SAN JOSE, Calif. -- With San Joses stars struggling to score goals of late, the Sharks needed to get some production from some of their lower-profile players. Tommy Wingels scored with 3:08 remaining in overtime to lead the Sharks to their second win in six games, 2-1 over the Dallas Stars on Wednesday night. "Im a big part of the group that the scorings kind of vanished from," Wingels said. "I got one tonight, but the numbers in the past games still arent where they need to be. Its something were working on, the group of guys that need to pick it up. We will. Were confident players and well get there." Marty Havlat scored in regulation and set up the game-winner in overtime to give the struggling Sharks a much-needed boost with just one game left before the Olympic break. Wingels had scored just one goal in the previous 23 games, while Havlat had one in the past 13 as the Sharks were held to 11 goals in the past seven games. "It was time for some others to step up and score," coach Todd McLellan said. "To see Marty and Tommy both do it in one game is a good thing for our team." Backup goalie Alex Stalock made 19 saves to improve to 8-3-0 with a 1.61 goals against average in 11 starts. Valeri Nichushkin tied the game early in the third for the Stars, who came up short in their attempt to sweep a three-game road trip and move into playoff position in the Western Conference. Dallas trails Vancouver by two points in the race for the final playoff spot. Kari Lehtonen made 19 saves. The Stars have closed ground on the Canucks by winning five of their previous seven games, allowing nine goals and posting three shutouts in that span. They were at their best defensively in the third period when they held the Sharks to two shots, including none in the first 14-plus minutes but ended up on the short side in overtime. "We were lucky to get a point out of it," centre Vernon Fiddler said. "It would have been nice to get two, but they made a play and we didnt." Havlat made a neat backhand pass from the side of the net to Wingels, who knocked it in for his 11th goal and first career overtime goal. The Stars have now lost six of seven games decided in overtime this season. "Its an area we have to improve in," coach Lindy Ruff said. "Thats not good enough. We lost coverage on the goal and they made us pay for it." The Stars tied the game early in the third as they capitalized on some sustained pressure in the offensive zone. Trevor Daley fed the puck to Nichushkin, who was all alone in the slot for a one-timer that beat Stalock. The Sharks had taken the lead late in the second period when Havlat deftly redirected a point shot from Scott Hannan past Lehtonen for his fourth goal this season. McLellan looked for a spark for his struggling team, which had scored just five goals in the previous five games. He moved Patrick Marleau to a line with Joe Thornton and Brent Burns, while using Joe Pavelski as the centre between Wingels and Matt Nieto. It failed to pay early dividends as the Sharks were held scoreless in the first period for the seventh time in the past eight games. Stalock made sure they didnt end the period with a deficit when he made a scintillating glove save to rob Jamie Benn late in the period. "It was kind of a desperation save where I had to make a big save," Stalock said. "Those are saves it would be nice to maybe look a little simpler. Its something to work on." NOTES: McLellan tied Darryl Sutter for most games coached in franchise history with 434. ... Hannan had two assists for his first two-point game since Nov. 19, 2010, for Colorado against the Rangers. ... The Stars fell to 3-4-0 on the second night of back-to-back games. ... Nieto did not return after blocking a shot by Trevor Dale8y in the closing seconds of the second period. ... F Adam Burish returned from a back injury to play for the first time this season for the Sharks. Green Bay, WI - Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers will again watch from the sideline on Sunday when his teammates take on the Pittsburgh Steelers. Packers coach Mike McCarthy said Rodgers was limited in practice Friday and has not yet been medically cleared to play as the former MVP continues his recovery from a fractured collarbone. Matt Flynn will again get the start Sunday with Rodgers set to miss a seventh straight game. "I thought Aaron Rodgers did everything he possibly could, but this is an organizational decision," said McCarthy on Friday. "As an organization we are not ready for him to play. Im not going to get into ifs and buts and who made what decision. Matt Flynn is the starter and were excited to play the Pittsburgh Steelers." Rodgers has been practicing in earnest each of the last two weeks. He had hoped to play last Sunday against Dallas, but remained sidelined and watched as Flynn rallied the Packers to a 37-36 victory that kept Green Bays playoff hopes very much alive. The Packers now control their own postseason destiny, as wins over the Steelers and Chicago Bears over the final two weeks would give Green Bay the NFC North title. Flynn has led Green Bay to back-to-back victories, both one-point decisions. The Packers held on for a 22-21 win over Atlanta in Week 14 before last weeks 23-point rally against the Cowboys. Over those two starts, he has completed 50-of-71 passes for 557 yards and five touchdowns with two interceptions. Rodgers has not played since sustaining his injury on the opening drive of Green Bays eventual 27-20 loss to rival Chicago on Nov. 4. The Packers proceeded to go 0-3-1 over the next four weeks with their star signal-caller on the shelf, before to turning things around the past two games. Packers running back Eddie Lacy was also limited in practice and listed as probable as he battles an ankle issue. Defensive tackle Johnny Jolly wont play because of a shoulder/neck injury. DETROIT -- The Nashville Predators scored only two goals on Tuesday night. But it was enough for a win because the slumping Detroit Red Wings couldnt get a puck past rookie Marek Mazanec. Mazanec made 27 saves to earn his first shutout, helping Nashville extend the Wings skid to seven games with a 2-0 victory. "Hes catching up to the level," Predators coach Barry Trotz said. "Hes confident after seeing some of the best players in the world. When you start facing those guys on a regular basis, youre going to feel a little bit more confident if you have success." Shea Weber and Gabriel Bourque scored for Nashville, which has won two straight after losing four in a row. "Weve got to keep an even keel," Trotz said. The Red Wings are saying the same thing. Detroits home slide reached eight games (0-6-2), the franchises longest stretch without a win at Joe Louis Arena since Jan. 12-30 1991, according to STATS. "Its just a frustrating time for us right now," Jimmy Howard said after making 23 saves for the Red Wings. "It just doesnt seem like anythings going our way out there." Home -- or away. The Red Wings have gone seven games without a win overall (0-5-2) for the first time since the last seven games of the 2001-02 regular season, according to STATS. That team went on to hoist the Stanley Cup. This one, though, appears to have a lot of heavy lifting ahead of it to contend for a championship. "When youve lost that many in a row, it gets in your head," Trotz said. "They havent really lost that many games." In regulation, thats a fact. Detroit entered the game with an Eastern Conference-low five losses in regulation, but has lost all four of its shootouts and seven of eight games decided in overtime. "Theres no excuses -- whatsoever," Red Wings defenceman Niklas Kronwall said. "Our job is to win games and we havent been winning. Sure, weve been taking points here and there, but its about getting two points and we have to get back to that as soon as possible." Weber gave the Predators a 1-0 lead on a power-play goal with 4.8 seconds left in the second period. The Red Wings failed to clear the puck out of their end and Weber took advantage. Weber kept the puck in Detroits end along the boards, passed it to David Legwand, who set him up perfectly for a slap shot just inside the blue line in the middle of the ice. "That was a huge goal," Trotz said. "Were in Detroit and theyve got guys like (Pavel) Datsyuk and (Henrik) Zetterberg, theyre dangerous." Bourque gave Nashville a two-goal lead at 7:13 of the third period, scoring on a rebound that caromed off the boards behind Howard. The Red Wings lost their previous three games in shootouts and the two before those setbacks in overtime, but didnt come close to pushing the Predators past regulation. "They didnt have a lot of good opportunities," Mazanec said. "Our defence played great." Detroits defence lost a key player early in the game. Red Wings rookie Danny DeKeyser injured his left shoulder after getting checked into the boards on his second shift and didnt return. DeKeyser entered the game with two goals and ranked among rookie leaders with seven assists. "Hes definitely not playing this week," Detroit coach Mike Babcock said. NOTES: Former Red Wings defenceman Chris Chelios was honoured before the game for being inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. ... NHL and Red Wings executives announced before the game that the 2014 Winter Classic is sold out. The Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs are expected play in front of 107,000-plus people on New Years Day at Michigan Stadium. In the same football stadium, Michigan and Michigan State set a hockey attendance mark of 104,173 in 2010. ... "I told him at shootaround that hes human," Cheeks said. "Hes entitled to have a bad game. Its important to see how you bounce back." Drummond had 13 points and 17 rebounds, and the Pistons snapped a four-game losing streak with a 103-87 win over the Orlando Magic on Tuesday night. Drummond bounced back from a poor outing at Dallas over the weekend, and Detroit led comfortably throughout the second half. Detroit has struggled to close out games at home this season, but this time the Pistons turned a double-digit lead into a rout. "We needed it a lot. Were losing, a lot of bad things are around in the air -- a lot of negative energy," Detroit guard Will Bynum said. "Just happy to get a win." Brandon Jennings had 20 points and eight assists for Detroit, and Josh Smith added 16 points. Victor Oladipo scored 19 points for the Magic. Detroit finished with 17 offensive rebounds -- 12 in the first half -- and outscored Orlando 44-22 in the paint. The Magic started former Piston Jason Maxiell for this game, giving themselves a little more size against Detroits imposing front line. It was no use. Drummond, Smith and Greg Monroe went a combined 17 for 30 from the field. Monroe finished with eight points and 11 rebounds. "Sometimes it is just as simple as finding someone ... and boxing them out," Magic coach Jacque Vaughn said. "You need to do that on 10 defensive possessions out of 10, not six out of 10 or nine out of 10, and we werent even close to that, especially in the first half. When a shot goes up, find someone and get a body on them." Drummond had only four points against Dallas, and he had a scary start in this one. He stayed down for a bit holding his left leg with 6:34 left in the first quarter -- after his shoe came off during a scramble near the basket. Drummondd was able to walk off the court, and he was back in the game almost immediately.dddddddddddd His putback gave Detroit a 12-11 lead. Maxiell missed a dunk at the other end, and although the Magic led by two after the first quarter, Detroit controlled the second to take a 53-43 halftime lead. Drummond said Cheeks pregame message helped him. "Last game was a tough game for me," Drummond said. "He knows I really get down on myself if I do anything wrong. For him to tel

