KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Auburn doesnt have to worry about passing to remain in the running for a Southeastern Conference title. Nick Marshall rushed for 214 of Auburns 444 yards Saturday as the seventh-ranked Tigers needed just nine pass attempts to roll to a 55-23 victory over Tennessee. Auburn also scored on a kickoff return and a punt return - the first time the Tigers have ever done both in the same game -- and set an NCAA single-game record by averaging 44.85 yards on seven combined kickoff and punt returns. "I still believe we can throw the football," Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said. "Theres no doubt in my mind we can, but when you dont have to, you dont." Auburn had attempted just nine passes last week in a 35-17 victory over Arkansas. Marshalls third and final pass completion Saturday was a 25-yard touchdown pass to C.J. Uzomah with 6:36 remaining in the first quarter as the Tigers (9-1, 5-1 SEC) earned their sixth straight win to remain in control of their destiny in the SEC Western Division race. Marshall ran for two touchdowns on just 14 carries and threw for a third score. Tre Mason rushed for 117 yards and three touchdowns as Auburn averaged 8.4 yards per carry and had the most yards rushing by a Tennessee opponent since Alabama ran for 457 in a 56-28 victory over the Volunteers in 1986. "They couldnt really stop the run, so we just kept our foot on their throat and just ran it down their throat," Marshall said. Chris Davis put Auburn ahead for good and broke a 13-all tie in the second quarter with an 85-yard punt return, Auburns longest since 1970 and the third-longest in school history. Corey Grant returned the second-half kickoff 90 yards for another Auburn touchdown. According to Auburns sports information department, the Tigers average of 44.85 yards on seven combined kickoff and punt returns set an NCAA single-game record, breaking the previous mark of 41.8 per return set by Florida State in a 56-21 loss to Virginia Tech in 1974. "Weve got one of the best kickers in college football, one of the best punters in college football," Malzahn said. "Now were starting to get the return game right." Rajion Neal rushed for 124 yards and Michael Palardy kicked three field goals for Tennessee (4-6, 1-5), which dropped its third straight game. The Vols must win the rest of their games to become bowl eligible and avoid their fourth consecutive losing season. Tennessee hosts Vanderbilt on Nov. 23 and closes the regular season Nov. 30 at Kentucky. Tennessee hasnt had four straight losing seasons since 1903-06. "This senior class now, theyre going to be defined by how they finish," Tennessee coach Butch Jones said. "How do they finish their careers?" Tennessee was playing its fifth straight opponent ranked 11th or higher and was facing a ranked foe for the seventh time in eight games. According to STATS LLC, Tennessee is the first team since Pittsburgh in 1993 to play seven ranked teams in an eight-game stretch within the same season. Auburn entered the day leading the SEC with 306.2 yards rushing, 69 more than anyone else in the league. Tennessee was allowing 5.1 yards per carry and a league-high 201.7 yards rushing per game. Both trends continued Saturday. Every time Tennessee seized the momentum, Auburn regained control by running the ball. "Our mindset is to score every time we touch the ball," Mason said. "We believe. And when you believe, you can achieve." After Neal broke at least three tackles on a spectacular 17-yard touchdown run in the first play of the second quarter to put the Vols ahead 13-6, Auburn tied the game less than a minute later on a two-play, 75-yard drive. Marshall started the drive with a 62-yard keeper and Mason followed by running 13 yards around the left end without getting touched. Marshall made a rare mistake when he threw an interception that Jacques Smith returned 18 yards for a touchdown that cut Auburns lead to 27-20 with 1:28 left in the half, but the quarterback redeemed himself 37 seconds later by racing 38 yards around the left end untouched for a touchdown that restored Auburns 14-point advantage. "Even when we had individuals in position, we couldnt get him down," Jones said. Tennessee also couldnt slow down Auburns returners. The Vols entered the day ranked 27th among all Football Bowl Subdivision teams in punt coverage, but they gave up two long punt returns Saturday. Davis fumbled one punt at the Auburn 15, then picked the ball up and raced down the left sideline for an 85-yard touchdown. Davis also had a 42-yard punt return that led to Auburns first touchdown of the game. Mason set up Auburns final touchdown of the first half by returning a kickoff to the Tennessee 45. Grant extended the Tigers lead to 41-20 with his 90-yard kickoff return that opened the second half. Tennessee never threatened again. Lamar Miller Jersey .Y. -- The Buffalo Sabres have placed centre Cody Hodgson on injured reserve and recalled two players from their AHL affiliate in Rochester. Louis Nix Texans Jersey . Third-seeded Murray had the easiest path to victory on New Years Eve, barely breaking a sweat during his 6-0, 6-0 win over 2,129th-ranked Qatari wildcard recipient Mousa Shanan Zayed. http://www.footballtexansjerseysofficial.com/texans-deandre- hopkins-red-jersey/ .Y. -- Sabres defenceman Tyler Myers had no intention of changing his hard-hitting style before taking part in a disciplinary hearing for his illegal check to New Jersey forward Dainius Zubrus head. Tyler Ervin Texans Jersey . Datsyuk will miss Tuesdays game against New Jersey and could be sidelined longer, while Cleary will likely miss at least the next three games. Its been an injury-plagued season for Datsyuk, who has suited up for just 39 games. Ryan Griffin Texans Jersey . The quest begins with what is supposed to be an easy one, although Germany has traditionally been a stubborn opponent to Canadian teams at international tournaments. BOSTON -- Things were bouncing right for Milan Lucic and the Boston Bruins. Lucic scored a pair of goals and Patrice Bergeron added another, lifting the surging Bruins to a 3-1 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday. "Its nice to have some puck luck," said Lucic, who said both goals hit a Blue Jackets player and changed direction en route to the net. The rugged Boston winger, who also had a fight in the second period, even thought linemate Jarome Iginla may have scored the second one. "I thought Iggie may have gotten it," he said. "But its nice to get two goals and my first power-play goal of the season." Lucic hadnt scored a goal in his past six games after getting off to a fast start with nine. Boston coach Claude Julien felt the winger just needed to relax and things would start to turn his way. "I thought maybe he was gripping the stick a little tight in certain areas," Julien said. "I just told him to go out and play. I liked his game a lot tonight." David Krejci added two assists for Eastern Conference-leading Boston, which is 10-2-2 in its past 14 games. Bostons Chad Johnson needed only 13 saves for the win in just his fifth start. No. 1 goalie Tuukka Rask was given the night off. Johnson knew it was an easy night. "The first period I didnt face many shots and in the second not many high-quality chances," he said. "Its tough to get into it, but Ive had some good practices lately." The Bruins havent lost at home in regulation in 11 games (9-0-2). Boston has won all three meetings between the teams this season. Ryan Johansen scored a power-play goal for the Blue Jackets, who were outshot 36-14. Backup goaltender Curtis McElhinney stopped 33 shots for Columbus, which lost for the 12th time in 17 games. The Blue Jackets havent won consecutive games since late October. "Its definitely frustrating. I think some night that we have lost the effort wasnt there," winger Matt Calvert said. "But I thought tonight we worked hard, we did a lot of good things. "But, once again, against a good team like this, youve got to find a way to win. Its always a tough building to come into, but we didnt find a way tonight and were going to keep on searching for it." Boston jumped ahead 1-0 when Bergeron scored on a tough-angle shot at 9:02 of the first. HHe fired one from near the right boards and the puck slipped behind McElhinney as Boston winger Loui Eriksson was cutting in front.dddddddddddd The Bruins made it 2-0 on Lucics power-play goal with just over 5 minutes left in the first. Torey Krug fired a shot from the left point and Lucic, positioned in front, tipped it by McElhinney. Lucics second goal of the game made it 3-0 just over 2 minutes into the third. He fired a shot from the high slot and the puck popped into the air after McElhinneys stop and bounced into the net behind him just as Iginla was ready to bat it in. Johansens team-leading 10th goal came on a wrister from the top of right circle with just under 14 minutes left. Coming off a 4-2 win over Edmonton at home on Friday night, the Blue Jackets had trouble generating much offence. The Blue Jackets were outshot 9-2 in the first and it didnt get much better for them in the second. They were held to three shots on goal for nearly half of the period until a power play gave them a brief spark. "Not enough (shots) and not enough quality ones either," forward RJ Umberger said. "Weve got to find a way to generate more." Possibly looking to give his team a lift, Columbus defenceman Dalton Prout took on Boston heavyweight Lucic for a fight midway into the second. Things were chippy, at times, for stretches in the second -- with a couple of scrums after whistles. Columbus went nearly 18 minutes without a shot on goal from the first into the second -- and that was a clear from their own zone on one of Bostons power plays. The Bruins posted a 3-2 victory over the New York Rangers on Friday. NOTES: The Bruins improved to 14-2-1 when scoring the games first goal. ... Columbus LW Nick Foligno was given an unsportsmanlike conduct minor and 10-minute misconduct late in the second after he grabbed Boston D Dennis Seidenberg by the jersey from behind and spun him around during a scrum at centre ice. ... The Bruins are off until Thursday when they play rival Montreal. Columbus hosts Tampa Bay on Tuesday, the first of two straight at home. They also play Minnesota. ... The Blue Jackets fell to 1-11-0 when they trail after two periods. ... Former Bruin Johnny "The Chief" Bucyk watched the game from a luxury box. His No. 9 is retired and hanging in the rafters. ... A big melee broke out in the high-priced seats late in the game.
