going to go out there and battle for us. Hes a guy whos going to get the job done, and weve got faith in him." The first batter Lilly faced, Cameron Maybin, reached on a two-base throwing error by shortstop Dee Gordon and scored on a two-out single by Guzman. But the Dodgers responded with four runs in the bottom of the first and two more in the second against Joe Wieland in his major league debut. Kemp hit his first home run to centre field after a leadoff walk to Gordon. Ethier followed with a drive into the right-field pavilion, and Adam Kennedy capped the Dodgers opening salvo with a sacrifice fly. One inning later, Kemp hit his fifth homer of the season to right field after a single by Tony Gwynn Jr. Wieland was charged with six runs and six hits in five innings. The 22-year-old right-hander, born in Renno, Nev.dddddddddddd, came to the Padres at last years trade deadline along with fellow prospect Robbie Erlin in a deal that sent Mike Adams to the Texas Rangers. One day earlier, in his final start for Double-A Frisco, Wieland pitched a no-hitter against the Padres San Antonio affiliate. "This has been my dream my whole life, and its finally come true. Im so blessed," Wieland said. "But at the same time, its a little bittersweet. I would have liked to start out a little better, but I didnt locate my fastball early. First-time jitters definitely affected me in that first inning." Wieland eventually settled down, allowing no hits after Kemps second homer, and was grateful to manager Bud Black for letting him work out his difficulties. "It was very important," Wieland said. "I wanted to see how far I could go. I wanted to bounce back. I didnt want to end my night on something like that, and Bud letting me go back out there was big. I threw up a zero, then another one and another one, and it gave me confidence. I settled down and I started locating. That was the biggest difference between the third through fifth and the first two innings." Wieland made two starts this season for Triple-A Tucson before getting called up to fill in for right-hander Dustin Moseley, on the disabled list due to a right shoulder strain. Outfielder-first baseman Kyle Blanks was placed on the 15-day DL because of a troublesome left shoulder, opening up a spot for Wieland on the 25-man roster. The only walk Lilly allowed was to Nick Hundley, who was 0 for 2 and is hitless in his first 21 at-bats -- matching the worst season-opening drought of his five-year career. The longest by a Padres position player to start a season was Ozzie Smiths 0 for 32 dry spell in 1979. NOTES: The Dodgers announced that Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully is expected to return to the TV booth Sunday for his first home game of the season, after missing the first five games of the homestand because of a bad cold. Scully, in his 62nd year with the organization at age 84, was at the microphone for the season-opening, four-game series at San Diego. ... Nancy Bea Hefley threw a ceremonial first pitch for the first time since becoming the Dodger Stadium organist in 1988, the year the team won its last pennant and World Series title. Kemp was her catcher. ... Kemp has homered against seven pitchers on the Padres roster. It was the first time he and Ethier homered back-to-back since April 16, 2010, in the first inning against San Franciscos Todd Wellemeyer. cheap jerseys wholesale jerseys ' ' '