Returning to the city in which he played his university hockey, the coach of Team Canadas 2014 Olympic team made it clear that reliability, dependability and trust would be the most important on-ice factors for those selected for Sochi. Appearing on TSN 690 Monday afternoon, Mike Babcock said he had conversations with both P.K. Subban and Carey Price about those on-ice traits during Hockey Canadas summer orientation camp. In that critical sequence, the top-ranked Wildcats held Stanford scoreless and helped preserve their perfect start to the season. This confident, unbeaten group believes it should be doing that all game long. For Arizona, three straight defensive stops is called a "kill." Nick Johnson kept Arizonas unblemished record going for another game, hitting a go-ahead 3-pointer with 51 seconds remaining and two free throws with 5.8 seconds left as Arizona survived for a 60-57 victory Wednesday night for its school-record 21st straight win. "Were an outstanding defensive team. It isnt as if we changed any scheme, we just buckled down and had a lot of players playing very hard, and our ability to hold them to what we did is a big reason we won. Our defence won the game tonight," Arizona coach Sean Miller said. "No question we have to execute better on offence and we have to be more confident at the line." After Johnson hit a jumper in the middle of the key with 2:36 remaining to make it 55-53, Dwight Powell answered on a baseline drive with 1:21 to go before Johnson delivered once more. Johnson finished with 16 points, five rebounds and four assists and T.J. McConnell added 11 points, eight rebounds and four assists for Arizona (21-0, 8-0 Pac-12), off to the programs best start in conference play in more than a decade. Arizona is one of three unbeaten teams left in Division I, joining No. 2 Syracuse, which also won Wednesday night. Fourth-ranked Wichita State hasnt lost either. Powell and Josh Huestis each scored 13 points for Stanford (13-7, 4-4), which outshot Arizona 38 per cent to 36 per cent. "For 38 minutes, I thought we were right there," Stanford coach Johnny Dawkins said. "Credit Arizona for making the plays they had to make at the end. Nick Johnson stepping up, whether at the foul line or whether it was a 3-point bucket late. Ive watched a lot of tape of them, hes done it all year." Johnson missed a free throw with 228 seconds left and Stanford called timeout.dddddddddddd Huestis missed a 3 from the left wing and Aaron Gordon secured the rebound, but he also missed a free throw giving the Cardinal one final shot. Chasson Randle missed a long 3 just before the final buzzer for Stanford. After a 3-pointer by Huestis with 10:03 remaining, Stanford didnt score again until Powells layin at 1:21 -- and Powell missed two free throws at 4:36 that would have put his team ahead. "Thats what we should have done the whole game. We came out a little lackadaisical and after that we turned it up when the sense of urgency turned up, and after that we kind of locked down," Gordon said. "It was good to come on the road and get a win, regardless of whether we won by 20 or we won by three like we did." Arizona, ranked No. 1 for a school-record eighth consecutive week, overcame a slow start on the way to an eighth straight win against Stanford. The Cardinal beat two Top 25 teams already with victories at then-No. 10 Connecticut and at then-No. 17 Oregon earlier this month. But not this time given their struggles in the waning moments at Maples Pavilion, which hosted a No. 1 mens team for the first time since losing 72-69 to Arizona on March 1, 2003. The Wildcats had a large contingent of fans in the crowd cheering "U of A! U of A!" Anthony Brown beat the halftime buzzer with a basket to put Stanford ahead 31-30. Arizona had trailed at halftime several times already this season only to produce a big second half. Arizona is on such a roll the players expect to win, even when they might not be at their best in a hostile environment. "One of the things we need to do is play defence at a high level more consistently and I think that will help us out a lot," forward Brandon Ashley said. "When we were down, we werent thinking about being down. For any team to be competitive, at any level, you have to be confident in yourself." Stanfords last home win against a No. 1 team came against Arizona, 82-74, on Feb. 4, 1988. MONTREAL -- It looks like the Montreal Impact have chosen the hard road to the Major League Soccer playoffs. Jose Goncalves scored the only goal in the 31st minute as the New England Revolution downed the listless Impact 1-0 on Saturday afternoon, extending Montreals winless run to five games. The Impact (13-11-7), who were on top of the league in June with a 9-3-2 record, began the day in a playoff position in fourth place, but the race got tighter after losing a third home game in a row. They have three games remaining in the regular season, including a match Wednesday night in Los Angeles and a must-win game at home next Saturday against Philadelphia. A victory against the Revolution would have greatly strengthened the Impacts hopes of reaching the post-season in only their second year in MLS, but they came out flat. New England (12-11-9) had the lions share of scoring chances and allowed Montreal few opportunities. "I think were all a little bit shocked," said Montreal captain Davy Arnaud. "Considering how big the game was, something was missing. "We werent ourselves. We just didnt have our normal urgency going forward to get chances. We lost some duels we normally win at home. I cant put my finger on it." Montreal will play in Los Angeles without Arnaud or defender Matteo Ferrari, who each will serve one-game suspensions for picking up their fifth yellow card. Coach Marco Schallibaum and the players spoke all week of the importance of beating New England, but they werent in the game from the opening kick-off. "We werent good today," said Schallibaum, whose team has one of a possible 15 points from its last five matches. "We didnt get much penetration in the box. "It was more in the head than in the legs. Now we have to pick ourselves up and get ready for the next game." Arnaud was at the centre of a grim moment in the 19th minute when New England forward Sene Sene was wheeled off the field on a stretcher and taken to hospital with what the Revolution later said was a dislocated left ankle and broken left fibula. The less than sellout crowd of 18,917 went silent when Sene went down after going for a ball in the Montreal penalty area. His foot got caught between Arnauds legs and appeared to snap. It was pointing the wrong way as he lay on the pitch in agony. "I feel really bad about what happened," said Arnaud. "It looks like its a really bad injury. "I think it was a good tackle. I won the ball clean, but his foot might have got caught underneath me. You never want to see that happen. I still feel bad about it. I hope hes OK." No foul was called as Arnaud got to the ball first. "You run into situations on the field that are bigger than the game," said Revolution coach Jay Heaps. "Everyones heart went out to him. "Its devastating for both teams. But the response from our guys -- you just felt there would be a moment when our guys had a chance to make a play. We got that goal almost 10 minutes after that incident, so I was really happy with that." Juan Agudelo just missed heading in a free kick, but New England got the ball back for Diego Fagundez to slip it across the area for Goncalves to score his second of the season. The New England defence did the rest as they clogged up the middle of the field and allowed league scoring leader Marco Di Vaio and his Impact teammates few looks at goal. The win stretched the Revolutions unbeaten string to four games and kept their playoff hopes alive. "It was crucial," said Heaps. "We knew these three (points) were the most important because they were pulling away. "Now its anyones ball game here for the last two (playoff) spots. Thats all you can ask for." The Impact got some life after bringing in three substitutes early in the second half but New England still got the best chance on a Chris Tierney free kick that went off the crossbar. The Impact have a handful of players playing through minor injuries, including Di Vaio, Patrice Bernier and Justin Mapp. But Arnaud dismissed the notion that the Impact, an older than average team, is wearing down at the end of the season. He feels they just need a spark to feel young again. "You need a positive result to get you back on track," he said. "When youre so close and you feel youre almost there in the post-season and things arent going well, you just need a bounce, something to go your way. "Maybe scrape out a win you dont deserve. Something that can turn things around." Notes: Alessandro Nesta returned to Montreals lineup after missing two games with a groin injury and Hernan Bernardello was back after sitting out five contests with a sprained ankle. Sanna Nyassi moved into the starting 11 in place of Felipe Martins. Maxim Tissot replaced injured fullback Jeb Brovsky. Warren Sapp Buccaneers Jersey . The Earthquakes second victory in 15 road games this season moved them within three points of a playoff spot with four games remaining in the Major League Soccer regular season. "It was a big win for sure," San Jose coach Mark Watson said. "We knew we maybe had to be perfect, and win the rest of our games. I thought the effort and the commitment the players put in was fantastic." Real Salt Lake, which had won this seasons previous two meetings by shutout, got a goal from Javier Morales in the 19th minute. It was his eighth of the season and came during a flurry of scoring on an otherwise quiet night at the goal. Real Salt Lake remained tied for second place behind Seattle in the chase for the Supporters Shield, awarded to top team in the regular season. Still, it missed an opportunity to capitalize on a struggling Earthquakes team that won the Shield a season ago. Lenhart began the goal spurt when he headed in a cross from Cordell Cato in the 18th minute. After Morales equalizer, Lenhart beat goalkeeper Nick Rimanndo with another header, this time off a free kick from Shea Salinas.dddddddddddd "I think he heads the ball harder than I shoot it," Salinas said of Lenhart, who recorded the sixth career multi-goal game of his career. "Its pretty impressive." Lenhart entered the night with two goals in 17 games and hadnt scored since July 27 against Portland. The forward followed each goal with an animated celebration that included a leap into the air and fist pump toward a section of the announced crowd of 20,504 - the fourth-largest in Rio Tinto Stadium history. Lenhart left to a chorus of boos when he was replaced at the beginning of stoppage time. San Jose, which ranks 16th in the league in scoring, tallied more than one goal for just the second time in seven games. Morales goal came on a corner kick from Kyle Beckerman. Salt Lake, which played without injured leading scorer Javier Morales (calf), had its three-game home winning streak snapped. Salt Lake tested the Earthquakes defence in the second half, but repeatedly failed to connect on crossing passes into the goal box. Robbie Findley and Chris Wingert each narrowly missed on shots that went wide left in the final 20 minutes. After months of lengthy debate from hockey fans across the country, Canadiens defenceman P.K. Subbans status for Sochi is no longer up in the air. Hes officially a member of the 2014 Canadian mens Olympic hockey team - and no one is happier than Montreals No. 76. "Obviously I was very happy (to receive the phone call) and my family was as well," he told reporters after Tuesdays announcement. Subban, 24, captured the Norris Trophy last season as the NHLs best defenceman after posting 11 goals and 27 assists in 42 games during the lockout-shortened campaign. But the Habs top blueliner has maintained that he wouldnt stand still as he tried to make a