The Ottawa RedBlacks, the CFLs newest team, signed its first four players in franchise history on Friday. General Manager Marcel Desjardins signed wide receiver Fred Rouse, defensive back Nick Turnbull, defensive end DiMetrio Tyson and defensive back Jerrell Gavins this week. Rouse started his college football career with Florida State in 2005 before completing it with Concordia-Selma in Alabama. Hes been on the Calgary Stampeders practice roster and played for the Omaha Nighthawks of the United Football League. Turnbull played college ball at Florida International and appeared in three NFL regular season games with the Atlanta Falcons and Chicago Bears. Tyson played at Jacksonville State and mostly recently played with the San Jose SaberCats of the Arena Football League (AFL). Gavins played for Boise State in college and the Tampa Bay Storm of the AFL. He had a tryout at Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie mini-camp earlier this year as well. "These players will have an opportunity to make our roster once we get onto the field for camp in the spring," said Desjardins. Canada, runner-up to Germany to stage the 2011 tournament, will host the 2015 Womens World Cup. Morace has just returned from Cyprus where Canada defeated the Netherlands 2-1 after extra time Wednesday to win the 12-team Cyprus Cup. Although Morace and the Canadian Soccer Association remain mum on the status of talks to secure her future, the latest success has given her plenty to be optimistic about when it comes to the team. "I think whats important is that we improve constantly," she said during a news conference where she was also joined by Minister of State for Sport Gary Lunn and Laureen Harper, wife of Prime Minister Stephen Harper. "This last tournament, for example, I wasnt so confident because I knew we werent in the best shape," said Morace, explaining the teams training program is designed to have players peak for Germany. "But the reaction of the team was fantastic. They have a lot of personality and when we met some difficulties, the team would react." Last month, Morace threatened to step down following the World Cup over frustrations with the Canadian Soccer Association and, in a show of support, players threatened to boycott future games. They agreed to participate in the Cyprus Cup after CSA officials met with Morace ahead of that tournament. Neither the CSA, which was represented at Fridays event by president Dominique Maestracci, nor Morace would comment on her situation. By 2015, the tournament will expand to 24 teams and so far, seven Canadian cities have put forth their interest in playing host to games: Ottawa, Montreal, Halifax, Moncton, Winnipeg, Edmonton and Vancouver. The CSA said Friday that they dont have a set number for host cities and cities absent from the initial list of potential hosts such as Toronto and Calgary still have time to get involved. FIFA is expected to return to Canada later in the year to begin reviewing plans and a decision on host cities could come as early as the end of 2011. Morace said the event, which will be preceded by the Womens Under-20 World Cup in 2014 with Canada as host, will boost the games profile, whether shes a part of it here or not.
