DUBLIN, Ireland -- Giovanni Trapattoni lost his job as Ireland coach Wednesday after a five-year run that started out strongly but ended in a string of dismal defeats. Tuesdays 1-0 loss away to Austria meant the Republic of Ireland no longer has any realistic hope of qualifying for next years World Cup. It proved to be the last straw for the Football Association of Ireland, which had heralded Trapattoni as the most successful club coach in history when hiring him in 2008. The federation and Trapattoni said in a joint statement they mutually decided to end a contract that was supposed to run through June. The FAI also cut ties with Trapattonis longtime assistants, Marco Tardelli and Franco Rossi. "We leave this country with emotion because we understand the Irish supporters, who have a well-deserved international reputation and they have our utmost respect," Trapattoni, 74, said in his statement. He cancelled a planned news conference. Trapattonis qualification campaign for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil featured an Ireland team with little attacking flair, a weak midfield and an unusually shaky defence. The opening home match, a 6-1 drubbing by Group C favourite Germany last October, was Irelands worst home defeat since 1931. The FAI offered no hint when it would hire a long-term successor. Ireland still has two World Cup qualifiers next month in Germany and at home versus Kazakhstan, but analysts agreed that Ireland probably would install a temporary caretaker. Irish betting company Paddy Power listed former Celtic, Aston Villa and Sunderland manager Martin ONeill as the clear favourite to succeed Trapattoni. ONeill, from Northern Ireland, is without a coaching job and has worked with many of Irelands players at English and Scottish club level. Steve Staunton, Trapattonis predecessor as Ireland manager, said it had been a mistake to hire a coach so foreign to Irish players and culture. Trapattoni, lacking fluency in English, struggled to communicate with his team, didnt watch the club performances of Irish players in person, and spent most of his time in his native Milan. Staunton said he wanted the next manager to be from Ireland or Britain, "someone who knows what the Irish boys are about and knows the mentality." Criticism of the often inflexible, long-ball tactics deployed by Trapattoni had swelled since 2012, when Ireland lost all three of its European Championship group matches in one-sided fashion. He also was lambasted for eccentric squad selections that failed to promote young talent in favour of lacklustre veterans who stuck from his initial 2008 squads. Trapattoni often countered by noting -- too frankly for some Irish ears -- that Irelands top players were mostly run-of-the-mill talents who struggled for regular playing time in their British clubs. Brian Kerr, a Dubliner who coached Ireland in 2003-05, said Trapattonis negative defensive tactics downplayed his players skills and hurt their morale. "I dont agree with him when he says Irish players are not capable of passing the ball around. They are professional footballers, many playing in the Premier League. They can pass the ball. Ive seen them do it," Kerr said. Dubliners seeking a return to Irelands 1990s glory days under Jack Charlton had celebrated the 2008 hiring of Trapattoni, waving Irish flags adorned with the Italians grandfatherly face above the slogan "In Trap we trust." Ireland had not qualified for an international tournament since 2002. But Trapattoni guided his squad to the verge of qualification for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa -- only to be denied by an egregious, and uncalled, handball by Thierry Henry that produced a decisive extra-time goal for France in its playoff with Ireland. The FAI appealed in vain to FIFA for a slot in South Africa. Trapattoni received stronger praise for leading Ireland in 2012 into the European Championship, its first time in that tournament since 1988. But speculation on his dismissal steadily grew after Ireland lost all three group matches in Poland, where the Irish were paired with eventual finalists Spain and Italy. They respectively trounced the Irish 4-0 and 2-0. Irelands last positive result of note under Trapattoni was a 1-1 friendly draw against England at Wembley Stadium in May. Trapattoni came to Ireland with a stunning record of success at club level. He won six Italian titles with Juventus and one with Inter Milan, the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich, the Portuguese league with Benfica and the Austrian league with Salzburg. He also won three UEFA Cups, the Cup Winners Cup, the European Super Cup and the European Cup. But his four years in charge of Italy were disappointing. In the weeks leading up to the end of the season, speculation was rife that the Scotsman would be replaced so the news comes as no surprise. Its a move that may even have happened if the Whitecaps had managed to sneak into the playoffs. Rennie has trumpeted his teams achievements loudly in recent weeks. This year, they set the clubs highest ever MLS points total, scored the most goals, won the Cascadia Cup against their rivals Seattle and Portland, and beat the Sounders, LA and New York for the first time in MLS. Brazilian sensation Camilo secured the leagues Golden Boot and the club won the MLS Player of the Week award a league high seven times. There was plenty to shout about, and on a number of occasions at BC Place this season, they played some scintillating soccer to entertain and engage the fan-base. However, those achievements mean very little without reaching the two main goals of making the playoffs and winning the Canadian Championship. The Whitecaps came close to both, but close wasnt good enough for Rennie to keep his job. Its true that the club has made progress in each of the seasons Rennie was in charge, but this year, that progress just wasnt big enough to keep up with the teams around them. The fact is, in an extremely competitive Western Conference, the Whitecaps slipped back. Their progress was much smaller than other teams such as Portland and Colorado, who took big strides forward. Its not just about the seasons record. There were other issues at play. Rennies team selections often provoked much discussion, including his desire to play Japanese defensive midfielder Jun Marques Davidson, especially at home. There was the regression of 2012 number 2 draft pick Darren Mattocks, the lack of playing time down the stretch for youngster Gershon Koffie and teenager Kekuta Mannehs thunderous impact when finally handed starts late in the season. Also at times, the Whitecaps looked as though they were trying to fit square pegs in round holes, until they finally swittched to a 4-4-2 diamond midfield system late in the year.dddddddddddd The fact the Caps lost their captain and highest paid defender Jay DeMerit just seven minutes into the new season, and were without their DP striker Kenny Miller for long stretches due to injury clearly didnt help. The Whitecaps never really had a settled side because of injuries and also the coachs choice. Did Rennie know what his best 11 was and the best way to utilize them? It seemed he was still trying to figure that out late in the year. Of course, with any team and any coach anywhere in the world, there are bound to be questions about player selections and formations, but theres little doubt these questions played into the mind of those making the decision. Although Whitecaps ownership has decided to go in a different direction, Rennie still deserves much credit for what he has achieved during his time in Vancouver. He leaves the Whitecaps in a much better position than when he arrived at the club following a dismal expansion season. Over the last couple of years, they have established themselves as an MLS club, assembled a much stronger squad and made the playoffs for the first time in 2012 after turning around one of the worst teams in the league. The Whitecaps are still missing a couple of key pieces that will need to be found in the off-season, but they have a young, dynamic squad that can be a contender for the foreseeable future. Players like Camilo, Gershon Koffie, Kekuta Manneh and Russell Teibert have the potential to be big stars in Major League Soccer, and there are more coming through the Whitecaps pipeline with the likes of Sam Adekugbe ready to step into the first team squad next year. Rennies hiring of some strong assistant coaches, Paul Ritchie, Carl Robinson and Jake DeClute assisted the development of many of the clubs younger players. They were all very shrewd hires by a thoughtful, intelligent head coach. So what now? I think starting completely from scratch would be a massive mistake. There is some momentum. The Whitecaps arent too far off with the squad they have had assembled, so whoever takes charge should be willing to add to what is already in place rather that start again and try to do things a different way.