lasting impression with Hockey Canada. "I try not to be complacent, get better every day and do my job to help my team win," said Subban. "Im just grateful to have the opportunity to play with the best players in the world, play against them and learn from them." The Toronto native has a solid international resume, having captured back-to-back gold medals at the 2008 and 2009 World Junior Championship, including a berth in the tournament All-Star Team in his second stint with three goals and nine points. Hes also no stranger to playing on the larger ice surface that will be utilized in Sochi. "I played on an Olympic-sized rink in junior for four years with Belleville," he explained. "It changes the game a little bit in terms of how much space and time you have out there." And Subban has shown no signs of slowing down from last years career campaign, leading the Canadiens in scoring with seven goals and 26 assists in 44 games this season. "His greatest strengths are his shot and his puck handling," said Steve Yzerman, executive director of Team Canada. "Hes the right fit for that spot right now." That assessment was echoed by Canadiens head coach Michel Therrien, whos been pleased with the improvements Subban made to earn the selection. "He made progress over the last two years," he said Tuesday. "We wanted to make sure he was a good all-around player and he puts in effort. All the credit goes to him." Subban is one of four players named to Team Canada that is currently playing for a Canadian NHL team, joining teammate Carey Price as well as Dan Hamhuis and Roberto Luongo of the Vancouver Canucks. And the young blueliner is looking forward to sharing the Olympic experience with Price - a long-time friend on and off the ice. "Myself and Carey, weve had the opportunity to play together for a couple years now and to represent our country is great," said Subban. "I hope I get to room with him so I can snore and keep him up all night." Another teammate Subban plans to chat with is defenceman Andrei Markov, who was named to the Russias team at the same time. Provided of course, he can get Markov to respond. "Hes not talking very much right now, maybe hes already in Olympic mode," joked Subban. "Ive spoken to him many times about Sochi and he thinks its going to be a great experience. Ill definitely pick his brain on a couple things." Cheap Tampa Bay Buccaneers Jerseys . ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates -- Nigeria beat Mexico 3-0 in the Under-17 World Cup final on Friday to win the tournament for a record fourth time. Nigeria went ahead in the ninth minute through Erick Aguirres own goal before Kelechi Iheanacho doubled the lead in the 56th. Nigeria captain Musa Muhammed scored from a free kick in the 81st minute to complete the victory as the country surpassed Brazils three titles at the U17 level. In what was a rematch of Nigerias 6-1 win in the opening Group F match, Mexico had the better chances early. Alejandro Diazs close-range effort was just wide of the target and minutes later Nigeria goalkeeper Dele Alampasu tipped Ivan Ochoas header over the bar. However, Nigeria then went on a counterattack and Musa Yahahas shot deflected off Aguirre and past Mexico goalkeeper Raul Gudino. The remainder of the opening half was played at a frenetic pace and saw both sides squander opportunities. Alampasu made another good save in the 30th minute from Ulises Jaimes header after a lovely ball from Mexico captain Ulises Rivas. For Nigeria, Awoniyis strike hit the side of the net in the 37th minute, while Yahahas long-range effort struck the crossbar just before halftime. Both teams threatened in the opening stages of the second half, and Nigeria doubled its lead when Iheanacho took advantage of Gudinos poor attempt to clear the ball. Mexico continued to attack and could have scored when Aguirre found Ochoa in space. But his header from right in front of goal was wide of the target. The West Africans sealed the victory when Muhammed curled a free kick from the edge of the penalty box over the wall and past the outstretched arms of Gudino in the 81st minute. Earlier, Sweden clinched third place after beating Argentina 4-1, thanks to Valmir Berishas hat trick. Carlos Strandberg also scored for Sweden, while Lucio Campagnucci found the net for Argentina. "Theres a lot of feelings right now, Sweden coach Roland Larsson said. "This is my last game with this team, so this is the perfect present for me. "This is a sensation for Swedish football; no one would believe we could do this." Seven of the Canadian players for Wednesdays match against South Korea in Edmonton were on the Canadian team that ignited the womens soccer program in 2002 when it finished second to the U.S. in the U19 world championship at Commonwealth Stadium. Those seven -- captain Christine Sinclair, keeper Erin McLeod, centrebacks Carmelina Moscato and Rhian Wilkinson, midfielders Diana Matheson and Brittany Timko and forward Kara Lang -- are reconnecting after spending the season playing for various teams around North America. "This game is really kick-starting our campaign to 2015," Moscato said Monday at a news conference to promote the ticket sales for the 2014 FIFA U20 womens world cup that will be played in four Canadian cities. "Although were not looking necessarily two years in advance, right now we do have specific goals. Its centred around connection again. Weve been off for about a month after the NSSL season and we have all worked hard to be back in shape and fit for this game. But it really is about playing soccer together again and reconnecting with our national team goals and identity and wheres were going." The team, while won the bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics, has been in Edmonton for five days preparing for South Korea. While thats not a long time, both Moscato and McLeod said its been a great team-building experience. "Theres elements that are easy because were like a family now," said Moscato, who was off the national team for a few years before rejoining it in 2009. "Meals are always enjoyable, having chatsabut on the field, that winning behaviour, that gold-medal standard behaviour, it takes time to reconnect again.dddddddddddd" McLeod, a native of St. Albert, a bedroom community of Edmonton, said the team is fortunate in that the players have managed to stay connected over the years and the excitement of being together this week is "really bringing us together." Both agree the match with South Korea will be a test of just how together the team is and where it has to go from here to get ready for 2015. "Its going to be challenging," said the 30-year-old McLeod. "In the game there are going to be moments we might be disconnected, but I think thats good to have the test early on to see how much we can fight now, having been apart. And we will only grow from that." The teams are 1-1 in recent matches and McLeod said one of the keys for Canada is to get off to a good start. "We have to come out fighting and bringing the game to them," she said. "A lot of times we start games on our heels and we dont want to be like that this time, or anymore." South Korea is a technically disciplined team that Moscato says is very strong on the counter-attack and dangerous in its ability to regain the ball and sneak behind defences. "So its going to take a lot of defensive discipline for us to regain the ball immediately when we lose it," she said. "So thats a big focus for us because they are quite technically savvy and quite intelligent on the ball." Note: Lang will be with the team as she continues her comeback from two torn knee ligaments, but wont play Wednesday. FRANKFURT, Germany -- Bayern Munich set a Bundesliga record and opened up a four-point lead by beating Augsburg 3-0 on Saturday as Borussia Dortmund lost 2-1 in Wolfsburg. Goals from Jerome Boateng, Franck Ribery and Thomas Mueller extended Bayerns unbeaten run to a record 37 matches. "This record is incredible," Bayern coach Pep Guardiola said. Elsewhere, Son Heung-min scored a hat trick against his former team for Bayer Leverkusen to beat Hamburger SV 5-3 and level on points with Dortmund. Schalke got two goals from Kevin-Prince Boateng in a come-from-behind 3-1 victory over Werder Bremen. Adrian Ramos scored twice to secure Hertha Berlins 3-2 victory in Hoffenheim, after the visitors squandered a two-goal lead. Bayerns victory broke Hamburgs 36-match unbeaten run from January 1982 to January 1983. Bayern last lost on Oct. 28, 2012, 2-1 against Leverkusen in Munich. With 32 points from 12 matches, Guardiola has the best start of all-time of a coach in the Bundesliga. Bayern is four points clear of Dortmund and Leverkusen, while Wolfsburg is fourth, seven points behind the duo. Dortmund hosts Bayern in the next round, after the international break. Bayern eased past Augsburg after taking an early lead through a goal by Boateng -- the half-brother of Kevin-Prince -- in the fifth minute. Dantes glancing header off a corner landed in front of Boateng at the far post and he turned and drilled a left-foot shot into the opposite corner. Ribery fired a free kick into the upper corner in first-half injury time and Mueller converted a penalty in stoppage time to complete the victory. Dortmund went ahead in Wolfsburg but then fell to its second defeat this week, after losing at home to Arsenal 1-0 in the Champions League. It also lost central defender Neven Subotic to a knee injury shortly before halftime and Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp said the Serbia international may have damaged a ligament. Subotic was taken to a hospital for tests. Marco Reus curled a free kick over the wall in injury time of the first half. But Ricardo Rodriguez replied with another free kick goal, swinging the ball into the area where it took a bounce to fool goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller, who just got his first call-up for Germany at age 33. Ivica Olic sealed Wolfsburgs fourth straight victory with another long-range shot inside the far post, while Reus hit the post with another free kick. Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski had two penalty calls denied in injury time and Klopp had a heated exchange with officials after the match. Wolfsburg won despite playing without the injured playmaker Diego. "We made it easy for them (Wolfsburg)," Klopp said. The most entertaining game was in Leverkusen, where the home side saw Hamburg come back to level at 2-2 before pulling away again, with Son also setting up one goal and producing a key loss of possession that led to Hamburgs third goal. The South Korea forward scored twice inside the first 16 minutes, both times with his left foot and both times after shaking off Hamburg defender Heiko Westermann. Hamburg fought back with goals from Maximilian Beister and Pierre-Michel Lasogga, before Son completed his hat trick, this time with his right foot, on a deflected pass from Stefan Kiessling. Son then set up Kiessling for Leverkusens fourth goal, before Lasogga got his brace and raised his season total to eight goals. Gonzalo Castro secured Leverkusens victory in the 89th by lobbing the ball over Hamburgs goalkeeper Rene Adler. In Gelsenkirchen, Schalke fell behind on a goal from Felix Kroos, the brother of Bayerns Toni, before Boateng turned the match around with two headers. Substitute Jefferson Farfan put the issue beyond doubt in injury time, knocking in pass from Julian Draxler. Hoffenheim overcame a two-goal deficit, only to see Ramos knock in his second goal with a header in the 84th. Anis Ben-Hatira scored early after being put through by Ramos and the Colombia forward doubled the lead by converting a penalty. Hoffenheim pulled level after Sejad Salihovic first scored from the spot and then fired a free kick into the roof of the net. Ramos was unstoppable, however, rising to score with a header. http://www.magliaacmilan.it/maglia-ac-milan-luiz-adriano.htm l . LANDRY FIELDS (Raptors): He is looking much more comfortable each time I watch him play. Thats a good development for a guy that had injury issues/surgery to deal with last year. He lost his shot mechanics and, in many ways, his confidence. His shot release is still a bit slow but in time it will get better. Hell have to be conscious of that when he takes perimeter shots and make sure he has time to set himself up and get it off. His shot preparation will be very important. Hes a smart, team oriented player and does all the little things that coaches love and has a winning personality/approach. Too often folks focus on the contract - its not his fault that he got the deal he was offered, and who wouldnt take it? Bottom line for the Raptors, to compete for a playoff spot this year theyre going to have to find some consistent productivity from their second unit (an area of concern right now) and Fields is a guy that you hope can be ready to contribute. 