ATLANTA -- Henrik Stenson capped off the best stretch of his career Sunday with the biggest payoff in golf. Stenson held off a brief challenge by 20-year-old Jordan Spieth and closed with a 2-under 68 to win the Tour Championship by three shots over Spieth and Steve Stricker. The 37-year-old Swede also captured the FedEx Cup and its $10 million bonus. Stenson earned $1.44 million for winning the tournament. Stenson, who two years ago was outside the top 200, moved to No. 4 in the world. Spieth left one lasting impression on his remarkable rookie season. The youngest player in Tour Championship history ran off four straight birdies on the back nine at East Lake and pulled within one shot of Stenson with his 10-footer on the 16th. Spieth caught a buried lie in the bunker short of the 17th green and made bogey, while Stenson steadied himself with an 8-foot birdie on the par-5 15th to return his lead to three shots. Stenson only made it easy at the end with three pars -- nearly holing out from the bunker right of the 16th green, hitting a scary shot from the right fairway bunker on the 17th to the middle of the green, and saving par from another bunker on the 18th. Spieth closed with a 64, while Stricker had a 65. Stenson, who finished at 13-under 267, became the first European to win the Tour Championship and the FedEx Cup. His amazing summer began with a tie for third in the Scottish Open. Stenson followed with a runner-up at the British Open and the World Golf Championship at Firestone, third place at the PGA Championship and a win at the Deutsche Bank Championship. The Tour Championship was his second win in three tournaments of the FedEx Cup playoffs. "Since the Scottish Open, its been just an incredible run," he said. "Im speechless. It was a tough day out there. To hang in there the way I did, Im really satisfied. ... It hasnt quite sunk in yet. I had to fight hard mentally to keep all this aside, and I managed to do that. Its going to feel better as the week goes on. Im pretty sure about that." Tiger Woods, the No. 1 seed going into the Tour Championship, never recovered from his 73-71 start. He closed with a 67 to tie for 22nd, his worst finish ever at East Lake, and wound up second in the FedEx Cup. That still was worth a $3 million bonus. Woods wrapped up the PGA of Americas points-based award for player of the year, and he captured the PGA Tour money title and the Vardon Trophy for the lowest adjusted scoring title. Next up is a vote of the players for PGA Tour player of the year. He is the heavy favourite with five wins this year. The award is to be announced on Friday. Stricker had birdie chances on the last two holes, unaware that making one of them would have been worth an extra $1 million. He only cared about winning the tournament, knowing he needed birdies and for Stenson to make a mistake. "I knew the putt meant a lot. I didnt know it meant that much," he said with a smile. Instead of finishing second in the FedEx Cup, Stricker had to settle for third and the $2 million bonus. Spieth had a 55-foot birdie putt across the 18th green that stopped inches away. His season was simply remarkable. The young Texan started the year with no status on any tour, and wound up with a win, more than $3.8 million in earnings and a trip to the Presidents Cup in two weeks. "Henrik obviously was playing phenomenal golf," Spieth said. "I felt like once a few putts started falling, we have a shot at it." Stenson became the fifth player to win his debut at the Tour Championship, a list that starts with Tom Watson when the elite 30-man field began in 1987. He also became the first player to go wire-to-wire without ties since Watson. For much of the day, no one got closer to Stenson than three shots, and he answered that early challenge with an 8-iron to an elevated green at No. 7 to 2 feet for birdie. The Tour Championship came to life in the final hour, though, thanks to the youngest player in the field. Fearless as ever, Spieth began a run of birdies starting on the 13th hole that not only moved him into second place, it put pressure on Stenson not to drop any shots. Stensons only bogey came on the 14th, when he caught a flyer over the green and missed a 20-foot putt. Spieth was between clubs on the 17th, however, tried to hammer a 9-iron and caught just enough heavy that it plugged in the bunker. The next challenge came from Stricker, who rolled in an eagle putt on the 15th to get within two shots. He never got any closer. The Browns coaching search remains incomplete.Winnipeg Jets 5 San Jose Sharks 4 (Shootout) – The Winnipeg