CALGARY -- For the second time in five days, Sean Monahan scored the game-deciding goal in a shootout to lead the Calgary Flames to victory. After scoring in the eighth round on Monday to earn Calgary a 5-4 shootout win on the road over the Winnipeg Jets, Monahan duplicated that feat in the sixth round on Friday at home as the Flames edged the Florida Panthers 4-3. "Weve got to dig deep," said Monahan, who has eight goals and six assists in 23 games so far in his rookie season with the Flames. "Were trying to do whatever we can to get points right now. It feels good. We want wins. I guess putting those in helped the team get some wins." Monahan snapped a hard shot just inside the far post over the right pad of Florida goalie Tim Thomas to earn Calgary the win. "Just kind of outwaiting the goalie and shooting hard," said Monahan of the key to his success in the shootout. "Its something I tried to do and it worked." Joe Colborne had a goal and an assist in regulation for his first multiple-point game with the Flames (8-11-4) since being acquired from the Toronto Maple Leafs in the off-season for a fourth round pick in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. "Its nice just to get a few wins in here and lighten the mood a bit," said Colborne, who also scored on Wednesday during Calgarys 2-1 overtime loss at home to the Columbus Blue Jackets. "We have obviously a very proud group in here. Its nice to have some music going in the dressing room and some guys who are smiling again. Its just a big team win." Sven Baertschi and Blair Jones also scored for the Flames, who have now collected points in three straight games going 2-0-1 in that span. Playing in his sixth straight game in net for the Flames, Reto Berra stopped 23 shots to improve his record to 3-4-2 in his first NHL season. Berra also stopped Florida forward Nick Bjugstad in the sixth round of the shootout to preserve the victory after Monahan scored. Tom Gilbert, Jimmy Hayes and Marcel Goc scored for the Panthers (6-13-5), who finished up their five-game road trip with a 2-2-1 record. "Ive got to be real proud of the way the guys reacted," said Florida coach Peter Horachek. "Good road trip. From that standpoint, going .500 and all tough games, I think thats really positive." Thomas, who played in his eighth straight game for the Panthers, finished with 21 saves. "We showed a lot of character and a lot of good things, which weve done in the past and we did it again," said Thomas, who was hoping to outduel Berra in the shootout after the Panthers rallied from a 3-1 deficit with two goals in the third period. "When I see the team responding and stepping up like that I want them to get the two points." Neither team mustered a shot on net until 5:41 of the first period when Thomas easily stopped and smothered a point blast off the stick of Calgary defenceman Chris Butler. The Panthers took a 1-0 lead at 15:14 of the first on Gilberts first goal of the season. Bjugstad won the faceoff back to Gilbert, who let go a shot from the point through traffic that fooled Berra and found the back of the net. At the nine-minute mark of the second period, Colborne scored his third of the season to pull the Flames even. Lance Bouma did a good job of forechecking to force Florida defenceman Mike Mottau to turn the puck over. The puck bounced off of Calgary forward David Jones right to Colborne, who wired a perfect shot from the slot into the top corner over the outstretched glove of Thomas. "It was more of a reaction," Colborne said. "When you get a puck in that area, you dont have much time and I just got it on my stick and tried to get it in the top corner." Baertschi then broke out of a 15-game goal-less drought when he scored a power-play goal at 12:04 of the second to put the Flames up 2-1. Thomas gave up a big rebound of a point shot by T.J. Brodie that was tipped by Colborne and the puck bounced right to Baertschi, who swatted it into the back of the net. Jones gave Calgary a 3-1 lead at 5:40 of the third when he converted a feed from Bouma for his first goal in his first game of the season with the Flames. Just 82 seconds later, Hayes took advantage of a turnover by Berra to score his first of the season to pull the Panthers within a goal. Berra ventured out of his net in an attempt to poke check the puck away from Florida forward Shawn Matthias, but it went right to Hayes, who shot it into a wide-open net. Goc scored at 14:01 of the third to force overtime when he outwaited Berra before snapping a shot that snuck under the Calgary goalies left arm and into the net. "They seem to respond every time," Horachek said. "We wanted to come back out in the third and do what we have to do and they scored and (we) didnt drop their heads." Notes: Prior to being recalled from the AHL on Thursday, Blair Jones put up eight goals and 13 assists for a team-leading 21 