2. REGGIE JACKSON (Thunder): Talk about a guy whos on the radar this year in OKC. With the trade of James Harden and the free agent departure of Kevin Martin to the Timberwolves, Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook will need some heavy perimeter support to make up the difference and keep their team at a high level. In his third NBA season out of Boston College, this is the year you have your fingers crossed his level of play is elevated and reliable. Hes got solid versatility in his game, has decent shot making ability and hell compete for you on the defensive end. Now its all got to come together and quick. Usually in the third pro season you find out an awful lot about a guy with the growth of his skills, strength, and basketball IQ. You focus on his dedication and overall makeup and whether hes got what it takes to take that next step. Time has arrived and hes going to get a shot each night. Take advantage. 3. LA CLIPPERS: The Clippers have decided to cover the Lakers Championship banners and retired numbers when they play their home games at the Staples Center. This has caused quite a stir and to be perfectly frank it should have happened the day they started playing games at the arena. Theyve been the JV team in LA for too long and they owe the Lakers organization and their former greats absolutely nothing.dddddddddddd Theyre a tenant of the arena just like the Lakers and can do whatever theyd like when its their building. Its their money and their time. I always wondered why they would ever even acknowledge the other team. This is competition; its ruthless and thats the way it would be if the shoe was on the other foot, thats for sure. 4. CHARLIE VILLANUEVA (Pistons): Villanueva will be starting his ninth NBA season next week and the question is if hell ever play at a consistently productive level as a pro. Hes coming off two poor seasons in Detroit where he averaged 7 ppg and 3.5 rpg while shooting an abysmal 38% from the field for a lousy team. Are you part of the solution or part of the problem? Ill never forget a conversation I had with an NBA College Scouting Director when he was a player at UConn. He said that Villanueva would end up playing for at least 4-5 NBA teams and be one of those guys that youd be fascinated by his skills and potential and yet always be frustrated that you never got the high level nights enough. After former Raptors GM Rob Babcock drafted him in controversial fashion hes had stints as well with the Bucks and now the Pistons. I like him, hes a good guy and not a problem player, yet hes just not getting it done. At age 29, its time. Now or never. 5. THOMAS ROBINSON (Blazers): Robinson is in his second season and already on his third NBA team after playing his rookie year in Sacramento and Houston. Is this another guy who will bounce around and not fulfill his potential? Honestly, I dont know yet. He averaged an underwhelming 4.8 ppg and 4.5 rpg in his rookie year; thats not going to make anyone happy for a lottery pick out of Kansas. I liked him in college yet I was a bit concerned with his size and still unpolished game. He reminds me of Truck Robinson (Im dating myself!) who had a good career (15 and 9) in his best days with Washington, Phoenix and New York. He needs to focus on being a terror on the glass and the other stuff will work itself out. Hell get a shot at good playing time in Portland and Blazers fans will hope the light comes on this season and he takes that significant jump as a player. Melbourne, Australia - Tomas Berdych fended off a David Ferrer comeback on Tuesday and reached his first Australian Open semifinal as a result. Berdych, seeded seventh, won the first two sets of the quarterfinal meeting in quick fashion, then suddenly lost the momentum when the third-seeded Ferrer rallied to win the third. The hard-hitting Czech, having lost in the quarters of the Aussie Open the previous three years, made sure it wouldnt happen a fourth as he finished off a 6-1, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 triumph at Rod Laver Arena. The first set lasted just 30 minutes, and Berdych appeared poised to make it a quick one by taking a two sets to love lead. Ferrer broke Berdychs serve twice in a third set that saw him nudge a line judge standing near a chair he wanted to put a towel on, a sign he was up for a fight. The frustrated Spaniard, however, couldnt overcome Berdychs serve in the fourth, as Berdych fended off a break point in the final game and came away with the victory in three hours, three minutes. Ferrer rallied from two sets down to beat Nicolas Almagro in last years Aussie quarters before eventually losing in the semis to Novak Djokovic, who will play eighth-seeded Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka in Tuesdays other quarterfinal. The former No. 1 Djokovic is a dominant 15-2 lifetime against Wawrinka, including a fourth-round win here a year ago. The Serbian star also topped the Swiss in a U.S. Open semifinal last season. Djokovic, seeded second this year, has won his last 25 matches at the Aussie Open, where hes the three-time reigning champion and has captured four of the last six titles Down Under. A hard-swinging rookie is trying to fill it in a bit. Khris Davis hit a pair of two-run homers in consecutive at-bats for the first multihomer game of his career, powering the Brewers to a 6-4 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Friday night. "I dont see any flaws in him right now," manager Ron Roenicke said. "Hes really doing a good job." The Brewers played their first game since Braun acknowledged in a statement that he used performance-enhancing drugs while recovering from an injury in 2011, when he won the National League MVP award. Players called it a good first step for Braun, who is serving a 65-game suspension from Major League Baseball. Davis rejoined the Brewers the day after Braun was suspended, getting his third stint of the season. Hes hit all eight of his homers in the 23 games since, including the two-run shot that put Milwaukee ahead 3-2 in the sixth. His next homer snapped a 3-all tie. "Im just having fun with it and trying to be loose out there," said Davis, who is batting .386 in Brauns absence. Scooter Gennett also homered for Milwaukee, which won at Great American Ball Park for only the second time in seven games this season. The Reds lost for only the fifth time in their last 17 games, a surge that has tightened the NL Central race. They came in a season-high 18 games over .500. Davis connected in the sixth off Homer Bailey and again in the eighth off Alfredo Simon (5-4), who had a rough inning. He also gave up Gennetts solo homer, which was upheld on review. Gennett also singled and doubled and scored twice. The Reds bullpen has lost set-up man Jonathan Broxton to an elbow injury and been forced to pitch a lot of innings lately. "That was uncharacteristic of Simon," manager Dusty Baker said. "I think you saw some signs of fatigue, and that Davis is the best young player Ive seen come into the league this year." Rob Wooten (2-0) hit a batter during his one inning in relief. Zack Cozart singled home a run in the eighth off Braandon Kintzler.ddddddddddddJim Henderson gave up a hit in the ninth while getting his 20th save in 23 chances, leaving him with 14 straight scoreless appearances. Bailey repeatedly went deep in the count to batters and retired the side in order only once during his six innings. Norichika Aoki singled home a run in the third. Aramis Ramirez doubled ahead of Davis homer to left-centre field in the sixth off Bailey, who is 2-7 career against Milwaukee. The Reds got a pair of runs in the fourth off Yovani Gallardo with the help of an error. Brandon Phillips singled, Ryan Ludwick walked, and both runners scored when Cozart singled to centre and Carlos Gomez bobbled the ball. Gomez hadnt played since last Thursday when he ran into the outfield wall, hurting his right knee. Phillips led off the sixth inning with his 16th homer, which cleared the wall in centre and tied it at 3. Gallardo also went six innings, giving up six hits and two earned runs. Davis won it with his second homer. "Its pretty impressive," Gallardo said. "We saw him swing the bat in spring training. He impressed a lot of people in spring training, and hes doing it now. Hes able to drive the ball the other way with power. "Its a big challenge when you have a hitter with power who can also go the other way and still drive it out of the park." Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca! Hi Kerry, I was timekeeping a AAA minor midget game last week when the following happened. A player was skating down the wing and then wound up to take a huge slap shot. When he took the shot, the puck actually split into two pieces with both halves of the puck entering the net for a score. Should the goal be allowed or not? Has anything weird like that ever happened to you in the pros during your career? One ref at the game actually thought a goal should be allowed but after all three officials got together, there was a ruling of no goal with the faceoff inside the zone. Thought maybe a weird situation would put a bit of a change of pace to your column. Cheers,Edward Sherr Edward: As weird as it sounds, I do recall a hard shot ring off the goal post in an NHL game I worked that caused the puck to break in half. Neither chunk of vulcanized rubber entered the net but instead split off in different directions. One piece travelled toward the end zone corner while the other portion found its way into the slot. Players scrambled in both directions, instinctively chasing the black disc that was nearest their position. I recall the look of shock on each players face after recognizing only half a puck existed in two different locations on the ice. I blew my whistle to halted play for this unusual situation. A discussion then ensued as to who caused the stoppage of play with regard to the resulting face-off location. The defending team protested that the attacking team had caused the stoppage with a shot that broke the puck. They rationalized their position no differently than shooting or deflecting the puck over the boards. I settled on the claim that it wasnt "who" (which team) but "what" (a faulty puck) that caused the stoppage and the resulting face-off was taken in the end zone corner where half the puck had come to rest. The fact is, Edward, that the entire puck must completely cross the goal line to count as a legal goal. Half a puck just doesnt cut it. The officials in the AAA Midget game, therefore, made the correct call; including the resulting end zone face-off location. Amendment/Addition: You have correctly noted from Edwards question that both halves of the broken puck entered the net. While there is nothing presently in the NHL Officiating Case book or anything that I could find