PITTSBURGH -- It took a rare team meeting for the Washington Nationals to get what lately has been a rare victory when Stephen Strasburg starts. Strasburg struck out eight in seven innings and the Nationals won one of his outings for the first time since opening day by beating the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-4 Saturday. "I was absolutely happy about getting through the seventh inning," Strasburg said. "The biggest thing is to give your team a chance to win the ballgame. Not every game are you going to be lights out and hitting every spot." Strasburg remained winless since his first start, though. He allowed four runs and five hits -- all of Pittsburghs offence coming on two-run homers by Starling Marte and Clint Barmes. Strasburg is 1-4 with a 3.45 ERA in seven starts this season. "I thought (Strasburg) threw really well," Nationals manager Davey Johnson said. "He made one good pitch after another. He only made two bad pitches all day, a couple over the heart of the plate that they hit out of the park. But he held us in the game and did a good job." Tyler Moore hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth inning off Tony Watson (1-1) to score Ryan Zimmerman, who was on third after an unlikely double steal. Zimmerman and Adam LaRoche had combined for 36 steals in 2,219 games and none this season when they took off and got good enough jumps that Pirates catcher Russell Martin didnt even bother throwing. "We know who has what times (to the plate), what guys are slow and what guys are fast and what guys give a guy like me an actual chance to steal a base," said Zimmerman, whose steal of third was the first of his career. "When youre looking at a pitcher that takes 1.8-2.0 seconds to get the ball to the plate, I should be able to steal off him." Johnson said the Nationals were being more aggressive on the bases in an attempt to jump-start a lethargic offence that had scored three or fewer runs 14 times in its most recent 20 games. Before the game, Johnson called a team meeting with the same goal in mind. His primary message: Relaxe. For the first time since the franchise moved from Montreal eight years ago, the Nationals entered the season with extremely high expectations. The NL East champions began the game with 239 strikeouts by their batters, second-most in the NL, and whiffed 14 times during Fridays series-opening loss. In an effort to loosen the team up, the 70-year-old Johnson even took batting practice -- getting about 40 hacks -- for what he said was the first time in 25 years. The results were mixed most of the afternoon: The Nationals scored more than three runs for the first time in seven games, but had only six hits. Pirates starter Jeff Locke allowed three of those during his five-plus innings, allowing four runs, three earned, with three walks and three strikeouts. "Well, we got a few more guys on base," Johnson said. "We didnt get many in -- but its a start." Ian Desmonds sacrifice fly in the third snapped a 15-plus scoreless inning streak by Locke. Adam LaRoche drove in Zimmerman with a fly to right an inning later after Zimmerman led off the inning with a triple. "Everything felt pretty good today," Locke said. "I just need to be a little bit more efficient early in the count." A day after striking out four times upon being activated from the disabled list, Zimmerman scored three runs. Wilson Ramos RBI single in the sixth tied the game at 4 after Pittsburgh built a two-run lead. Tyler Clippard (2-1) pitched a scoreless eighth and Rafael Soriano got his 10th save with an unconventional 1-2-3 ninth. Martin was thrown out at second trying to extend a leadoff single, then Soriano got Pedro Alvarez to pop out and Jordy Mercer to strike out to end the game. Martes homer was his fourth of the season. Barmes, who scored two runs and doubled his RBI total on his first home run of the season, improved his season average from .173 to .192. "Its definitely always nice to help out on the offensive side of things," Barmes said. "Hit a ball hard and finally got something out of it." NOTES: Washington OF Denard Span was not in the lineup a day after fouling a ball off his right foot. The Nationals are without OF Jayson Werth (right hamstring) for the series. ... Pittsburgh had a four-game home winning streak snapped. ... All of the Pirates seven runs in the series have come by way of home run. ... Pittsburgh CF Andrew McCutchen extended his hitting streak against the Nationals to 17 games. ... A pair of left-handers start in the series finale Sunday. The last time Pittsburghs Wandy Rodriguez (2-1, 3.91) faced Washingtons Gio Gonzalez (2-2, 3.54), it was a 1-0 pitchers duel won by Gonzalez on April 17, 2012. Jermon Bushrod Dolphins Jersey . The match started slowly for Ivanovic, who