MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- Cam Newton angrily slapped his hands together and stared into the end-zone stands, watching Miami Dolphins fans celebrate the interception he had just thrown. His mistake helped put the Carolina Panthers in a deep hole Sunday, but Newton knew how to get out. He led a late comeback for the second time in a week, converting a fourth-and-10 situation at his 20 with a completion to keep alive the Panthers final possession, and their touchdown with 43 seconds left beat Miami 20-16. The Panthers (8-3) overcame a 16-3 first-half deficit for their seventh win in a row, their longest streak since 2003. "It may not be pretty," Newton said, "but at the end of the game we get that three-letter word, and thats gorgeous." Newton hit Greg Olsen with a 1-yard pass for the winning score to cap a 12-play drive. Carolina also rallied past the New England Patriots with a late drive last Monday. The Dolphins (5-6) fell to 2-2 since tackle Jonathan Martin left the team and the teams bullying scandal began to mushroom. "Weve got to make plays at the end when it counts," receiver Mike Wallace said. "Weve got to have a killer instinct. I dont think we have it that well right now. Weve got to do a better job of putting teams away." The Panthers trailed 16-13 when their winning drive began at their own 20 with 4:13 left. With only one timeout remaining, they went for it on fourth down, and Newton threaded a pass between two defenders to Steve Smith for a 19-yard gain. A backbreaker for Miami? "Im not sure theres any other word to describe that," defensive lineman Jared Odrick said. "Thats when the tide shifted in our favour," Newton said. Carolina then converted two third downs before Newton hit Olsen for the winning score. Ryan Tannehill nearly connected with Wallace for a 60-yard score in the final seconds, but the pass fell incomplete at the goal line. "Thats a tough play," Tannehill said. "Youre basically a hope and a prayer and get it out there." "A little scary," Carolina coach Ron Rivera said. Tannehill and Wallace earlier teamed up for a 53-yard touchdown and a 57-yard completion to set up a field goal. Newtons interception led to another field goal by Miami. He was erratic at the outset, perhaps partly because he bit his tongue when hit on the first series, and he finished with a quarterback rating of only 60.6. But Newton was at his best with time running out. Following the Panthers uncharacteristically slow start, he led them 52 yards for a field goal in the final 61 seconds of the first half with no timeouts left, taking advantage of Miamis soft coverage to cut the deficit to 16-6. Riveras willingness to take chances paid off in the third quarter. From the Panthers 41, Newton ran for 8 yards to convert a fourth-and-1, and they went on to complete an 83-yard touchdown drive to make the score 16-13. "They have been calling our coach Riverboat Ron because he likes to gamble," Newton said. Newton scored on a 5-yard keeper in the third quarter and celebrated with a dance tribute to LeBron James, mindful he was in the Miami Heat stars area code. "Three-oh-five is where he reigns supreme with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh," Newton said. "Im big fans of those guys." For the second game in a row, the Panthers Luke Kuechly made a big play in the end zone that was disputed. He appeared to make helmet-to-helmet contact when he broke up a potential touchdown catch by Rishard Matthews, and an official threw a flag, but the referee determined there was no penalty and Miami settled for a field goal and a 16-3 lead. Kuechly bear-hugged the Patriots Rob Gronkowski on the final play of the Panthers victory at New England last Monday. While Tannehill threw for 280 yards, he was also sacked three times to increase his season total to 44, a franchise record. Carolina held Miamis running backs to 16 yards in 13 carries and shut out the Dolphins over the final 31 minutes. "We were lazy in the first half," Carolinas Smith said. "We underestimated that team." The Dolphins fell to 4-4 in games decided by four points or less. "We were a couple of plays away from winning," Tannehill said. "Weve got to be able to make those plays. Its tough to win three-point games every week. When the defence is playing well like that, weve got to be able to score more points." NOTES: Miami RB Daniel Thomas left the game in the third quarter with a left ankle injury. ... The Panthers had been 0-4 previously against Miami. ... Major League Baseball says its virtually certain all the new systems will be in place for opening day. MLB Executive Vice-President Joe Torre met with general managers Tuesday and said he expects approval from owners, players and umpires by January. "We expect to be all on the same page by the time we need to have it," he said. Virtually all umpires calls other than balls and strikes, checked swings and some foul tips will be reviewable. The system was tested last week during Arizona Fall League games, with two major league umpires reviewing video and making the final call. Owners are expected to give their go-ahead Thursday for funding and then approve the rules when they meet in January. "Im sure theyll do as much testing as they think is feasible, but ultimately theyll probably go with what they have," New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said. "There probably will be bugs. ... It might be a little rough at the beginning, but I think that things will work out thereafter." Baseball started using video review in 2008 but limited it to home run calls -- whether a ball went over a fence or was fair. "Wed like to have everything clean and be incorporated into the challenge system," Torre said. Most reviews during the Arizona test averaged 1 minute, 40 seconds. Torre expects the new system will be used at some but not all spring training sites. "We have to make sure the managers have a chance to practice with this. They need practice only because its never been done before," he said. "Youre not going to be able to test it everywhere because you just cant put the equipment everywhere." On another matter, Torre said there will be no change to baseballs obstruction rule, which gave St. Louis a controversial 5-4 win over Boston in Game 3 of the World Series last month. Cardinals runner Allen Craig tripped over Boston third baseman Will Middlebrooks in the ninth inning of a tied game and was awarded home plate on obstruction -- intent is not a factor in the obstruction decision by umpires. "I really dont see anything" to be done, Torre said, before adding: "Nobody wants a game to end like that. I dont think thats any secret."