in the Canadian Hockey Case Book or playing rules on the subject, we need to look at rule 13 - Puck. The puck shall be made of vulcanized rubber, or other approved material, one inch (1") thick and three inches (3") in diameter and shall weigh between five and one-half ounces (5 1/2 oz.) and six ounces (6 oz.). All pucks used in competition must be approved by the League. A puck that has broken in half does not conform to this rule in specified size or weight, nor is it approved for legal play. No goal would result should a puck that was broken in half and therefore deemed unfit for play (illegal) enter the net. This would include the case where separated halves found their way into the net. During the season, I had the puck split in half. Inglasco (the official puck supplier to the NHL) was having some quality control issues. You might recall that routine shots were causing the protective glass behind the goal to break at an unprecedented rate. I was told that there was a component in the puck that was causing this to occur. While that problem was quickly rectified, it brought special attention to the puck and particularly the inconsistency with which it settled or bounced on the ice. A study, conducted by an NHL-hired consultant with a PHD specializing in the field of rubber, revealed the ideal temperature at which frozen vulcanized rubber provided the optimum density to slide across the ice and minimize the bounce effect. Following the study, game puck supplies were to be kept in a special temperature controlled freezer that were installed in every NHL arena. Pucks that previously were kept cool in a bucket of ice at the penalty timekeeper bench were secured in a mini-freezer by an off-ice crew member that was in charge of pucks. Memos were sent to the head of each Off-Ice Crew on the new puck handling policy and optimum temperature that must be maintained. Linesmen were instructed to change out the pucks on a frequent basis. I will tell you first hand that the density of the frozen puck was noticeable when on occasion I was struck by one. Even a glancing blow provided an extra sting not previously experienced! With all this hoopla of information being circulated over the ideal puck temperature, Jeff Weintraub, head of the NY Islanders Off-Ice Crew (and a dear friend of all the NHL Officials) decided to have a little fun with us. Prior to a game I worked in Nassau Coliseum, Jeff entered our dressing room with a very serious look on his face and asked me if I would check the temperature of the game puck. Confused, I asked how the heck he expected me to do that. From behind Jeffs back he exposed a NY Islander puck with a hole drilled in it. Inserted in the hole was a "rectal thermometer!" What a ball-buster Jeff was. The bouncing puck also led to snow buildup being scrapped from the goal crease and around the dasher boards during commercial time-outs. Very quickly through the scraping process guys in sweat suits were replaced by scantily clad "Ice Girls." Its truly amazing the progress I witnessed during my 30 years as an NHL referee. CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- When Michael Jordan speaks, people still listen. The Charlotte Bobcats owner praised his team during a pregame locker room speech Friday night, but warned his players its only going to get tougher from here on out. Jordan spoke directly about the Bobcats potentially making the playoffs -- something that seemed inconceivable five months ago for a team that was 7-59 and 21-61 the previous two seasons. "He talked to them about the progress that he had seen and praised them for their attitude and togetherness as a team," coach Steve Clifford said. "And he let them know, which I thought was perfect, the toughest part is ahead. We made our first step and it now gets tougher. It was a great message." A message that apparently inspired the Bobcats, currently seventh in the Eastern Conference. Al Jefferson scored 28 points, Kemba Walker had 20 points and 14 assists, and the Bobcats (29-33) defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers 101-92 for their sixth straight win at home, surpassing their win total from the previous two seasons combined. It was an important win for the Bobcats, who improved to 3-0 this season against the Cavaliers and now own the tiebreaker against both Detroit and Cleveland, the ninth- and 10th-place teams in the East. "If that dont motivate you, I dont know what will," Jefferson said of Jordan addressing the team. Clifford said he asked Jordan to speak to the players before the game and he gladly accepted the invitation. He said players were "locked in" to every word Jordan spoke. "Lets face it, if youre coaching anywhere, he would be the first guy that you would say, Would you mind coming to talk to our team?" Clifford said. "Im saying hes our owner and, shoot, you are always looking for a little edge. I thought it was perfect." Said Jefferson: "He told us he was proud of us, but we have a long way to go. We cant be happy with what we have done so far. We have to continue to grow and get better." It was a huge loss for Cleveland. Dion Waiters and Luol Deng each scored 19 points for the Cavaliers, who began the night 3 1/2 games behind Atlanta for the final playoff spot in the East. They now trail Charlotte by 5 1/2 games. "It hurts," Cavaliers coach Mike Brown said. "Especially knowing where were sitting and where theyre sitting right now, its a tough loss." Jefferson shot 12 of 18 from the field and reached 20 points for the 22nd time in his last 24 games. Chris Douglas-Roberts added 14 points, including four 3-pointers, and a season-high nine rebounds. Charlottes six-game home winning streak is its longest since a seven-game run in March 2010. "There are 20 games left and its time to start talking about the playoffs -- about not just qualifying but getting our team game-ready for the playoffs and guys getting their individual games ready," Clifford said. The Bobcats defeated the Cavaliers by six points in each of the two previous meetings this season without Jefferson, who sat out both games with a sprained ankle. Jefferson had 38 points against Miami and 34 in a win over Indiana this week, and was a big factor from the outset against the Cavaliers. He used a series of pump fakes and up-and-under moves to fool the Cavaliers, and continued to knock down his mid-range jump shot. The 6-foot-10 centre scored 18 points in the first half on 8-of-10 shooting to help Charlotte build a 55-50 lead at the break despite the Cavaliers shooting 55 per cent from the field. Cleveland took an 81-80 lead on a pair of free throws by Waiters with 7 minutes left in the game. But Walker matched that with two free throws of his own and knocked down a jumper to spark a 15-5 run that put Charlotte safely ahead. The Cavaliers shot just 32 per cent in the second half, and Charlotte held Kyrie Irving to 13 points on 5-of-17 shooting. Irving came in averaging 24.5 points in his previous four games in Charlotte. Waiters said its not too late for the Cavaliers to make a playoff push. But theyll need to play much better than they did Friday night. "We have a chance and a shot, so why not? Why not us?" Waiters said. "Weve got to have a sense of urgency. The clock is ticking. The games are running out. Making the playoffs is right there and weve got a great opportunity." NOTES: Bobcats guard Gerald Henderson missed his third straight game with a right calf strain. ... Anderson Varejao (back) and C.J. Miles (ankle) were back at practice this week but didnt make the trip to Charlotte, which meant Spencer Hawes and Tristan Thompson were left to defend Jefferson. ... Now its official. The Angels beat Seattle 6-5 Saturday night for their 21st victory in 28 games, but this surge came way too late. Earlier in the day, they were mathematically eliminated from post-season contention. After starting the year with big expectations, boosted by the winter signing of former MVP Josh Hamilton, the injury-plagued Angels didnt spend one day atop the AL West after winning their season opener at Cincinnati. The Angels have been no fewer than nine games out of first place since the All-Star break. This is their fourth straight year without a post-season berth, after winning five division titles. "I think the one word that still lingers out of all this clubhouse and how we all feel is certainly frustration," manager Mike Scioscia said. "I dont think theres been any way to sugarcoat it. Its obviously not a good feeling when you dont accomplish your goal. "Theres been some nonperformance on our club, some injuries and some depth issues. But I think weve gone a long way in the past month to show the kind of baseball we can play, particularly on the pitching side. Hopefully well temper that frustration and finish strong," he said. Collin Cowgill homered and also stole home for the Angels. Rookie Grant Green hit a three-run double to help Jerome Williams win his fourth straight start. Cowgill walked and scored in the second inning and hit a solo homer in the fourth. He tripled to open the seventh, then broke for the plate as Andrew Romine squared around to try a suicide-squeeze bunt, and scored when left-hander Joe Saunders pitch sailed to the backstop. Williams (9-10) allowed one run, five hits and five walks in 5 2-3 innings. He left after No. 9 hitter Henry Blanco snapped an 0-for-32 drought with a bloop single. "I always want to go out there and do my best," he said. "Ive had a couple of rough stretches, and now I just want to finish strong and end this season on aa good note.dddddddddddd" Ernesto Frieri got three outs for his 36th save in 40 attempts despite giving up Raul Ibanezs 300th career homer. Ibanez and Ted Williams are the only players to hit 29 home runs during the season in which they were 41 years old. "I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to be in this situation," Ibanez said. "Anytime youre in the company of the great Ted Williams -- and its just this one thing that I have in common with him -- its a great blessing. I read his book when I was in high school, and he was the greatest hitter that ever lived." What made this milestone even sweeter for Ibanez was that it came with the Mariners, the team he began his big league career with in 1996. This is his third stint with the club. "Ive always considered myself a Mariner," said the 17-year veteran, who hit a career-high 34 homers in 2009 with Philadelphia. "This is the organization that first game me the opportunity. So to do this in a Mariners uniform, I feel very fortunate." Saunders (11-16) tied the Astros Lucas Harrell and the Cubs Edwin Jackson for the most losses in the majors. Saunders gave up six runs and six hits over seven innings and tied a career best with nine strikeouts. The 32-year-old left-hander threw 125 pitches, one short of his career high. Abraham Almonte scored Seattles second run on a seventh-inning balk by rookie Cory Rasmus. NOTES: Last year, the Angels post-season hopes ended with two games left on the schedule. ... LHP C.J. Wilson, who goes into Sundays start with a 17-6 record and a string of nine straight winning decisions, was presented with the fifth annual Nick Adenhart memorial award as the Angels top pitcher of the season during a pregame ceremony. Jered Weaver won it the first four years. ... Justin Smoak was hitless in three at-bats against Williams, and is 1 for 19 lifetime against him with seven strikeouts. ... The Mariners are 0-68 this season when trailing after eight innings, and 6-221 during Eric Wedges three years as manager. MELBOURNE, Australia -- Karrie Webb won the Womens Australian Open for the fifth time Sunday, shooting a 4-under 68 in the final round to beat Chella Choi by one stroke. Webb birdied the 18th hole to take the outright lead, then watched as Choi, who shot a course-record 62 on Saturday to take a share of the third-round