Jets trailed 2-0 after the first period, 3-1 in the second and 4-3 in the third but perseverance paid off in a game that saw them fire 46 shots at Antti Niemi, the most shots the Sharks have allowed this season. The Jets have now won three straight games at home, three of their last four overall and for only the second time this season they have won back-to-back games. The Sharks meanwhile are 0-1-4 in their last five. Dan Boyle opened the scoring for San Jose on a power play and, despite having been outshot 10-3 at that point, the Sharks were up 1-0. Just 1:14 after that goal, Sharks centre Tomas Hertl broke in alone, scored his rookie leading 10th of the year and the first period ended 2-0 despite the Jets outshooting San Jose 15-9. At the 6:12 mark of the second period, Michael Frolik got the Jets on the board on a great pass from Matt Halischuk. It was Froliks fourth goal of the season, one more than he scored last year in the shortened season. That goal started a scoring spree as Tommy Wingels restored San Joses two goal lead 41 seconds later. With the goal, Wingels extended his point streak to six games. But, Dustin Byfuglien made it three goals in just 2:26 when he scored his first of the year to get the Jets back to within one. It has been an interesting few days for Chris Thorburn. Friday when it was announced that Byfuglien had scored his first, Thorburn was credited with his first point of the year. But when the goal was changed to Eric Tangradi, Thorburn lost his assist. Tonight, Thorburn was initially given an assist on Byfugliensgoal, but after video review, the assist was changed to, you guessed it, Tangradi. Before the second period came to an end, Grant Clitsome also scored his second of the year to tie the game. Clitsome had two assists to go along with his goal for his second career three point game. There was plenty of energy in the MTS Centre for this one, as the shots after two periods were 32-21 in favour of the Jets. Nothing seems to come easy to the Jets though as Byfuglien was given a delay of game penalty at the buzzer for shooting the puck over the glass with a couple seconds left. The Jets killed that penalty, but could not kill a tripping call on Halischuk and again found themselves behind. The Jets were short-handed three timmes in the third, with the power plays at the end of the night favouring San Jose six to two.ddddddddddddThe Sharks lead the NHL in power play chances while the Jets are second in the NHL in total short-handed situations. With the period winding down, and Ondrej Pavelec starting to make his way out of the net, Bryan Little found Andrew Ladd in the slot and his quick release found the back of the net to tie the game at four. It was Ladds fifth goal of the season. The final shots after regulation and overtime were 46-34, with both goalies being forced to make big saves. Ladd put one off the post in overtime, before being the only player to score in the three-round shootout to earn the Jets their eighth win of the year. The Jets are now 6-5-1 at home. It was Ladds fourth shootout goal of the season and fifth career shootout winner, second this year. In his career, Ladd is now 10 for 20. Patrick Marleau did score in overtime but the goal was called back as the officials ruled Wingels had interfered with Pavelec. There was no penalty on the play, but the goal was disallowed. The Jets are now 3-1 in the shootout and are a perfect six for six over the last two shootouts, Pavelec replied a quick "no" on the TSN Jets post-game show about perhaps liking that part of the game a little bit more. With the two assists, Little now has five goals and nine points in the last seven games, Ladd now has 12 points in 13 career games against San Jose and has two goals and eight points in his last six games. The Jets will play in Detroit Tuesday (TSN, TSN 1290), then at home against Philadelphia Friday (TSN Jets, TSN 1290). It is the second meeting of the season with the Red Wings after a 4-2 win for the Jets last Monday. Jets coach Claude Noel had reason to smile after this one. "The outcome was great, we played a strong game. We battled back, didnt lose our focus or our hope. Never got rattled, where a week or two back we might have. Its a huge building block in a lot of different ways. We played with some heart, some passion. I really enjoyed the game," He said. The Jets played their style for the win. "We were good on the fore-check and put pucks to the net," continued Noel. "They dont give you much. We played hard." On Ladds game, "he has a sneaky wrist shot and his will to win is infectious."