points in 16 games with the Abbotsford Heat. a T.J. "Four now," Carl Gunnarsson told the Leaf Report proudly following a 5-2 victory over New York on Tuesday night, the clubs fifth straight at home.MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- Cam Newton angrily slapped his hands together and stared into the end-zone stands, watching Miami Dolphins fans celebrate the interception he had just thrown. His mistake helped put the Carolina Panthers in a deep hole Sunday, but Newton knew how to get out. He led a late comeback for the second time in a week, converting a fourth-and-10 situation at his 20 with a completion to keep alive the Panthers final possession, and their touchdown with 43 seconds left beat Miami 20-16. The Panthers (8-3) overcame a 16-3 first-half deficit for their seventh win in a row, their longest streak since 2003. "It may not be pretty," Newton said, "but at the end of the game we get that three-letter word, and thats gorgeous." Newton hit Greg Olsen with a 1-yard pass for the winning score to cap a 12-play drive. Carolina also rallied past the New England Patriots with a late drive last Monday. The Dolphins (5-6) fell to 2-2 since tackle Jonathan Martin left the team and the teams bullying scandal began to mushroom. "Weve got to make plays at the end when it counts," receiver Mike Wallace said. "Weve got to have a killer instinct. I dont think we have it that well right now. Weve got to do a better job of putting teams away." The Panthers trailed 16-13 when their winning drive began at their own 20 with 4:13 left. With only one timeout remaining, they went for it on fourth down, and Newton threaded a pass between two defenders to Steve Smith for a 19-yard gain. A backbreaker for Miami? "Im not sure theres any other word to describe that," defensive lineman Jared Odrick said. "Thats when the tide shifted in our favour," Newton said. Carolina then converted two third downs before Newton hit Olsen for the winning score. Ryan Tannehill nearly connected with Wallace for a 60-yard score in the final seconds, but the pass fell incomplete at the goal line. "Thats a tough play," Tannehill said. "Youre basically a hope and a prayer and get it out there." "A little scary," Carolina coach Ron Rivera said. Tannehill and Wallace earlier teamed up for a 53-yard touchdown and a 57-yard completion to set up a field goal. Newtons interception led to another field goal by Miami. He was erratic at the outset, perhaps partly because he bit his tongue when hit on the first series, and he finished with a quarterback rating of only 60.6. But Newton was at his beest with time running out.dddddddddddd Following the Panthers uncharacteristically slow start, he led them 52 yards for a field goal in the final 61 seconds of the first half with no timeouts left, taking advantage of Miamis soft coverage to cut the deficit to 16-6. Riveras willingness to take chances paid off in the third quarter. From the Panthers 41, Newton ran for 8 yards to convert a fourth-and-1, and they went on to complete an 83-yard touchdown drive to make the score 16-13. "They have been calling our coach Riverboat Ron because he likes to gamble," Newton said. Newton scored on a 5-yard keeper in the third quarter and celebrated with a dance tribute to LeBron James, mindful he was in the Miami Heat stars area code. "Three-oh-five is where he reigns supreme with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh," Newton said. "Im big fans of those guys." For the second game in a row, the Panthers Luke Kuechly made a big play in the end zone that was disputed. He appeared to make helmet-to-helmet contact when he broke up a potential touchdown catch by Rishard Matthews, and an official threw a flag, but the referee determined there was no penalty and Miami settled for a field goal and a 16-3 lead. Kuechly bear-hugged the Patriots Rob Gronkowski on the final play of the Panthers victory at New England last Monday. While Tannehill threw for 280 yards, he was also sacked three times to increase his season total to 44, a franchise record. Carolina held Miamis running backs to 16 yards in 13 carries and shut out the Dolphins over the final 31 minutes. "We were lazy in the first half," Carolinas Smith said. "We underestimated that team." The Dolphins fell to 4-4 in games decided by four points or less. "We were a couple of plays away from winning," Tannehill said. "Weve got to be able to make those plays. Its tough to win three-point games every week. When the defence is playing well like that, weve got to be able to score more points." NOTES: Miami RB Daniel Thomas left the game in the third quarter with a left ankle injury. ... The Panthers had been 0-4 previously against Miami. ... Ted Ginn Jr. dropped a potential 50-yard catch playing in Miami for the first time since he left the Dolphins as a first-round bust following the 2009 season. ...