lead, pushed a 10-foot putt wide of the hole at 18 to miss the chance for a playoff. Webb, who clinched her 40th LPGA title, finished at 12-under 276 overall. She previously won the Australian Open in 2000, 2002, 2007 and 2008. "I got off to a great start and I just did a great job mentally today," Webb said. "I cant think of another time when I held myself together as well as that." The win marked a remarkable change of fortune for the No. 8-ranked Australian, who was disqualified from last weeks Australian Ladies Masters after signing an incorrect scorecard. She had been the defending champion at the event. Webb started five shots off the lead Sunday, but made six birdies and only two bogeys as the other leading challengers struggled in a strong wind on the Victoria Golf Club course. "I was happy to see the conditions were going to be a little tougher today," Webb said. "I felt like that gave me a chance to make up some ground." Choi had played 14 holes and was at 11 under when Webb finished her round, leaving the Australian with an anxious wait to see whether her score would hold up. But the South Korean, who had two eagles and six birdies in her record-setting third round, couldnt make a birdie on the back nine Sunday. "When youre on the course you feel like you have some control, but when youre done you have no control and you just have to wait and see," Webb said. "I actually thought once Chella had that putt on the last, Ive played with her quite a bit and I was expecting that one to go in." Choi was trying to win her first LPGA title. World No. 2 Suzann Pettersen of Norway faltered in her bid to take over the top ranking from South Koreas Inbee Park. Pettersen, who started the day three shots off the pace in fourth place, needed to finish first or second to pass Park, but had three double bogeys in a final round 80 to drop back into a tie for 28th. Sixteen-year-old Lydia Ko of New Zealand, the world No. 4, was also unable to challenge Webb, struggling with her putt on the back nine and shooting a 73. She finished tied for third with American Paula Creamer (68) and Frenchwoman Karine Icher (71). Seventeen-year-old Australian amateur Minjee Lee, the co-overnight leader, had seven bogeys and a double bogey in an error-filled final round of 78. She finished in a share of 11th place. They were predicted by most experts to be among the worst teams in the league, if not the worst. Through six games, the Sixers are choosing not to listen. Evan Turner scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, Tony Wroten added 18 points and the Sixers cruised past the Cleveland Cavaliers 94-79 on Friday night, overshadowing the return of Andrew Bynum. Thaddeus Young added 16 points, while James Anderson and Michael Carter-Williams had 11 each for the Sixers, who ended a two-game losing streak and improved to 4-2. Spencer Hawes scored 10 points. "I think the biggest thing is were not listening to anyone on the outside and were just coming to work ready to play," said Young, who added eight rebounds. "We have a young, hard-working group of guys in here and we all have a lot to prove. We just need to stick together and I think our confidence is growing with each win." Wrotens offensive output was a career-best. "It was a great feeling," Wroten said. "Hard work has paid off. Getting an opportunity to play is a blessing." The buzz leading into the game was the return of Bynum, who signed a two-year, $24 million contract with the Cavaliers in July. Bynum had been acquired by the Sixers in a four-team, 12-player trade in the summer of 2012. But the two-time All-Star centre never played for the Sixers because of bilateral bone bruises in both knees. He had season-ending arthroscopic surgery in March and wound up signing the incentive-laden deal with the Cavaliers as a free agent. Booed every time he toucheed the ball, Bynum played 18 minutes in a reserve role and finished with four points and five rebounds.dddddddddddd "It was just another game for me," Bynum said. Bynum said he wasnt bothered by the chilly reception from the Philadelphia fans. "I thought it was a little weak," Bynum said. "I thought it was going to be much worse. It wasnt." Dion Waiters led the Cavaliers with 18 points while Jarrett Jack and C.J. Miles added 13 each. Tristan Thompson had 13 points and 16 rebounds and Kyrie Irving contributed 10 points on 4-for-17 shooting for Cleveland, which fell to 2-4 with all four losses coming on the road. "We need some grittiness and some toughness to surface, especially on the road," Cavaliers coach Mike Brown said. "Right now, its not happening and I dont know if its because we dont have the home crowd giving us a little extra energy or what it is." The Sixers built a 19-point lead early in the fourth quarter. Cleveland never got within single digits the rest of the way. The Cavaliers led by as many as 14 points in the first half, but the Sixers finished the half strong and took a 44-42 advantage into the locker room. NOTES: Cavaliers F Anthony Bennett left the game with 8:37 remaining in the second quarter and didnt return because of a sprained right shoulder. Bennett, the No. 1 overall pick in Junes draft, was scoreless in six minutes and remains 1 for 20 from the field through six games. . Sixers C Daniel Orton missed the game because of right knee soreness. . The Sixers wore red, white and blue headbands in honour of Veterans Day, which is Monday. TSN Hockey Insiders Bob McKenzie and Darren Dreger have the latest on the possible movement involving the Canucks Ryan Kesler, the Rangers Ryan Callahan, and the Maple Leafs Dave Bolland. Not long ago Bob, you mentioned that the Vancouver Canucks are willing to deal anybody but the Sedin twins. Whats the latest on that front? Bob McKenzie: The team that Im most interested to see what, if anything, they do is the Vancouver Canucks. Now I can tell you this, there are multiple teams in the National Hockey League that are looking at veteran defenceman Alex Edler and veteran forward Ryan Kesler and are trying to find out if the Canucks are possibly serious about moving these guys and if so, what the price is going to be. Now keep in mind a couple of things - nobody in Vancouver leaves if they dont want to leave as there are lots of no-move, no-trade clauses, and we also want to see what happens with Kesler with the MRI coming back on the finger from the shot that he blocked at the Olympics. In New York talks have clearly broken down between Ryan Callahan and the Rangers with Callahan set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. Is it now a foregone conclusion that hes going to move? Darren Dreger: Im told that its 99 per cent guaranteed that Ryan Callahan will get traded by the New York Rangers. There are many teams involved in this process. We know that the St. Louis Blues have been the most consistent in showing interest, and theres some connection with the Tampa Bay Lightning and other teams as well. But theres an ongoing back-and-forth with defenceman Dan Girardi as well. Many predicted that this deal would be done by now to keep Girardi with the Rangers. If hes not signed by March 5, the trade deadline, theres also a 99 per cent chance that he gets traded. McKenzie: And youre right Darren, there have been no talks over the Olympic break between Callahan and the Rangers. There has been ongoing dialogue with Girardi - there seems to be a little bit of a difference in term, maybe a little less than $500,000 a year difference in money, but theyre working and trying to get that done. In Toronto, Dave Bolland is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. How are negotiations going there, and what are the chances hes still a Maple Leaf on March 6? Dreger: Well this is going to be a real difficult negotiation for the Toronto Maple Leafs, very similar to the one they had with Tyler Bozak creeping up to the trade deadline last year. Of course trading Bolland is an option, its believed he wants as much as $5 million, maybe better than $5 million per year to stay with the Leafs to avoid unrestricted free agency. So the Leafs have a tough decision to make, since they would rather pay him in the $4 million range than the $5 million range. So do they hold him, and use him as their own rental and take their chances on trying to sign him? They need to make a hockey deal and not a trade that would include draft picks coming back the other way. Then what do the Leafs need? Dreger: The Leafs need a top-four defenceman and theyre also in the market for a top-nine forward. Again, Dave Nonis is less interested in a rental player and more interested in adding pieces that are going to help this team in the playoffs. Whats the latest on Ryan Millers status with the Buffalo Sabres? McKenzie: There have been reports out there that the Sabres are trying to sign Miller. My clear understanding is that the priority and the preference is still to try and get a trade for netminder Ryan Miller and virtually any other player on the roster. General manager Tim Murray is open for business, and there isnt a single untouchable on this team, maybe with the exception of Zemgus Girgensons. The New York Islanders are also conducting an auction for forward Thomas Vanek and defenceman Andrew MacDonald. As many as six teams have enquired on Vanek, and there was at least one serious offer that was rejected by the Islanders. At least seven teams have enquired on McDonald but there have been no firm offers at this point. Dreger: Some are suggesting that maybe there is a three-way deal involving the St. Louis Blues and perhaps the Minnesota Wild where Jaroslav Halak might be included. Maybe Jake Allen, I know the Buffalo Sabres would want to get him as part of a package. Again, thats the time of year it is and thats the type of rumour mongering that goes on creeping up to the deadline. Were hearing that Mike Cammalleri has been offered a deal by the Calgary Flames. What are the chances that he remains a Flame after the deadline? McKenzie: I think its much more likely that he gets traded than remains a Flame, but there is a remote possibility that Cammalleri could get a deal done with the Flames. But at this point the smart money suggests that he would be - along with those guys like Matt Moulson, Thomas Vanek and others - as a goal-scoring winger who could be had as a rental. BARCELONA, Spain -- Cristiano Ronaldo scored a double and set up another goal for Real Madrid in a 4-1 comeback win over Getafe on Sunday in the Spanish league, as new teammate Gareth Bale couldnt make his home debut after injuring his leg before the match. Bale was dropped from Madrids starting lineup minutes before the match after the clubs medical staff examined his left thigh during warm-ups at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. The club said it was for "precaution" and that he would undergo tests Monday. Things only got worse for Madrids disappointed fans when Getafe forward Angel Lafita opened the scoring in the fifth minute. But Pepe scored from a rebound in the 19th before Ronaldo converted a penalty in the 33rd, set up Francisco "Isco" Alarcon in the 59th, and added another goal in injury time after Getafe had been reduced to 10 men. "Overall we played a good game. We were unlucky to start a goal behind, but I think our reaction was good," said Madrids first-year Italian coach Carlo Ancelotti. "Sometimes we play too far back in defence, but piano piano we are improving." Madrid remained undefeated through five rounds and is in third place in the standings, two points behind Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. Villarreal also stayed unbeaten in its return to Spains top flight after drawing 0-0 at Celta Vigo. The same lack of finishing touch condemned Real Betis to a 0-0 finish against visiting Granada, leaving both teams with one win. Valencia enjoyed a much-needed 3-1 victory at home