surrendered her first two serves as Hantuchova took a 5-3 lead. LaMichael James Jersey . Mitch Holmberg added a goal and three assists. Connor Chartier also scored for the Chiefs (3-0-0). Luke Harrison spoiled Garrett Hughsons shutout bid with a power-play goal at 13:17 of the third period. The Spokane goaltender finished with 28 saves, including a Brandon Fushimi penalty shot in the second period that would have tied the game 1-1. http://www.jerseyshoptheofficialdolphins.com/Elite-Matt-Darr -Dolphins-Jersey/ .4 million title. Kelvin Sheppard Dolphins Jersey . "Thank you for the warm welcome," Beckham said on an 80-degree February morning. In this case, it was soccer weather. The sport moved a step closer to returning to South Florida on Wednesday, when Beckham confirmed he has exercised his option to purchase a Major League Soccer expansion franchise in Miami.PHOENIX - Jeremy Jeffress faced two batters in the 10th inning of Wednesdays 4-3 Blue Jays loss to the Diamondbacks. Both hitters singled. The second hit, off the bat of pesky shortstop Willie Bloomquist, scored Adam Eaton and gave Arizona the series sweep-avoiding win in walk-off fashion. Not a pleasant return to the majors for Jeffress in his first appearance in almost five months, but occasionally in defeat, there is victory. Jeffress story, this 2013 season, is one of overcoming. First, a little background. There have been problems since his draft year of 2006 when he went 16th overall to the Milwaukee Brewers. There was the positive test for a "drug of abuse", marijuana. He got a warning. In 2007, he tested positive again and sat for 50 games. Two years later, he tested positive again and sat for 100 games. If theres a next time, a fourth time, Jeffress will be banned from baseball for life. "Stoner," they yell. "Addict," they scream. You name the catcall, hes heard it. Jeffress ignores them, which has become easier to do because now he understands why he would get high. The marijuana helped him to cope with juvenile epilepsy, a condition thats affected him for years but was only recently diagnosed by doctors at the Women and Childrens Hospital in Buffalo. "To get that taken care of, I know baseball is my life, but being healthy and being away from my family for this long, that was just the biggest key," Jeffress told TSN.ca. "At first, when I got into the hospital, it messed with me a little bit. Its like, I just want to be on the field. Whenever Im on the field, I dont think about the seizure stuff but now that I understand, that was a big key to my life." The "seizure stuff" Jeffress is referring to is only one of the symptoms of juvenile epilepsy. Theres also twitching, especially prevalent at the start and the end of the day. Theres anxiety. Its a cruel mixture, especially when it persists for years without proper diaggnosis.dddddddddddd. Jeffress spent about five weeks on the disabled list. He was prescribed medication, which he now swears by, that has alleviated the twitching and calmed him down. He hasnt had a seizure in more than two months. Now, Jeffress just wants to focus on mastering his craft. Hes coming along in that regard. Like Neil Wagner, Jeffress is a flame-thrower. Every now and then, the radar gun hits triple digits when hes on the mound. He saved some games for the Bisons when Wagner was called up. However, also like Wagner, Jeffress struggled for years to command his lively fastball. Hes made an adjustment, under the tutelage of Bisons pitching coach Bob Stanley, dropping his arm slot. Despite averaging 4.3 walks per nine innings in 25 appearances for Buffalo, Jeffress believes hes on the right track. "Everybodys always told me I dont have to over-amplify and overdo myself just to get the ball past people," said Jeffress, who turns 26 on September 21. "Putting it in certain spots and working down in the zone, thats tough to hit already. Me thinking, before, that I had to blow it by everybody with 98 to 99 and just try to do it that way, it wont work. You have to be not too fine but just in the zone more consistently." Its hard to say what opportunities will arise over the final three and a half weeks. Jeffress will be called upon in certain high-leverage situations, like he was on Wednesday, and hell have the chance to show what he can do. In his third organization, there was a stop in Kansas City after Milwaukee, Jeffress knows a strong showing will plant a seed with general manager Alex Anthopoulos. The organization loves his arm. "I really just want to show them that Im very capable for them to trust in me," said Jeffress. "Thats what I want them to do is basically trust me. If were in a close game or whatever and we need a couple of outs, I want them to have my name in their heads, for sure. Just get them to see that I can do the job."