over Sevilla, breaking a four-game losing streak that included a 3-0 defeat to Swansea in the Europa League on Thursday. Brazilian forward Jonas scored twice for Valencia, netting in the 32nd and then again in the 73rd after Kevin Gameiro had levelled for Sevilla in the 52nd. Substitute Victor Ruiz headed in Valencias last goal in the 82nd and sparked the same Mestalla crowd that had protested after the Swansea loss into chants of "Yes! Thats the way!" Valencia president Amadeo Salva said after the match that new coach Miroslav Djukic will finish out the season "no matter what happens." The result left Unai Emerys Sevilla winless and in last place.dddddddddddd Ronaldos 208th and 209th career goals for Madrid in 205 games moved him ahead of Hugo Sanchez as the clubs fifth all-time leading scorer. Raul Gonzalez holds the record with 323 goals. Ronaldo has scored seven goals in his last four games in all competitions for Madrid. If losing Bale for what was supposed to be his highly-anticipated first game in front of Madrids fans wasnt a big enough blow, Carlo Ancelottis side soon fell behind to their modest crosstown rivals. After Ronaldo had squandered back-to-back scoring chances, the Portugal forward lost the ball and Getafe struck when Lafitas resulting shot took a deflection off Pepe before landing in the net. But Ronaldo helped Madrid level when he drew a save from goalkeeper Miguel Moya, with the rebound falling for Pepe to tap in. Ronaldo put Madrid in front by driving a low spot kick just inside the post after Getafes Miguel "Michel" Marcos blocked his free kick with his arm inside the area. Ronaldos quickly taken free kick left Isco alone in the area to curl in his fourth goal in the league play. "It didnt matter that Bale wasnt there, Isco took his place," said Getafe coach Luis Garcia. "All their players are good. With Madrid you cant talk about them missing players." Getafe played the final five minutes with 10 men after Michel was sent off with a direct red card for fouling Jese Rodriguez with only Moya to beat. Ronaldo, who had clipped the post in the 79th, got his well-earned brace when he used a brazen back-heeled shot with his right boot to redirect Sami Khediras cross into the net. Madrid paid Tottenham a world-record 100 million euros ($132 million) for Bale at the close of the summer transfer market. Ancelotti said Bales injury didnt appear to be serious. "(Bale) wasnt comfortable or calm. I preferred to prevent any problems," said Ancelotti. "He isnt happy because he was very excited to play in the Bernabeu." The next chance Madrids fans will have to see Bale at home will be next Saturday against Atletico Madrid in the Spanish capital derby. The reigning U.S. horse of the year emphatically defended his title in the $1-million Ricoh Woodbine Mile, earning a comfortable 3 1/2-length victory for his ninth straight graded stakes win. And just for good measure, the six-year-old gelding posted a course-record time of 1:31.75 on a firm turf at Woodbine Racetrack. "I feel like weve got a great horse," LoPresti said. "What he did today, I mean I say it every time he runs with what he does and how he does things, was really impressive. "I dont know (about Wise Dan being better now than he was last year). I dont know how much better he can get but hes very good. Theres no sign hes slowing down, I can tell you that, for his age. He is a dream come true." Breaking from post four, Wise Dan effortlessly stalked the pace behind early frontrunners Excaper and Dimension. At the head of the stretch, Wise Dan took off like a rocket, easily passing Excaper and Dimension into the lead. And that point, the only question that remained was Wise Dans winning margin. However jockey John Velazquez, who claimed a record fourth Mile crown, said his trip wasnt flawless. "I think I did a little too much with him in the post parade," Velazquez said. "He was kind of quiet and he broke well and I put him right behind the other two horses and he got rank with me. "I thought, Come on buddy, please come off the bridle a little bit. Once he did that, I waited until the 5-16ths pole and let him ease out from those two horses and as soon as he saw the wire he just went on." Wise Dan earned the $600,000 winners share and a berth in the Breeders Cup Mile on Nov. 2 at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif. Wise Dan is the defending Breeders Cup Mile champion. It was a record-setting performance for both Wise Dan and his connections. He became the first two-time Mile winner while LoPresti earned his record-tying third straight victory in this event. Za Approval was second with Trade Storm taking third in overcast, breezy conditions. The remainder of the field, in order of finish, included; Riding the River; Dimension; and Excaper. Garrett Gomez, the jockey aboard Za Approval, could only tip his cap to Wise Dan. "He (Za Approval) was just no match for Wise Dan," he said. "Theres no shame in that. "Hes the best turf horse in North America." Trade Storm finished third despite being last with a quarter-mile remaining. "I was further back than I wanted to be," jockey Gary Stevens said. "I kind of lost touch down the back straight with him and I had to just sit where I was once I was there. "Hes only got a furlong in him so I couldnt really kick on any earlier with him than what I did." The win was Wise Dans 10th in 11 career turf races and 18th overall in 25 starts with career earnings surpassing $5 million.dddddddddddd. Over the last two years, he has won 10-of-11 starts, the lone blemish being a second-place finish by a head to Ron The Greek in the Grade 1 Stephen Foster Handicap in June 2012, a 1 1/8-mile dirt race at Churchill Downs. Wise Dan is undefeated since then but LoPresti doesnt lose sleep worrying about his horses amazing streak. "The most important thing to me at this point is that he runs his race, he comes back good and he can run again in his next race," he said. "Sure, I dont want him to get beat, I wouldve liked to not have got beat in the Stephen Foster, he wouldve had just about a perfect record last year and this year. "But he has been beat before. I dont want him to get beat but Im not going to jump off the building with a rope around my neck if he does." LoPresti will wait to see how Wise Dan recovers from the Mile before deciding whether to run him before the Breeders Cup. Last year, Wise Dan won the $750,000 Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland before going to the Breeders Cup and LoPresti wont say if hell follow a similar gameplan. "Even though it looked so easy you never know how much a race like that takes out of a horse because of the strain hes been under," LoPresti said. "But Ill only run him if its right for the horse . . . hes going to have to tell us. "I really dont think Im up against the wall to do anything with him because hes dead fit . . . I think I have him where he needs to be for the Breeders Cup." With three straight Mile victories, Woodbine is fast becoming a favourite track for LoPresti, who says hed like to return in 2014. "I dont have any reason not to come back, (Woodbine) has been good to me three years in a row," he said. "Id sure like to bring (11 Mile champion) Turallure back here and get him back on track. "I want to come back. Maybe Ill get some nice fillies to bring and some other horses besides just this one race." Also on Sunday, French-bred Minakshi, a 7-1 pick with Woodbines Luis Contreras aboard, won the $300,000 Northern Dancer turf event run at about 1 1/8 mile in 1:44.05. Colonial Flag, at 10-1, was second ahead of 16-1 longshot Moment of Majesty. Hall of Fame trainer Roger Attfield had the first two finishers in the $300,000 Canadian Stakes, a 1 1/8-mile turf race for fillies and mares. Forte Dei Marmi, the 4/5 favourite won its third straight stakes race in 2:28.46 by a neck over 16-1 longshot Perfect Timber. Patrick Husbands, a resident of Brampton, Ont., and seven times Canadas top jockey, rode 15-1 longshot Alythiela to victory on Sundays card, his first since a racing mishap in May. Husbands, 39, suffered a fractured tibia at Woodbine when his mount collapsed just after the finish line and he was caught beneath the horse. The Broncos will reciprocate by giving a game ball to their coach, whos at his off-season home in Charlotte, N.C., recovering from heart surgery. With interim coach Jack Del Rio in charge, Peyton Manning threw for 330 yards and four touchdowns, three to Demaryius Thomas, as he efficiently led the Broncos to a 28-20 victory in their first game since Fox had his aortic valve replaced last Monday. Fox was released Friday and will continue his recovery at his off-season home. "We look forward to giving it to him in person," Manning said. Manning said he spoke with Fox by phone on Saturday before the Broncos flew to San Diego. "I told him not to be yelling at me during the game. Its not good for his blood pressure," Manning said. "Im not sure well see if he did or didnt. But he was in our thoughts. Coach Del Rio has done a good job all week keeping us updated on coach Fox." Fox planned to watch the game on TV there, a team spokesman said. If he watched, he probably didnt like seeing Manning hurting his right ankle when he was hit by Corey Liuget as the Broncos ran out the clock in the closing minutes. Manning stayed in the game. Manning wouldnt be specific about his injury, but said he was "pretty sore" and that he planned to have an MRI on Monday. Manning was hurt after completing a pass to Thomas with 1:44 left. "We were playing aggressively to win the game right there," Del Rio said. "He made a throw, D.T. made a catch and that was the ballgame. He got up and didnt want to come off -- very proud guy -- and closed out the game for us." Asked about playing in the Broncos showdown with AFC West leader Kansas City (9-0) next Sunday night, Manning said: "I totally plan on it." Manning kept the Broncos (8-1) rolling. He threw touchdown passes of 11, 7 and 34 yards to Thomas on consecutive drives spanning the second and third quarters, staking the Broncos to a 28-6 lead. Julius Thomas had a 74-yard catch-and-run on Denvers first drive, turning a short pass into the second-longest play by a tight end in team history. Liuget said it wasnt an intentional hit. "I was trying to get to him because I knew how critical it could be to us as a defence to get to him. I was just working it and trying to be the guy. Im not sure how I caught him but I hope he is OK. Its not anything that is going to stop him from being Peyton Manning." The Broncos scoring drives lasted 57 seconds; 2 minutes, 27 seconds, 1:25, and 3:26. "You knew it wasnt going to be many possesssions and we had to be efficient when we had the ball," Manning said.dddddddddddd. Manning has thrown for 3,249 yards and 33 touchdowns in nine games. He completed 25 of 36 passes against the Chargers. The Chargers (4-5) closed the gap late in the second half but couldnt catch up. The Chargers were inside the Denver 23 three times in their first four possessions and had to settle for field goals of 26 and 40 yards by Nick Novak. Novak was wide left on a 37-yard attempt with 1:38 left before halftime. "Three opportunities, you get six points and they score 28," said Chargers rookie coach Mike McCoy, who was Denvers offensive co-ordinator the past four seasons. "As you go along that is critical. When you play Peyton you have to get touchdowns. Weve just got to do a better job." Mannings big afternoon was marred only when rookie linebacker Tourek Williams hit Manning from behind and knocked the ball loose, with Donald Butler recovering at the Denver 11 midway through the third quarter. Two plays later, Philip Rivers found Danny Woodhead for a 7-yard scoring pass. The Chargers pulled to 28-20 on Ryan Mathews 1-yard touchdown run on third down with 10:42 to play. A week earlier, the Chargers had the ball first-and-goal from the Washington 1 before Woodhead was stuffed and Rivers threw two incompletions before settling for a field goal to force overtime. The Redskins won 30-24. Novaks miss late in the second quarter gave Manning enough time to move the Broncos 73 yards in nine plays, all passes, capped by his 7-yard scoring throw to Demaryius Thomas for a 21-6 lead before halftime. Manning threw only one incompletion that drive. The Broncos got the opening kickoff of the second half and went 78 yards in eight plays, with Thomas 34-yard TD catch giving the Broncos a 28-6 lead. "So its a 14-point swing -- the difference in the ballgame," Manning said. The Chargers finished the game without left tackle King Dunlap, who sustained his third concussion this season, and centre Nick Hardwick, who had a stinger. Rookie right tackle D.J. Fluker moved to left tackle. Rivers completed 19 of 29 passes for 218 yards. NOTES: The Broncos have scored 371 points, the most through the first nine games of a season in NFL history. LOUIS -- Matt Holliday was hit by a ball three times while he was in the batters box. He was sore from head to toe. Of course, he did have a great big smile on his face after another important victory for St. Louis. Holliday drove in a run for the seventh consecutive game, helping Joe Kelly and the Cardinals beat the Cincinnati Reds 6-1 on Tuesday night. St. Louis won for the sixth time in seven games, including the first two of its three-game series against third-place Cincinnati. The NL Central-leading Cardinals moved 1 1/2 games ahead of Pittsburgh, which lost to Milwaukee, and 4 1/2 games up on the Reds, who won the division last year. Kelly (6-3) scattered eight hits and allowed one run in six innings. He also walked three but managed to improve to 6-0 since rejoining the starting rotation on July 6. The 25-year-old Kelly has won each of his last three starts and five of his last six overall. He has a 2.08 ERA in 34 2-3 innings this month. "I made pitches when I had to and I enjoyed that," Kelly said. "My arm felt good. They got guys in scoring position a couple times, I just tried to bear down and leave those guys out there." St. Louis manager Mike Matheny is impressed with Kellys recent run. "Joe did a good job, he had great life again," Matheny said. "He just keeps making good starts for us." Shin-Soo Choo homered for the Reds, who lost for the fourth time in five games. Cincinnatis last 13 batters went down in order in its third consecutive loss to St. Louis, making it 4-10 against the Cardinals this year. The hot-hitting Holliday had a rough game at the plate, at least physically. He fouled two separate pitches off his foot and toe in different at-bats. He also was plunked on the shoulder by a pitch from Alfredo Simon in the eighth. The last blow signalled the end of his day. But he went 2 for 3, including an RBI single against Mat Latos in St. Louis two-run first. He is batting .346 with three homers and 10 RBIs over his last seven games. Hollidays RBI string is tied for the second-longest in the majors this season. Arizona slugger Paul Goldschmidt had an eight-game RBI run in early June. Latos (13-5) gave up four runs and nine hits over six-plus innings. He has dropped two of his last three starts. The Cardinals went 4 for 11 with runners in scoring position. ";Thats the type of team that we are," Holliday said.dddddddddddd Holliday admitted that he was sore after the rough night. He even joked he would soon be wearing a catchers shin guard to the plate to prevent any further damage. The Cardinals needed just 14 pitches to take a 2-0 lead. Matt Carpenter and Carlos Beltran began the first back-to-back singles. Holliday then singled in Carpenter, who scored his major league-leading 100th run. Beltran scored when Allen Craig bounced into a double play. Choo hit a leadoff drive in the fifth for his 100th career homer, but the Cardinals answered with single runs in the sixth and seventh and scored twice in the eighth. Craig pushed the lead to 3-1 with a run-scoring double in the sixth, giving him 96 RBIs on the year. Carpenter brought in Jon Jay with a sacrifice fly in the seventh. "A loss is a loss, youve just got to play better baseball," Cincinnati manager Dusty Baker said. "There are a few things weve still got to learn about playing winning baseball." Baker was particularly upset with a baserunning error by Zack Cozart in the fourth inning. Cozart and Jay Bruce ended up on third base at the same time after Bruce was held while rounding third on a hit by Latos. The play ended the inning. Had Cozart stopped at second and noticed Bruce was being held up, the Reds would have had the bases loaded for Choo. "Its my (mistake) definitely," Cozart said. "It was a bad play. You have to keep your head up. When I got to third I was surprised Jay was even there. That was a big part of the game." Baker was not in a forgiving mood. "Sometimes guys have got to be held accountable for their actions," he said. "Theyre all big boys, theyre all getting paid here." NOTES: Adam Wainwright (15-7, 2.58 ERA) faces Homer Bailey (8-10, 3.71) in the final of the three-game series Wednesday. Bailey is 0-5 with a 6.90 ERA in seven career starts at Busch Stadium. ... MADRID, Spain -- Two goals by Ibai Gomez helped Athletic Bilbao come from behind to beat Valladolid 4-2 at the new San Mames stadium in the Spanish league Monday. Valladolid opened the scoring against the flow of play when Oscar Gonzalez struck the back of the net from what appeared to be an offside position in the 15th minute. But in an eventful last 25 minutes, Gomez pounced on Valladolid goalkeeper David Marino punched-out save to equalize in the 65th, before Oscar de Marcos added another for Athletic 10 minutes later. Gomez doubled his tally in the 82nd and Ander Herrera made it 4-1 four minutes later. "The squad is in good shape, finishing games and reaching 90 minutes well, which is very important," Gomez said. Valdet Rama pulled one back when he beat three Athletic defenders before shooting into goal in injury time. "Our rivals flattened us even though we spent 60 minutes defending well," Marino said. http://www.portugalnationalshop.com/Daniel-Carrico-Portugal- Jersey/ . -- James Young couldnt wait to apply those tweaks to his jump shot, and the first one he made against UT Arlington told him it could be a good night. http://www.portugalnationalshop.com/Blank-Portugal-Jersey/ . NEW YORK -- Left-hander Matt Thornton completed his $7 million, two-year contract with the New York Yankees, who cut outfielder Vernon Wells. Thornton gets $3.5 million in each of the next two seasons under the deal, which was agreed to Dec. 17 and announced Friday. His contract raises the Yankees luxury tax payroll for next season to $175.7 million for 13 signed players. Including a pending $2 million, one-year deal for second baseman Brian Roberts and an estimated $11.5 million per team for benefits, New Yorks tax payroll is at $189.2 million -- above the $189 million tax threshold for the upcoming season. However, Alex Rodriguezs $27.5 million luxury-tax salary would disappear if his 211-game suspension is upheld by an arbitrator. The 37-year-old Thornton replaces Boone Logan, who left for a $16.5 million, three-year contract with Colorado. A 10-year big league veteran, Thornton was 0-4 with a 3.74 ERA in 60 relief appearances last season for the Chicago White Sox and Boston, which acquired him in July for minor league outfielder Brandon Jacobs. Wells, who was designated for assignment, was acquired last March from the Los Angeles Angels and hit .233 with 11 homers and 50 RBIs in 424 at-bats. The 35-year-old, a three-time All-Star, became superfluous when the Yankees signed Jacoby Ellsbury and Carlos Beltran to join an outfield that already included Brett Gardner, Ichiro Suzuki and Alfonso Soriano. New York is responsible for just $2.4 million of Wells $21 million salary in the final season of his $126 million, seven-year contract, with the Angels paying the Yankees $18.6 million as part of the trade last March. A team that signs Wells would be responsible for just $500,000, the major league minimum. http://www.germanynationalshop.com/Benedikt-Howedes-Germany- Jersey/ .com) - The women will also have a new champion at the Australian Open. http://www.germanynationalshop.com/Customized/ . ATLANTA - B.J. Upton would like a do-over on his debut season with the Braves. The subject came up when Upton, as part of the teams winter promotional tour, made a recent visit to Redan High School in the Atlanta area. He was asked by a student if would change anything in his career. Upton didnt hesitate before answering, "Anything in baseball? Last year. The whole last season." Its an understandable wish. After signing the biggest free-agent contract in Braves history — $75.25 million for five years — Upton endured a nightmarish 2013 season. He hit only .184, struck out in more than one-third of his at-bats and was benched. The only highlights were playing beside his younger brother, Justin Upton, in the outfield and seeing the Braves advance to the playoffs. "Definitely it was tough," B.J. Upton told The Associated Press. "You know, baseball is going to throw you some curveballs, so to speak." After missing far too many curveballs — and fastballs and sliders — Upton is writing off the season as an aberration. "Maybe not to that magnitude, but at some point I think every player goes through that type of season," he said. "As long as you can learn from it so that some of the things that happened wont happen again, thats all you can ask." The new start begins with spring training. Braves pitchers and catchers report on Thursday. The full squad reports on Feb. 18, and the first full-squad workout is Feb. 19. Upton impressed his teammates and manager Fredi Gonzalez by continuing to spend extra time on his swing through his disappointing season. "Hes one of the hardest workers on the team," said third baseman Chris Johnson. "Hes always in the cage. Those two brothers are workhorses." Assistant hitting coach Scott Fletcher said Upton never changed his demeanour, even after losing his starting job. "He didnt pout," Fletcher said. "He just kept working. He was ready for anything that Fredi needed from him. That shows a lot of his character. I look for him to come back and do well. Thats just the type of competitor he is. Hes had a lot of great years and hes going to continue to do that. I think hes going to have some great years for us." Upton hit 28 homers and had 31 stolen bases in 2012 with Tampa Bay. He hit only nine homers with 12 steals last season. The Braves need Upton, 29, to at least approach his career .248 batting average. Upton worked on his swing at his off-season home in Tampa, Fla., where he had a visit from Braves hitting coach Greg Walker. "My reports from Greg have been positive," said Braves general manager Frank Wren. "I think hes approached the off-season well. From what Greg has seen of his work, he thinks its steps in the right direction." After last season, Wren said Upton may have tried too hard to show he deserved the big contract. "Its a deep hole that gets deeper and deeper the harder you try," Wren said. "Weve seen dozens and dozens of players go through it." Upton said he didnt expect such a difficult transition to the National League. "Its just the nature of the beast," Upton said. "You come to a new organization and a new league and its just a whole bunch of variables that I dont think you really think of affecting you as a player, and they might have the slightest bit. I dont think a lot of guys see it really hitting them that hard. It was just a totally different situation. "Obviously you dont want it to go that way. I dont regret it. Maybe it was something I needed to happen. Its not something Im going to dwell on. Its a fresh start and I get to move on." Adidas Zx Flux Baratas .
